The default directory for maps is Documents\Starcraft II\Maps\. However, it's really not possible to play maps without publishing them. There's a way to do it currently, but it's not very plausible. Download the map from a website, then replace a map in your cache with it. A simple way to do this is to use MapCraft and let MC swap the map for you. Now, launch the game and host "Extinction", which is the default map to be swapped... anyone you play with will need to swap the map as well though.
Thanks for clearing that up. Really disappointed in this by Blizzard in a way.
From my understanding when you play maps in-game, it's all saved and loaded via cache. Now if I were to download a map outside of the game, what directory would it go in and if I'm wrong about the cache bit please shed more light on the topic.

Ok well if I download a map from here or elsewhere, where exactly would I put it?

Additionally, why did Blizzard do it like this?
