Hey guys, so, I plan to start doing stuff with a Xeyed campaign pretty soon here, and I will want the characters fully voice acted, I want to do some myself, but am held back because my microphones are super lame, so I am kinda wondering if I should do any voices at all.
Preferably men, but I might have some lady voice acting needed as well in the future.
Some voices are going to be zerg, but some terran of course. If anyone is interested in participating, throw in a reply or send me a PM, thank you.
If anyone want's to send any sample files, just make up some lines, because I really don't have all of that stuff figured out just yet.
I can do the zergling and Arnold swarts also a black African one and blues clues I could prob work to get other voices only thing is I haven't ever recorded with it so I ouldent know what program to use.
Yeah, I got a new mic actually, it's alot better, but it isn't quite the caliber of the mic you just linked I think (I now have a PC-058 Omnidirectional), so if I stick a blanket over my head as I record, maybe it will work.
Mostly what I want help with is the algorithms I will want to follow, so any info on that would be appreciated.

I will admit, getting the words clear I am not very good at, and I am not also able to quite get a really good badass zergy voice, it's sorta just, like what wargirl said, sorta robotic. I am just not quite sure on how to get a authentic feel.
I probably get the tin like edge to the voice through to much noise removal, since you need to remove static to get a more understandable sample.
Hey it just so happens I have that mic but I still would like to make some sounds for you I've got some cool Zerg voices and the Protoss Templar from sc1
Its basically three layers of voice. I copied the recording three times and layered them together but all of them pitched down to -3 semitones. On the first layer, I flanged it harshly. I lowered the second layer's pitch by 10% and added it its own light flange. The third layer is a copy of the unaltered second layer but its pitched was raised by 20%.
I then mixed them altogether, did some EQing, boosting low and highs, compressed, normalized, and gave it a little bit of reverb and echo. After that, I placed the signature reverse reverb that we all know from zerg/protoss voices then reversed it back to normal.
Zerg voices are known to be cunningly aggressive. So its a good idea to sound like you're plotting someone's murder in a methodical but angry way. :P
Used a cheapo Genius MIC-01c Lapel mic. I used adobe audition for the software. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the tips. I have to capability to do about everything you suggested with audacity, however, I don't have a proper flange plugin and have had trouble finding one. If anyone knows where to get a good flange plugin for audacity that would really help.

Two layers. One is unedited and the other own has its pitch lowered by 20%. Mixed them both together, applied a chorus filter, compressed, EQ'd, normalized, and added the necessary reverb embellishments. Protoss voices are a whole lot simpler since they require less aggresive editing. Except if you're doing an archon, ofcourse. :P
I would record more, but there are enough little ones in the house that there is non-stop noise. Seldom I am able to catch a moment of silence, but I am usually busy anyways. I will try to get some more tests out soon tho.

Kinda forgot about this thread, kinda tend to do that latey. Anyways, I have a protoss voice file I would like to share.
I don't think I will really e able to do voices for terrans, because the effects on zerg and protoss voices hide my youth, but I can't exactly make my voice sound like a thirty year old (Since I am just 14) because of fewer effects
I think the mic bugged for a moment somewhere in there but otherwise it's fine.
Try not just editing the line itself. There's only so much you can do with that, no matter how malleable your voice is as a waveform. Instead, copy your line a couple times and alter each one heavily with different effects. One might be a flange, one might be a chorus, and one might just be heavy bass, creating a sort of growl against the voice. Then paste them all on top of each other.
The result is you'll be able to hear the words despite heavy editing, and you'll have a much wider range of editing options available. Editing of an edit of an edit often leads to synthesis problems. But one edit to the waveform in three separate arenas will yield a much crisper result.
EDIT: Apparently, your mic is doable to do some decent quality voice acting. I went and edited your voice. Did lots of clean up and simply applied the filter I commonly use for the protoss.
Other than that, I had to increase the bass to give it that oomph. Lowered the treble to make it sound less harsh in sibilant letters.
Oh my, I was just going though my old threads, and totally did not realize you had followed up on this, StringStorm. (Albeit quite some time later)
I am very impressed with the result of what you did with my line. And that was almost a few years ago. Maybe I'll try this voice-over thing again, now that I'm older, perhaps I'll have a better voice for what I was trying to do.

Do not do any voices unless you can buy a decent mic. Your noise ceiling should be pretty much nonexistent. I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/Samson-Mic-Portable-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B001R76D42

I like this one better but I have to say is more of a robotic voice I hear not zerg.

I had to play it several times before I was able to make out the "remain weak" part. Otherwise it seemed decent.

holy cow! If u ever need money apply to blizzard for this awesome protoss voice!
Here's a little something I whipped up using the line from your recording.

So what does this tell us? If I can pull it off with your voice and an audio editing software from the late 90s, you can to.
