I have tried for several weeks to get a model exported to sc2, I am not really that interested in art tools as the model is just about finished( just need to finish up a few basic animations )with no luck whatsoever. I have followed all the steps given in the m3 exporter. Whenever I run the script it says I have no sc2 materials, but I had 2 materials, it showed up perfectly fine in 3ds max, I have no clue what is wrong and would like some help. Can anyone shed some light on me for sc2 materials and how to set them up in 3ds max(2012 because no student version of 2010)? I would hate to have wasted all this time making a model. I realize that I may be missing something somewhat obvious to someone experienced and I apologize if that is the case.
Thanks for the reply but my materials are already sc2 materials, I am just using the composite map( for color ), I am not using any textures whatsoever for this model
This is why we recommend star tools in the first place. I don't care if you don't use any of its features. It's by far the best working exporter for 3ds max. I haven't used the community tools for exporting in ages so I doubt I'd be of any other help.
mainly because Sc2Composite is used for cinematic models. If you use it on normal game models, it means the model must be rendered in more than one pass, so it's a costy material. Not only that but models using Sc2Composite bug out if you try to apply a displacement effect (cloaking for example)
I doubt you'll find an student edition of max 2011 now-a-days.
Thanks for the reply again, yea I figured because I searched the web for some time for one. I am not very 'good' so to speak with 3ds max, how can I apply solid color,(without composite) what part of the material do I need to use?( I am not using alpha blending( transparency ), blur effects or anything like that, just solid color, ex RGB ).
Please help, I have tried everything, no matter what kind of sc2 material I use it says I have none and wont export any data. If I am being of too much trouble, the model is finished, if someone would export it for me that would be great.( I don't have 3ds max 2011 no student version available on net, but I can export as a 2011)
Check out my set of tutorials, it explains everything, starting from the installation of the SC2Art Tools, using materials etc.. to a finished in game model.
Thanks for the replies, is the poly count a real problem? Is it just for the community exporter or will it work with art tools? If no, is there an easy way to reduce poly count? Also, I don't understand how the animation can be 3 frames, it wouldn't look an an animation at all( unless art tools fills it in for you ). I also, do not see a SC2standard material, just SC2 material or standard.
Okay I am ready to get back into working on my map a little bit. I am very inexperienced with models and do not have a student version of max 2011. I am a 3 year c++ programmer, I feel this editor is built too simple for me and I tend to overlook everything... The only models I have worked with are .obj models. Can someone help me get this model working how I need it to? The current model is great although, it needs to have a collision sphere. Also, the walk and stand animations need to be blank. The walk start should be the penguin getting on its stomach and walk end should be the penguin getting back up. Some suggestions for a simple attack animation would be nice as well. Thanks everyone, I realize these things may be time consuming, I have tried to get it working with 3ds max 12 with no luck.

Type m, select each of your material and click on Standard, change that for Sc2Material.

oh, I think the m3 exporter does not support Sc2Composite as Art Tools do. Try figuring out a way to apply your efect without Sc2 composite.
Can anyone supply me with a link or an installer for 3ds max 2011(student version) so I can try to use the art tools exporter?
-Thanks for the reply BlinkHawk that makes sense now( although not sure why they didnt include it )

I believe that you hit the maximum nbr of polys, not every model can be used in a game, like this one...
it has more than 170.000 ( yes thousand) of polys while the guideline describe up to a max of 8000 ( like the Thor model)
so it is WAAAAY to high, and it is just a pinguin...
you have 103 frames for a simple animation, you could reduce it, I saw the animation, it would take 3 frames for what it does.
also, the material you are using does not work, use a SC2Standard material instead, no need to use sub devided materials.

The problem is I cant find a copy of 3ds max 2011 student edition or I would. Is there any way to get this model workable?
I'll check
- uvw map not correct - Do not use a multi / sub material - and 2 missing material in sub material - the animations I do not do it

Well, this took me about an hour, based on your model,
500 triangles 1 diff, 1 spec and 1 norm map all 512x512
