I uploaded the Firebat mercenary into 3ds max with no problems. After that i decided I wanted to change the skin of the model, so I loaded its diffuse map into Photoshop and made some changes. Now I have no idea how to get the skin back onto the model.
If you just want to change the texture you don't even need 3D Studio Max. In any case, all texture business is done through the material editor (Ctrl+M)
Not really. You can open the m3 file with any text editor and change the textures from there. (Of course you'd have to be careful not to change anything else)
Ok well, I loaded the m3 file into word and found and changed the listed textures. After I loaded my model into the editor it showed the little white orb thing.
I'll try what you suggested, caspersc.
Ok, just to clarify if I wanted to change the texture for my model I would have to use something with the same name length?
The renaming didn’t work even though I kept the name length the same it still changed the file size. I think it may have something to do with word but that is just a guess.
As I am new to the whole modeling business how would I go about doing what you suggested GnaReffotsirk?
I also tried importing my DDS files into 3DS but it wouldn’t accept them even after I downloaded the plugin.
Funny, I was just looking at your StarCraft 1 models a second ago. You are freaking awesome I don’t think I’ll ever be as good as you.
Anyways it’s funny that I was looking at your stuff while you were looking at mine.

you could've just took the diffuse map from the Assets/Textures folder and edited and reimport it back into the same folder with same name.
I knew I could do it without 3ds max if i just wanted to overwrite the preexisting data but don’t i need it if i want to make a separate texture?
Example: If I wanted to have the Devil Dog and my new Firebat side by side in a game.

Well you can't change the file-size, so you would have to rename it to something with the same string length.

Yup, exactly. Sorry for forgetting to mention it.
I would:
0. Extract every texture associated with the m3 to my textures folder.
1. Do my edit and save the .dds to my textures folder
2. Import the m3
3. Reassign all references for every material in the material editor.
4. Export the new M3.
Issues will be:
Some unsupported stuff like animated/morphed textures will not be visible.
Attachments will not work.
Mirrored normals will be flipped or would not display properly.
Animations might go wrong.

You would need a nifty video and tutorial for NiN's exporter. I would gladly provide one. Give me a sec.

Ok, everything was working great untill I tried to export.
My 3ds Max looks a little different than yours so I couldn't follow the steps exactly.
Do you see that box which says "Standard"? Eye-dropper, drop-down listbox, then the button that says, "Standard".
Click that and change it from Standard to Starcraft 2 Bitmap. At the material Editor. Your first picture.

It’s not there, do I have to make it?
The button is there but I cant find Starcraft 2 Bitmap anywhere.
Lol, I figured out the problem...I never put the sc2_objects.ms into the 3ds plugins folder.
I have hit yet another bump, I’m sure it’s easy to fix but I can’t seem to figure out where I went wrong.
I have made sure than I have attached the diffuse correctly and also made sure everything else was correct.
