Rock the Cabinet 2015
Quote:Today, we’re excited to announce the latest Blizzard Arcade contest, Rock the Cabinet 2015. If you were a part of the contest last year, then you've seen some of the amazing games the modding community has created in the past. This time around, we're recognizing the incredible efforts of even more creators and awarding them with over $30,000 in cash and prizes. To celebrate the Warcraft III assets we released earlier this year, the theme for Rock the Cabinet 2015 will be Fantasy. We want your best, brand-new game set in a magical world of your creation. We want to see swords and bows, dragons and goblins, orcs and elves, anything that will transport players into a fantasy setting. Though we’d love to see the Warcraft III models in action, they’re not required and you are absolutely welcome to use any and all tools at your disposal.
Please someone create an Ingame SC2 Manager Game! Kinda like a football manager http://buzznewz.tumblr.com

The first working map I did is "Double Build Micro" which is a double 1vs1 to practice micro/macro at your full capacity to improve. It has a menu with some helping tools like flashing ressources and supplies when near a certain amount, setting the computer difficulty, setting a delay between both base so computer attacks are not sync allowing you to micro a little more, etc. It's very cool and usefull for practice. But trigger wise, its not the most efficient and the UI i made is overcomplicated with check boxes, dropboxes and stuff.
My first worst mistake with the galaxy editor was that i thought it would work like the sc1 editor (which i came from; i never used any other editor). And in sc1, there was a trigger called "Preserve Trigger" which made it loop forever. And I though using "Periodic Trigger" for many of my triggers would work fine... I was wrong. It lagged like hell when you have like 80+ perdiodic triggers. Once i understood (with the help of someone from the IRC) I tried to make it small to few periodic trigger, but even now its not perfect.
After years of working with the galaxy editor now, I'd redo the map from scratch, it would go faster than fixing it, hahaha.

reelie, actually I do have some traditional game development experience. Game development is a hobby of mine and I've built a couple of really simple games using Java, JavaScript, Python, and Unity3D. I haven't made anything using the Galaxy Editor, but it hasn't been difficult learning it so far.
Thanks for your encouragement, guys! :)
My first arcade map took like a week maybe. But it wasn't great, and very inefficient triggers lol.

Mine took up to one entire year, because I threw myself in a fight against a TPS Engine and i tried to create a very complex game. However, like you said, "a simple Blizzard Arcade game" should not take that long ;) It could be very long at the beginning to understand the editor, but once it's done, you'll be fine.
I wish you guys have already some understanding and experience about creating games.
I'm very excited about this contest. A friend and I will be collaborating on a simple Blizzard Arcade game, but since it's our first we will be in an uphill battle to learn the StarCraft 2 Editor and make a fully functional (and enjoyable) game under the time crunch.
How much time did it take to make your first SCII Arcade game?
