posted a message on Stackable Units

Proposing the idea of Fortress Walls. The Supply Depot is a good unit to envision.

Is it at all possible to create a unit that can be built upon like terrain? This would allow players to create walls that can extend 2 or 3 units high.

In any case, I think it would take a mix of data and triggers. If not, I assume that I could just create my own 'stacked' unit that is a single actual unit, and when a play builds a supply depot on top of a supply depot, he'll get that new unit in its place instead.

    Is this even possible?

Let's say the player starts with modified carrier of sorts.

During gameplay he has the opportunity to upgrade his carrier.

The player decides he wants to upgrade his engines. Can triggers be set in place to modify the data in a way that alters attachments, therefore changing the appearance of the ship as a whole during the game? This would be really useful for giving each different upgrade its own appearance and giving the player a good sense of customization as he 'builds' his ship.

Wow, surprised this thread got necroed.

@gregnegg I might be interested in joining a team, if for no other reason to learn and have a resource.

To everyone else, I actually gave up on this project for a really long time... but I've always had the dream of making this map a reality.

I have the map, and I have the idea of what I want to be done... but I simply don't have a goal for players to accomplish, and reason for me not to continue the work on it.

As it stands, it's a ocean based game, but adding land elements would be cool. If anyone is familiar with Uncharted Waters (NES game), that's kind of what I had in mind for this. Merchants, Pirates, Military, and other sea-faring peoples. Sea-monsters, battles, treasures, and missions. A player can buy used ships or build a new one, putting on certain attachments and gaining levels as a captain which in turn help them maneuver ships and fight better (without directly affecting power numbers.)

Some more broad ideas that would take a lot more work and research would include boarding other ships and engaging in some sort of micro with the crew, if not just bum-rush them. I'd like to keep some fantasy elements, like sea-monsters as I had mentioned.

But again, we reach my dilemma. This is all doable and exciting to me, but simply put, there's no goal to it all except 'get better'. I have nothing that would get the players engaged and keep them having fun throughout the process of exploring and building, and nothing for them to ultimately try to accomplish.

Anyways, I still have the map, and with some inspiration I might go back to it to try to accomplish my dream... but for now it'll continue sitting.

posted a message on Detailed Earth Map Requests

I have a received several requests for the detailed earth map I worked on a couple months back. The map hasn't been touched since Nov 24, but here are the map files for those of whom have been requesting it. I recently logged in to a fair amount of requests for it, sorry for the delay in my response.

Here are the links to the different map files I worked on for it. On has terrain height levels, the others do not. Hopefully this helps with your risk, diplomacy, and world domination maps.

Credit for the terrain would be appreciated. Thanks! ^.^

So... have I been doing a lot of unnecessary work? It sounds like there are half a billion maps that have... literally been traced, therefore being far superior to my etch-a-sketch artwork.

Eh... even if I wasted a lot of time, atleast I'm working my way to being a fairly pro terrain artist.

    Alpha 0.4

Mountains have been added from a height map I found online. Hopefully I can find a good set of textures to makes for a sexy planet!

Alpha .03 is still a separate save file in-case anyone would like the land without any sort of deformities.

    Here is the Alpha v.3

I have readjusted sea level to be exactly 0.0, and the base height of the terrain to be 1.0. This no longer causes bleed through from the oceans and leaves for better edging and detail. I have readjusted all of the continents once more to make room for the entire landmass of antarctica. Detail has been lost in the upper continents due to the change, but everything still looks absolutely excellent.

If any Risk or Diplo maps are to be created from this, I recommend reducing unit size to 20% or less. It makes for an ultra-realistic world and a great map to play on. I will continue to improve the terrain with some mountain sculpting and hopefully I can find some geographic maps to know where all the true deserts and jungles are.

Until then, please check over the changes and critique as necessary. I used regions to better measure distances between quadrants. They are still visible in the SS.

posted a message on Vote For Antarctica!

Here I have provided an image from google earth that I've divided into quadrants. The size of Antarctica will largely affect how much detail can go into the main continents, not to mention how much smaller they'll be.

Antarctica takes up 1/2 of the Earth below the equator. I'd like to know from a public standpoint, should Antarctica honestly be incorporated into a heavily detailed Earth map?

I also extended the boundaries of my map, didn't realize I had it rectangle shaped. That will make it a lot easier to scale everything properly.

Everything you need to know about map-projection. I'm going to go with a more realistic landmass, which makes Asia larger than Africa. But if you look at some of the most commonly accepted projections which leave all of your grid squares equally sized, it forces both anything below or above the equator to look compressed due to the curving of the planet. Unfortunately, I think this takes away from gameplay and realism, since our players will never actually be looking at the entire planet at once in a Google-Earth manner. They'll always be fairly zoomed in, with this in mind, if I make all the landmasses proportionate without taking into consideration the curvature of the Earth, I can make for a very real world to play on no matter how zoomed in the player is.

Lol, it was kind humor Mokse. I didn't take it offensively one bit, and I only took that screenshot of the map I've been using to prove you wrong I guess?

At the same time, me putting those two images that close to eachother kinda opened my eyes a lot. You might say "Damn, That's a sweet Earth!" But... not for this one. :P I'mma do some heavy modifications to it now, hopefully it works out for the best. Also... I could use help with my overall goal... I don't think it's possible... but I'll do the best I can.

it's looking a lot better...but i hate to burst your bubble - africa is as large as (if not bigger) than asia. your americas are looking real good though, as well as your australia

Not to burst your bubble, Mokse... ...Africa IS large, but not nearly as large as Asia, your mom, or my little friend.

I screenshotted the Google Maps image I've been using. Africa is a little to the right, but it's not big. Infact, my Asia looks to be MUCH bigger than it should be, and in comparison would actually make Africa even LARGER than you think it is now. I love you Moxse, I'm doin' muh best, and me shrinking africa doesn't seem like a viable fix to make the world more realistic. ;)

I would like to make mention that my own Country seems to be the worst one of them all. XD

Try lowering the height of your water by just .1, that should do the trick.

This is a bug I've seen more often in the editor - just drag a brush with lower terrain over there and then press control-Z. Sometimes the minimap doesn't correctly update.

Lowering the water didn't cure the bleed effect, and I found out my land is so smooth that it forced all my lakes and shorelines to extend horribly even with .05

I closed and opened the map, minimap fixed itself.
