First Red alert 2 was still westwood, EA had already owned westwood at the time, but it was already started and mainly worked on by westwood, it was 3 that was just hands down horrible.
Anyway to the main point disagree with. C&C TW was NOT going back to the roots, in any shape or form. They are simply trying to carry on the story. None of the game play was "back to the roots". No walls, Unites totally differ to what they have always been. They redid the full building system (im sorry but... being able to build all the buildings you want...and "D and O buildings not the same CD?" it was horrible. It was nowhere near the "roots" and they know it.
When they said "going back to the roots" they mean for the first time, sitting down, and Doing C&C original style, seeing how that was done, and going from there, that is something they have never done, or have ever tried to do, they did not want to make it at its roots ever, they said that.
All my point was, is this is not something we have seen them try to do yet with the C&C series.
EA has never once gone to the root of C&C games, and they have even said they have never tried.
The last solid C&C game was C&C Tiberium sun, Next came... C&C TW THis was the first 100% full EA all the way Direct C&C game, no walls, massive change in gameplay, a third race? (I loved the story of the third race.. big time...and I do think it should have been added.. but not in the way they did)...and then the 4th...that not even a C&C game..
Going to the red alerts, red alert and C&C (first) were one in the same, but with a differnt story and units, both rocked... However RE2 took its own direction when TS went in another, thats where the two of those series split up, and why I dont even compare them anymore (dont even get me started on RE3... I bought that the day it came out...still havnt played more than 3 missions).
Point being, they have never once tried to make C&C what C&C was (aka EA) hell when they finaly fully had the 100% license to the C&C titles...what did they do? they came out of generals #1... the most BC C&C game at the time... You no longer has your main construction yard... you have "SCVs" its was a total jip on the serious and never should have ha the C&C logo on it.
I remember when that came out, they had WW staff say just how sad they were with what was happening. A few of the westwood staff that move to EA actully asked to be switched off that project.
Some down right quite when they did the Tiberium twilight.
They know they have not made a single C&C game, they have been maken RTS games with the same story, and sticken the title on it.
They came out in this interview and said, they screwed up, they were already trying to "improve and change the genre" This time, for the first time, they want to make a real C&C game, the kind we knew and loved.

yeah using regions is very risky... you lose a lot of customization, and setting up a large grid/editing your map would take x20 more work, than just doing a normal "2d" grid using arrays.
Never the less, its a good start. I just fear if someone wants to get a true grid system going, using regions may hurt more.
Let us never speak of sc1 on console again! What I meant is that it's pretty rare or undesirable for a complex RTS with lots of depth to be made on console. It just works better with a mouse or touch-screen.
Meh, a lot of times I see great interviews and then the actual game just doesn't come out right (atleast when put up against the Blizz/Valve juggernauts)... I'm looking at the Dungeon Siege series as an example I guess. I was happier playing old 2D Diablo 2. But let's be hopeful on this one :)
Community is a big deal to me. I wouldn't make maps or tutorials for just any game... there has to be an audience and a good following... which may or may not come with Genitals.
of course, which is why I didnt take to heart some of the things they said, it was just that one thing "We want to take it back to C&C roots, because we know thats what people liked, and thats what made the series great" So at least they know all this new crap they added to it ...was horrible....so I have some hopes.
C&C Generals was one of the first full EA C&C games they did after killing westwood, and I HATED Generals, it had no C&C play style other than "its an rts"
When I first heard about #2... I was... a little...well... I didnt care, could care less.
But read an interview from IGN and it seems they want to take it back to the very core root of C&C games. IF this is true, Then I really will look forward to this. (It looks like you can even build walls again, like in the good old C&C and C&C Tiberium sun.

well one thing is about to turn this whole thread over.... I give to you (Get ready for your eyes to bleed a horrible pain) ... the gayest C&C yet
Ok, calling it the gayest C&C is bad..as its a F2P web based mmo game... but still.... >. (yes I signed up for the beta anyway >_> )
but seriously...what is that?

@Spawnova: Go
I think the new release version is just bugged, for exmaple. FLX explort does nothing, and 3ds export is missing.

What model are you trying spawnova? Also the most common mistake when this issue happens, is not haven the model and texture in the "ROOT" folder.

You dont want to use points either. You use math to make grids, like in any 2d game.

Yeah rts are indeed one of the smallest genere of games... C&c will always have that place in my heart as my first ever rts. I miss Westwood.
