I've toyed with the idea of creating a RPG but I feel like the replayability of them is minimal, or that everyone's doing it now; the market is a bit flooded, so to speak. What kind of maps are people looking for? What would make you play a map more than once?
tbh I think singleplayer maps are some of the most funny things (except ladder games) I might not replay them as much as some custom games but they are the ones that brings me the most joy. I don't have to bear with some laggy noobass slowing down my game or some other crackpot harrasing my probes.
Nah some singleplayer missions where you can take your time, build what you want to build and and feel the map was made just for you! throwing in alot of trigger works and cutscenes makes my joices flowing. I tried you sc1 legacy map and quite enjoyed it!
Though instead of only making singleplayer missions from the starcraft theme, also try take in some inspiration from other games such as empire eartch or ages of empires (brilliant!) where you have to capture stuff, gather stuff and make new alliances to make it out alive...
in any case singleplayer maps rocks imo, though they rarely make the popularity list atleast the persons who decide to play them, like them because they want to play them. tbh a singleplayer map that last two hours would go into my wet dreams anytime!
but then again I am kinda special, I guess to make the map that most people want, you need to remake nexus wars with only nude females instead of units.
I like Strategy maps, capture bases, upgrade them, etc.
If you've ever played Wc3, the games WW1 - Ish and Azeroth Wars: Legacy Reborn are some of the best examples there are.
I find that there the most replay able, in addition to that, there Roleplayable =)
There's been plenty of attempts at RPG's but nothing too amazing out so far...those kinds of maps do take time, after all.
It is true that single-player experiences have less replay value, but many of my favorite games in general have been single-player because the authors usually spend so much time creating that one experience, that the entertainment value of that one play-through is higher than most multi-player games.
The only good way to make a single-player map have re-playability is to give the player different paths to choose from, that way it isn't just everything they've seen before when they play again. All of these things take a long time to make, though...if it's to be any good.
