Weekly Terraining Exercise #19
Greetings old chap! Due to all of the 'inferior' exercises we've had so far, I decided to this week come up with a real, prententious and artsy exercise. I mean, surely, no good terrainer uses doodads, right? This week's theme shall be "Let's be pretentious and artsy" - the idea coming from the brilliant mind of Yukaboy, I'd like for you all to create the best looking terrain you can come up with by using only the terrain palette; which means no doodads. Cliff gap fillers shall be the obvious exception.
Well, off you go my likeminded artists! Tut-tut and cheerio!
here we go so, it a mountainous valley ( was gunna make it look like a drop and a valley but this turned out good ).
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WHERE THE NOISE TOOL WAS USED :D, i used it to make the rough edges ( more realistic ) and tough point that are hard to make on a mountain.
I used the belshir tileset mainly only 4 tiles Grass, Dark Grass, Dirt Dark and Sand ( yesh sand :D try to pick it up).
Data Module > Data Type: Terrain Texture Sets > [Your Map's Texture Set] > Fog Enabled - Disable
Data Module > Data Type: Terrain Texture Sets > [Your Map's Texture Set] > Fog Density - 0.0000
Honestly, you can skip the "Fog Enabled" step, because I've never seen it work the way i thought it would (at least not in real-time). It just makes me feel better to set it too. Setting density to 0 will immediately remove the fog in the editor. Or adjust the Fog Height and Falloff, if you still wanna keep the fog.
Here is a salt water river with some beach and mountains tried to give it a feel like a photographer took these photos, and it was killing me not to put in a palm tree or two lol
Bronx, you keep putting out the most amazing shit. If you smooth out those little 'water holes' just a tiny bit more, it could be better, but aside from that, pretty damn awesome job.
In reality I like pretty much everything posted so far though - Scrin, you need to use the smooth tool just a little bit to prevent 'spikes' of ground - they're ugly in 99% of the situations. Aside from that, awesome job as well, and welcome to mapster!
I decided to make another terrain and made something of a misty dark ghost crater. The center of the crater lies a misterious "Asteroid", but really, it's the first sign that Aliens exist...THE ZERG...Hope you like it! :)

Nice. It has a sort of spooky feel to it. I hope to see a lot of simple but artistically detailed maps this week.

tyvm i tried to use the noise feature ( because everyone says not to use it ) and it worked succsessfully
I cant work on any of these until this weekend, but expect A LOT of screenshots from me on saturday! Cya then! :)

I'm guessing lighting, skybox, and fog modification is allowed?
Uhm.. wanted a better groundview, but the fog simply removes 90% of the terrain then, and donno how to turn it off :( qq

Yup.
I call it, "Gulp". (inspired by the release of Cataclysm)
And I might try for another one this week as well, not sure yet. If I can find some extra time!
P.S. Nice entry on the first one, love the foilage and the stars!

That looks very serene and peaceful, which then leads me to think of your avatar picture.
This is mah first post here.
Hope you like this one. It's a first person view of Diablo, walking up to his throne. If I was allowed doodads, it would've looked much nicer. :)

Looks awesome and welcome to mapster!
Heres another one for this, no doodads. Just a frozen/cracking lake near some mountains in winter.

I've made some sort of mining quary.

1st, I wish you would smooth out the "Cliffs"
2nd, is the road allowed in this excersise?
3rd, good job and keep up on everything else. :D
