'Affect that heals unit': Can you specify the field that needs to be filled for the actual healing? It's not clear what I would do to actually get the effect to do healing unless you mean create a separate damage effect that has -10 as the value under the amount field and link that into the search area eff...... Nvm I just answered my own question...
I'd still like to know what ability type i should use though.
What's the difference between using a Modify Unit effect and a Create Healer effect if any? Would these options be more ideal than just a damage effect with a negative value?
i greatly advise to use a Set Effect with 2 modify unit effects, one for the target and one for the caster. the create healer effect is a bit.. unhandy.
I'm sorry to be such a noob but I have no idea what fields to input values for in order to set up the Modify Unit effects to heal correctly. Can anyone help me out?
ok let's assume you have a healing fountain which consumes energy to heal. create a new buff, call it healBuff. set the phase to 2 seconds. now create a new Set Effect. call it HealSet. create 2 new modifiy unit effects. set one to caster unit and set the energy field to -1. the other one is set to target by default. just change the hitpoints field to 1. call it targetHeal. now create a new search effect. add range to it, let's say 5 radius and add the targetHeal effect there. add a unit filter to the search effect, leave everything checked. now add the HealSet effect to the periodic event field of the healBuff. now add the modifyCaster effect to the healSet. also add the searchEffect to the healSet.
buff -> set -> A modify caster; B search -> modify target.
now create a new validator that checks for close units. add this one to the set effect otherwise the fountain will loose energy every 2 seconds. add the buff to the fountain.
if it is not a fountain, but an ability, remove the buff and use the rest.
There is a unit in-game called the Xel'Naga Healing Shrine. It uses an AOE healing ability called "heal", which does exactly what the name suggests. Just duplicate it and tweak it a bit to get a result you want. It's a bit easier than having to come up with an ability from scratch if you are unfamiliar with how to do it.
I see a field called Stats: Duration. Would that be it?
Also, where is the "advanced" button. I did not see any button called advanced or anything with the words advanced in it in any of the menus or as part of the UI except for "Edit Advanced Data" menu under the main Data drop down menu. Behaviors doesn't seem to be a part of that though.
Can someone help me break these instructions down into steps? I'm not able to understand what these mean due to lack of experience and familiarity with the editor.

Is the 'energy field' referred to above that needs to be set to -1 found under the "Cost" field of the created modify unit effect?
I don't think it's part of HotS. Just try searching for any unit with the word "healing" or "heal" in the name and it should show up. Looking at how Blizzard did it and then duplicating the ability (or editing if you feel lazy) should do the trick.
^ any ideas?

something like this
Heres a tut on making a healing fountain..... It may give you some ideas about how you want to go about it

You can also use Modify Unit and Create Healer effects to heal. An alternative is to apply a buff that increases life regen for a duration.

That sounds like it would only affect 2 units. Will it heal all ally units within the set range?
@EntityEnigma: Go
not if you put an search effect infront of it.

Sorry, how do I do this? I don't see any data type that says "buff". Is it an effect? I don't see buff under effect types either.

behavior = buff

Read the tutorial on making a healing well.
The Modify Unit effect can alter vitals like the zerg queen's Transfusion ability.
Create healers work like the Medivac

Is that part of HotS? I don't have HotS assets.

Thx for clarifying.
@FunkyUserName: Go
How do I set the phase? I don't see a phase value under my newly created buff.
@EntityEnigma: Go
then you need to enable the "advanced" button of the editor because phase duration is there.

What is involved in adding a unit filter to a search effect? Is this done in the "Search Filters" field of the search area effect?
How do I set up a validator that checks for units and what is meant by the short hand used?

Just make an aura like the mothership cloak and get it to do your healing. If in doubt read the tutorial on making a healing well.
