After i spend some time trying to find teh way to attach units in data editor, i gave up and just made simple trigger that allow you to attach any thing you like any wher you like. Here is the link for tutorial.
This method actually give some advantage befor simple actor attachment. You can make your attachment destroyable, you can give it any kynd of ability, and you can give it they own attachment :D have fun.
Hey,
So I followed your tutorial and came with an error. Whenever i build more than one siege tank the previous siege tank loses all of its attachments. Do you know of any way to fix this? I'm drawing blanks...
"The uberlisk tutorial ( only read the text ) does not appear to use independent tentacles, their animation is just linked to the attack of the uberlisk.
Another of my researches had the result, that you can only give 1 of each weapon to a unit, another limitation that will make possible workarounds harder."
Not sure what you mean by the tentacles animation being linked to the Uberlisk attack as each tentacle is it's own weapon/actor that will attack anything in it's search/attach range. You do not have to order the Uberlisk to attack for the tentacles to do anything and they all act independent from each other. Now the tutorial specifically makes the Spine Crawlers a full on attachment that can't be attacked but is destroyed when the Uberlisk is killed, however it would only take a couple changes to the actors to make them selectable/targetable attachments that could be individually destroyed.
I am also not sure what you mean by only being able to give one of each weapon to a unit as for the Uberlisk is has 5 copies of the Tentacle Weapon each that act independent of each other. I will say though that I do like the ability in your tutorial to attach things to locations on units other than that units already created attachment points!
i tried this.. but the units i tried to attach seperated from the tank after creating the tank from the factory.. anyone can help me why its not attaching the other unit/structure in the tank..
my testing in making the unit in attachment
(the name of the unit is Mega Tank)
oh can anyone tell me a very very easy tutorial to understand the attachment method.. the one i saw in uberlisk, confused me
is there a way to do this without triggers? I've found that this function will sometimes experience rubber band style lag at times, and it's impossible to correctly lift an attached unit off the ground, for example attaching a spine crawler to an overlord does not work, it slides on the ground under the overlord, it otherwise functions correctly, but that just looks silly. Even changing the XY triggers and making a trig for Z does not correctly position the spine crawler.
on top of that the actual attaching doesn't always stay on the correct spot, I've found that sometimes the attached unit will float off to the side when the parent unit is facing left, but will look normal when the parent unit is looking toward the right. It's something to do with the trig, but I checked several times and the math is the same as the tutorial.
someone should find out what method the blizzard devs used for it.
This way works correctly, you just did something wrong that's why the unit floated off to non existance. Go look at actor attachment, that's how blizzard did it. Although unit attaching to unit is still useful at times.
As the author of VoidCraft (what I'd like to believe was the inspiration for this tutorial), I'd like to say that this is a needlessly complex way of achieving this.
What happened to that link? Seems as if the thread not open anymore. Is there any way to attach two units to each other with both of them having a life bar/being destructible?

Very useful, i can see some uses for destroyable unit attachments that can use ability's.
I Think i will use this with the data editor version to see if i can create a really interesting boss for my next map "Operation: Thunder".
At least into i find some way to do the same thing in the data editor. (with out faking the unit via weapon attachments)

you can attach units this way in warcraft 3.

Instead of sin and cos you can create a point from polar coordonates.
I am also looking for a way to do this with actors, models, etc.. .cause triggers makes the game lag like a lot...

I don't think, this tutorial was inspired by VoidCraft
hahaha, I checked the date and thought it read 30th Apr 2011.
How come this ended up at the top of the post list?
If you post, and then delete the post, its at the top.
