Some of you may know me - Median XL, Diablo 2 mod, #6 in ModDB Mod of the Year. Anyway, I'm planning for a SC2 project that should dethrone DOTA (or will die trying). One of the key features is a (semi-)realistic control model based on a first person shooter style, but in third person - walking units have mouse aim and WASD to move/strafe; vehicles are driven with WASD and the mouse controls a turret.
Since I've JUST installed the game and it'll be a while before I figure out the basic game let alone editing...
- How hard is it to emulate the 'Blizzcon ghost map' control style with mouselook (I know it wasn't at Blizzcon, but 'today our developers put in support') and mouse aiming? I'm asking because it was also possible in War3 but it was so clunky and desync-prone that it was pointless for a multiplayer map. (Don't shatter my dream, please, Blizzard!)
- Is it still possible to combine units? They showed an ultra with spine crawlers on its back, but how about a tank with a missile turret on its back that can be aimed with the mouse?
- Can you have a fully custom UI but keep the automap?
I'm not asking for detailed instructions (though a few pointers would be nice :) ), just a general idea of whether it's even feasible to do things this way.
Anyway, at this point, since tehre is vritually no scripting api, mouse control is limited to the standard RTS behavior (left click selection, right click smart action). We will definitely have to wait for the editor to be relased to see the feasibility of such a thing. Fellow modder xcorbo is working on a map that has a third person view, done by merely working on the camera data files.
Combine units is kind of an innacurate expresion, as you attach components to actors. But yeah, you can even rigth now. I do not know very well yet, and I intend to recreate eventually the uberlisk before the editor is out, but as of yet, someone else will have to provide info.
The UI i can tell you is something that really hesn't been explored so far. From what I have grasped on the SC2Layout files, it is indeed possible, but seems quite complicated, at least by means of self discovery with 0 documentation whatsoever.
Irt is likely all your ideas will definitely be possible (and possibly emulated to detah thans to CoH: Tales of Valor tank mission), but at this point a few can't be done yet and the others still reuire personal R&D
I quit/was banned from the Keep because Median was taking it over. :p I have my own forum now.
Hmm... no scripting api, shame. So basically there's no such thing as triggers and JASC yet. :(
But if a third person camera is possible, this is already a huge step ahead.
So attaching is just like War3 where you would attach an orb or weapon. Lame. :( I thought the spine crawlers would actually shoot as independent units and weren't just a graphics effect.

I misexplained myself, i was just ntipicking on the terminology. They do act on their own, I just meant that "units" are not the only attachable.
Whats possible now is not defining what will be possible with Galaxy
All the answers to your questions will probably be yes,
Hell even now it might be yes,
Attaching units: Try looking in the turret information, that would be my first look guess.
WASD Movement: Erm Well, maybe this will have to wait lol
UI Customization: Not much has been touched on on this field but it will be soon as Galaxy has no support for UI, but it it still open to be changed (this actually confuses me, im not sure what UI Blizz says cant be fixed with Galaxy, because alot of the in game UIs were edited in most of the blizzcon examples... with them saying Galaxy does it and its easy)
Basically you sound like me, Dont worry about getting into any hardcore edits yet, you can just poke around with stuff to determine what each thing is behind the scenes and you know what to look for in galaxy =P

The UI itself, exactly what was touched at the videos at BlizzCon, cannot be done via GalaxyEdit. The HUD you saw in the Ghost Map and The Lost Viking, is what i'm referring to. Those will have to be done manually, or rather soon, done via MilkyWayEdit whenever we get that it.
So to answer that question, yes, UI Customization is completely possible.
Wait... are you saying Blizzard's editor won't have support for those, or just the current third party editor? :)
Hi. :D
Blizzard's GalaxyEdit won't support UI Customization. Supposedly, the Editor can do anything and everything, except for the UI Customization. With that in mind, we've been planning on getting that in our Third Party Editor, MilkyWayEdit, ;).
Wow brother laz, i love median xl! XD! anyways to answer your question to an extent.. They said that the map they made took minimal experience with the editor and very easy to make. They also said the people who made the maps weren't pro's on it. So basically saying it will be fairly easy if you know what your doing.
EDIT: As sixen said. too UI will be not supported, but no one said it can't be done. ^^

Erm, actually what they said was that the SCGhost and Lost Viking maps were made by the devs [of GalaxyEdit], so they know the system inside and out. However, UI can and will be done. Corbo, Iggy, and myself did some messing around with it last night.

Could it be that they meant it cannot be done with the trigger menu and you have to dive into the code? Like in War3 where half of the things you wanted to do were only possible in JASS?
Also, Sixen, you need to tell me how you did it. :D
Great. :) It's not entirely what I was hoping for ('can the galaxy editor...?' 'yes.'), but in a way it is enough to solve the UI problem once we can get rid of that black bar at the bottom.
Well, UI Customization is the only thing that hasn't been touched until just now. Corbo was up late that night and did some work on it, I was poking around. The only problem i'm running into is that we can't insert it into the .s2ma itself.

oh well, i thought he was referring to the video of the "First sc2 rpg" that blizzard threw together to show off the skills of the map editor. They said they had very little knowledge and weren't pros on mapping. But yea i assume you're right. Was just a misunderstanding :).

However, Dustin Browder did mention that it was done fairly quickly on their spare time. Although they're pros with the editor, it is completely possible for anyone to make with the editor alone, and of course there are people out there who can do amazing things as well who simply haven't had the chance to use it yet.

There is already a scripting API available. You can read the documentation here : http://www.sc2mapster.com/api-docs/functions/
However, they added only the strict minimum for the AI to work. Therefore you are really limited.
I misexplained myself, i was just ntipicking on the terminology. They do act on their own, I just meant that "units" are not the only attachable.

Haven't done anything further on the UI as far as i'm aware, though there's been a big breakthrough with terraining today...
But 2 out of 3 Blizzcon maps have a custom UI and the Ghost map has NPC dialogue! :( Even War3 had some UI customisation options.
