Dustin Browder gave an interview to GameSpot this week, and he talked about the popularity system for Heart of the Swarm:
"Right now, there's arcade where we overhaul our custom game interface to make it easier for players to search for custom mods, as well as filter searches so that it'll display the most popular, the most-played ones and new ones off the assembly line. This would lead to a quality-based mod ecosystem, right? The current interface just shows off the most-played ones all the time, so we wanted to shake that up a bit. We'll also have to add in the ability for users to share and sell their custom games to other users." - Dustin Browder
I guess they don't plan on getting hid of the pop sys and doing something more wc3 style like sorting maps by how long the host is waiting in lobby :(
As Dustin said about Toss balance, "We were like, 'We don't think it was that bad.' Sure enough, a week later the community was fine with it." The same thought might apply :(
It's important to note that he is admitting that he thinks there is something wrong with the popularity system AND that they're toying with some ideas to change it. The vague description given in this interview actually sounds like a step towards some of our proposed changes.

What we need is a "currently active" or "needing players" category, which would be the W3 list, inside a tab to the left, with categories and favorites.
Short question: I have never really played WC3 Online, what was the custom map list system there like? And why did it work so good?
There was a list, which looked like this:
- Dota 5on5 -ar no noobs! <<< Hosted 5 seconds ago
- Elemental TD fun!!!
- Footman Frenzy 6.45...
- Dota...
- Dota...
- Castle Fight 1.0
- blablabla... <<< Hosted 2 minutes ago
-.....
So basically, every map hosted got a own Game-name and it would be shown at the top of the list.
If you host a map it would be shown as the first map in the list so people could already join in it.
There was a lot of shifting in the list but you could find every map you wanted to play.
They just need a more robust system for sorting and searching for maps, so that players can decide what they want to play before they even see the list of maps, instead of decide what they want to play based on the list that is shown to them.

EXAMPLE: (A lot of variation)
Oh my fuck. Yeah, i actually DO remember that. That was classy.
Yeah, it would work so much better. I remember when i first got SC2 that i was pissed that i couldnt give my hosted map a name.
That's not a simple fix. It still has the maps in the same order as they are now. It doesn't actually change anything. The same popular maps are still shown in the same order. Showing their lobbies in the manner of that screenshot makes no difference.
you should take the info of "simple fix for same map spammage" from that image. Now add to that the fact that anything that is shown is an active lobby.
(brain explodes)
Anyone remember the cyclic list they had for 2 days? That was brilliant, all they need to do is tweak that. The list is constantly changing. Lots new maps were popping up, and popular maps would often reappear while not burying other maps. That was a great system especially now that people can bookmark.
Whatever system blizzard come up, they should have a list that is constantly changing.
What are you talking about? I'm saying that your screenshot is no different than what we have now, aside from showing the lobbies. Showing the lobbies makes no difference if you still have to walk through the entire list of popular maps to find the map you'd like to play.
I wish people on this forum would actually learn to think like a designer or developer before complaining like idiots. Everyone here is just really inept and their suggestions are terrible. It's obvious why Blizzard listens to none of you. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about or how to design features for a UI or a game.

Bleh.
Why am I not surprised?

At least they are going to change something. With the marketplace, everything is going to get shaken up a bit.
"most popular, the most-played ones"... isn`t that the same thing?
Anyway guess we can pretty much give up hope on ye old w3 lobbies coming back
Short question: I have never really played WC3 Online, what was the custom map list system there like? And why did it work so good?
This system is better.
It just needs more work (which unfortunately they have continued to not do).
What we need is a "currently active" or "needing players" category, which would be the W3 list, inside a tab to the left, with categories and favorites.

Here's an example with not so much variation I screenshotted in 2008:

@Zarakk: Go simple fix for spammed maps:
With the exception of proper mode support, how is that different to the current system?
Oh my fuck. Yeah, i actually DO remember that. That was classy.

That list was also not brilliant.
Funny how he can't just outright admit:
"Sorry guys we fucked up but we're going to try to fix it".
