You probably now that my map Nexus Word Wars was banned:
Quote:
Offense: Inappropriate Map published under this account was found to have contained:* Inappropriate words above some mobs (ex: dyke)
Blizzard sent me today an email allowing me to republish it after I remove all the offensive words from my dictionary. They gave some examples of those words. I'm opening this thread because many people were asking me to publish the list of bad words since the rules also apply to any other map.

Greetings Rodrigo,
Thank you for contacting the Battle.net Account Administration department about the map Nexus Word Wars.
It states, “StarCraft II affords the player the opportunity to create content such as user-made maps. With this freedom comes the potential for abuse. Any content found to be offensive in nature has no place on Battle.net. Such content can be changed or removed, and the publisher warned or suspended.”
These policies are put in place to protect our players, and we take violations of our policies extremely seriously. Nonetheless, Blizzard is a company of gamers. We play the games we make and many of us design custom maps. We understand the hard work that goes into making a map and the impact on the community when a popular map goes offline. We realize that each case is different, which is why we provide a webform for Account Penalty Inquiries at http://us.blizzard.com/support/webform.xml.
Based on the specific nature of the violations in this map, we have determined that in accordance with our policy, the offensive content must be changed or removed. After reviewing your appeal, we have decided to grant a degree of leniency in regards to the banning of Nexus Word Wars. We would like to provide an opportunity to restore a more appropriate version of the map with its original name once the offensive content is removed. Please bear in mind that future map violations for this map or any other may not be afforded this same opportunity. Additionally, if any future violations are reported and validated, your account may be penalized. For information on account penalties in StarCraft II, please see this page: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&tag=SC2penalties&rhtml=true.
To proceed with the reinstatement of this map, you will need to create a new version of the map that does not include any offensive language. We realize that the dictionary used in this game is imported from another source and that English is not your first language, however when publishing a map you are responsible for any and all content in that map. Before the map can be republished, you will need to review the dictionary thoroughly.
We will not be providing a comprehensive list of words that need to be removed, however here are a few examples of words in the map that could result in map closure and action against your account:
Racial/Ethnic
spick
beaner
Obscene/Vulgar
fuck
shitwork
cocksucker
bullshit
Inappropriate
anal
porn
arse
jesus
enema
vulva
whoremonger
ejaculation
Sexual Orientation
queer
When you have edited the map to your satisfaction and are confident that there are no policy violations in the new version, you will be able to upload the new version of the map with the same name, Nexus Word Wars. When you do, players who have downloaded the original will be able to play on the new map, which should help you regain your previous popularity rating over time.
Thanks for understanding our position on this matter. It’s important to us to maintain a safe, friendly environment for all our players in StarCraft II by enforcing our policies. It’s also important to us that our players be able to enjoy the custom map feature and have their hard work and creativity recognized by the community. We look forward to seeing a version of Nexus Word Wars that advances both of these goals.
Maybe you could use another dictionnary instead of removing all the "bad words"...
Maybe it doesnt exist, but try using a "specialized" dictionnary like Annimals/plants/microbes/insects/planets/chimical names ...
This way there will be no chance for any inapropriate words.
lol! Please tell me those words were not actually in your dictionary?? Cmon... if that's the case, you can't possibly be angry at them.
I think XanoX02 had an excellent idea... find a dictionary/compilation of animals or plants or something... names of stars, names from StarCraft lore, planets, anything like that. If you use words specifically from StarCraft and StarCraft 2 they shouldn't have much recourse.
I would suggest you stick to compiling your own dictionary. Considering they didnt filter the whole list for you.
You should manually add every word and know what they mean before doing so.
Your dictionary with over 30k words is still going to have offensive content. event if you remove these 12 words.
You could possibly just generate random letter combinations therefore elimiating any chance of "words" offending people.
Granted some idiots will be offended by letters as well.
I think this would be a good idea, as it makes it harder. With words, you know what's coming. With letters, you have no idea what the next one will be. Of course the map wouldn't live to its name anymore.

I like the idea of specialized dictionary, you should try it. Would make things more interesting and you could learn of new words you never knew of before. Starcraft related would be the best.
Looks like I did judge too soon in the other topic - though to be fair, I went with the info I had, which was the one word 'dyke'. If you actually had stuff like whoremonger and cocksucker in the dictionary, then yeah, I can't actually blame Blizzard for banning it - those aren't your average dictionary-words.
yeah to be safe i'd suggest compiling your own list, but you don't have to do it word by word. just look up groups of words like some grade6-8 spelling list. or look up some of the most commonly used words in the GRE, SAT, etc.
Yea Rodrigo you're much better off just using a list of words of specific topics, that way you have a theme to rotate between kinda like how you were swapping out words before. If you have any questions about the meaning of a word.... well one you can just Google it and see it's definition on Dictionary.com or see what it means on Urban Dictionary (which is a site that primarily lists slang and alternate meanings of words and phrases). Don't rely on what someone else gives you, you might not get another chance like this. Thanks for letting us know what's up though.

One thing you can try - see if you can find a list of "vulgar words" on the internet that contains all of their examples. Then filter through that.
They are probably not giving you a full word list because either they don't actually have one (they ban whatever maps people complain about), or they do have a list, but a dynamic one. I would pose the following question in response:
"Given a project of this scale, what resources would you recommend for determining appropriateness? Why wouldn't you be able to provide a list of banned words? There was a similar case with Apple and the App Store banning an app unintentionally containing profanity about a year ago - and it was successfully resolved by Apple providing a concrete list of words that the app developer would be able to remove and resubmit. I don't see why that wouldn't work out for both parties in this case as well."
The case study is important because it sets a behavioral precedent from a successful company that does what Blizzard is trying to do. Hey if it works, great. If it doesn't, you gave it your best shot. I honestly don't think 33k manual word review is worth anyone's time or effort, at some point you have to value your time and peace of mind. Good luck
I bet they wont be blocked or deemed "Inappropriate"
None of these words are used in profane manners. "Oh.. jesus christ" is however a profane saying so yea.. Jesus is a swear. No one says "Oh.. buddha" unless they see a fat guy statue in china town smiling. (even though the real buddha isn't fat)

It's good to remember that I had 32,000 words to review. I didn't know about those words in my game, and I bet 99% of the players didn't know since it's very hard for them to show up.
Also, the game will be published with a new list. Check the list on the "NWW - Dictionary" thread.
Glad to hear Blizzard will allow it to come back. Just hate how they are saying anything offensive. Like I said before the only way a word is offensive is how it is used. These words are just words, I can understand if they have only a meaning that is meant to harm someone but most offensive words do not have a word to harm someone as their original definition. Can't wait for it to come back. :)
