I worked my way though the tutorial for creating a new unit, but even though I copied from the terran marine my new unit is missing some sounds. He's also missing some models. Why didn't it just copy everything? Will he ever sing again!
I changed it so the new unit uses the same actor sounds. The only thing I can't figure out now is why there's no flame spouting from the end of the gun like there is for a normal marine. This editor really is craptastic. The Warcraft 3 editor was much easier to use.

The editor may be harder to understand at first, but it is definitely not bad. My suggestion is that you don't copy the marine, but instead just edit the marine unit itself. This will make things a lot easier to manage as everything you want will already be there.
this is correct but if he wants more than one marine-type unit in a custom game this can be an issue (aside altering jim raynor and such) so it is probably best that he learn how to get it to work now. Like in art, some artists draw character hands in pants pockets to avoid learning how to draw hands. Gotta learn eventually :)
I'd rather not edit the marine. Otherwise anyone who plays the map as Terran will end up with my marine instead fo the standard one. That wasn't the intention. Does anyone know what setting enables the flame coming out of the guns?
Instead of "Copying" the marine, "duplicate" the marine. You should then receive an option dialog that lets your choose which elements of the unit you'd like to copy.
Indeed I did. It duplicates all the fields, and then puts copies of the entries into then. Eg attack copy instead of attack. I then had to manually go through and change them so it worked. Hence my reference to craptastic.

Particularly because this is totally your fault. I mean, just now I copied the Marine (didn't duplicate, just made a new unit with the same weapon and actors), and I got the proper animation fine. You've clearly done something wrong, but I'm not sure what. It's got the same weapon, right? You haven't been missing around with Events +, right? Those seem like the most likely culprits.

The newly created weapon should share all the properties of the original except damage and rate of fire. Clearly it doesn't.
Hmm. What do you mean by 'reference copies'? If you mean checking the boxes, stop doing that.
Check the weapon in question and see what the attack actor is (if this is a copy of the Gauss Rifle, it should say Marine Attack). If not, what is it using, if anything? Incidentally, if it's not a copy of the Gauss Rifle, you're probably screwed.

COPY the Unit and Actor, and rename them to whatever the hell you want.
Go to actor > art. Change model and portrait to marine.
Go to actor > sound. Change Pissed/Ready/What/Yes/Attack/Move sounds to the same ones used by normal marine, you may ignore the other fields.
Go to actor > events. Find every instance of ALL default Marine references and change them to the unit that you copied.
Finally got it all working. When I duplicate the marine I have to link everything except the marine and marine_death actors which I had to copy. Then I have to go through and edit the marine actor to use the marine art and sounds. When I duplicate the guass rifle effect I have to copy everything. Some of the models don't come up, but after I go through and edit everything that references copies some more appear. The only thing missing is the weapon upgrades, but I don't need these anyway. Seems an unecessarily long winded way to copy a unit though.

I've got my map all ready, I've got my custom units. I've even created some triggers to add them at the appropriate time.
But how do I get the newly created unit to patrol?
Does the command card have the patrol on it? It's gotta be an Ability Command type with the ability Move and with the command Patrol.
EDIT: If you meant how do you do it in triggers, then I'm guessing you do an Issue Order action and change the thingy "Issue Order With No Target" to Issue an Order Targetting A Point and select patrol or move or whatever it is.
I did look in Issue Order, but I didn't realise you had to change the target. No wonder I couldn't find it! Unfortunately it seems you can only specify a single point for patrolling, where I wanted my guys to patrol in a circuit.
I've ended up creating a while (unit alive) action with a series of attack point actions and a 5 minute (real time) wait. I found without the wait I got errors. It's probably not the best way of acheiving my ends, but it does seem to work.

Try copying the marine's Actors Sound and Group Sound over your units ones

Right click the marine. Select duplicate. Tick ONLY the marine actor that has a marine portrait.
