And hello again everyone! I've been quite slacky on joining and commenting the WTEs lately, but this is mostly because I'm working on my submission for the custom map constest. I should really have more time after the 11th.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #5
I wanted to go with something more enclosed and set-in-stone (pardon the pun), so I've decided that this weeks theme is going to be "Under the Mountains!". What I want to see this week is caves, holes... anything you'd expect to find underneath a mountain, rather than in them. I'll give you a little tip to start with that not all of you might know yet; you can place enlarged Rock Archs close to eachother to make for a cave ceiling/wall. It might be instrumental to what you're going to make. Or not, of course, if you've got something better.
Also, a weekly reminder; PM me those suggestions! I can't come up with a good theme every week, so if there's anything you'd like to see, send it over and I'll consider putting it up.
Well, this inspired me to do more with my mines of Moria map.
The following tells the story of the fellowships journey through Moria.
Titles in order: Speak Friend and Enter -> Gandolf: Light in the Darkness -> Top of the 1000 Stairs -> Gimli Rushes to the Tomb -> The Bitter Reunion -> Drums, Drums in the Deep > They Know Not Where They Flee -> The Dwarves, They Delved Too Deep > Behold, Balrog. > You Shall Not Pass!!!
Yeah I should have fixed those before taking the pictures :(...Wouldnt have been hard but ohh well. Its not a map I will use for anything as the extreme heights and depths make it unplayable (due to the camera wigging out).
Didn't have a lot of time this week, so had to do something on a smaller scale, went with something really confined, and made a small mining force that are trapped by a cave in, and desperately try to get out alive. Also, does anyone know if you can hide the ugly green pointers from various terrain objects? Due to the enclosed area, I wasn't able to get any in game screen shots :(
I'm just going to take some time to comment and say literally all of these are pretty damn awesome. Really, there were some good ones in the previous WTE's, but I like nearly every single one of these. They are all original, have awesome lighting, placement, you name it. These are some of the best caves I've seen since Heroes of Might and Magic 5's subterraneanarea.

Avoid too steep cliffs, the stretched textures look horrible.

I really like this man. We might need some mappers later on for our projects that uses these rich doodads maps
@Underp4ntz: Go
Sure thing, mapping is pretty much all I do, don't really have any great ideas for games, so just mapping all the time ^^

Wish I could do lighting like you...I struggle so much with the stupid lighting :( .
I want something easier next week. I don't even know how to terrain caves. :(
Here is my attempt. Not quite as good as the others, but I'm pretty bad at this sort of thing.
I tried to make it look like a cave as much as i could, and i think it went rather well =)
Suggestion on improvents and tips is appreciated!

Here's my submission, first submission ever to WTE :D
Awesome job there as well, Zero. It reminds me of Deepholme from WoW O_o
Anyway, time to upload WTE #6 - I've got something special/interesting for you lot this week...
