I'd like to hear what you guys think would be a good amount of doodads for a 256/256 map.
I'm currently making the terrain for someone's RPG, and if I continue with roughly the same density of doodads, the map will end up with over 60,000 doodads.
I also live in Massachusettes and I felt nothing.

I think you could just set the animation time scale to -1 to get that effect?

That just determines whether the map is "Tiny," "Small," "Medium," "Large," "Huge," or, "Epic."
Max I've ever gotten was 3. It's 1 right now for me.

The project I'm working on, StrikeCraft, is being made at no cost, unless you count the fact that one of us already had 3DS Max.
That guy already had it, though.
You publish it with no balancing of any description and it gets popular.

It's going reasonably well, but we've hit a bit of a roadblock. The game doesn't work if anyone has 2d portraits on :(
