Greetings again folks! There's been somewhat less interest in the WTEs lately, so this will be a simple one before I try something new and turn it into another Joint-terraining exercise.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #14
This week's exercise will revolve around science - I want people to terrain an indoor laboratory, Castanar/New Folsom style. The challenging part about this weekly is that you'll need to add something specific to make it unique - we've all seen plenty of indoor space landscapes by now, and I don't want to see the same thing over and over again in this thread. Hence the requirement to add at least one specific feature to your terrain that makes it unique and stand apart from the other laboratories.
I like that Chromium. That's lots of Deadman's Port whizzles, I take it? It works surprisingly well with all the lab doodads. The only thing I reckon you could really improve upon is the ground texture used. You could probably use a more laboratory-tiles style and sweep it over with dirt to make it look cooler.
Edit: Yukaboy, what seems to be the problem? Are the attachments not working? You should be able to attach screenshots to your post through the usual menu.
Well, I tried to attach my actual mapto my reply, but it doesn't work. It says 500 something error. I can't attach pictures because...lol...I don't even know how to take them.
Edit: LOL. My attachment finally worksd lol.
Edit: My map is kinda junky, but I am too lazy to fix that up. I was going to do that later.
Use the print screen button to take screenshots, Yuka. They're by default placed in the "C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\StarCraft II\Screenshots" folder. I took the liberty of making some screens for you from your map.
I like the theme, but I reckon the execution can be a lot better. It looks mostly chaotic, junky like you mentioned. Some ideas are good (the assembly line), but you need to use page up/down to raise doodads to place them on the right height, in cases like that. Also, some order would be a good idea, and possibly some more small detail.
Anyway, here's the pictures from Yukaboy's map - I take no credit for this;
Thx 4 mentioning all that. I was attempting a junky moon labratory, but it feels like it has something missing. I think the problem with the doorway to the inside doesn't have hills or cliffs and it literally only has the searchlights and the gate for doodads. The problem with the labs indoors is it doesn't have any computers, but I couldn't find any. As for the assembly line, I'll get right on that since I know how to do that part. I feel like the garage/factory compartment is missing something, but I can't put my finger on it. And thx for taking the pictures. I'll see if I can take my own when I update everything. :D
Edit: Can I please redo my terraining exercise? I just figured out why my original was so junky.
Edit: Whether you will let me or not, I've made a brand new labratory from scratch and I'm going to use that one because it's so much neater. My only problem is I don't understand where this take screenshot button is. Also, my map has fog which cannot be seen through the editor. I will have to take them through sc2. I'll need help on learning how to do that. Otherwise, I should have this map done with new pictures so I have a full redo of my terrain.
You can redo / do multiple entries for these WTE's I think. I believe a big reason for even having these WTE's is so people can show off their creativity, network, and bounce ideas off eachother.
And the screenshot button is the Print Screen (Prt Sc) button. If you have the viewing window highlighted (as opposed to any other windows on the left, or any side windows), if you hit the Prnt Sc key, it should save an image somewhere. I forget where's the default place at.
Thx. Lol. I've never seen that Prt Scrn Button b4. I'm gonna set up the units to face the right way, set up a reveal trigger, and take screenshots of the lab. I should have 3-6 when I'm done with my redo. I restarted completely fyi. I decided castanar everything theme would allow me to make an "actual" lab. Then I would add my own creativity into it.
Yay! I got all the screenshots done. (I took them while in-game so you'll see the taskbar) I put them in a compressed folder because I ended up taking a lot of screenshots. After awhile I 4got to take screenshots of overviews of entire rooms, but that's ok. To see the screenshots, you'll need to decompress them.
Lol, I never look at the forums list so I wouldn't know lol. :D I just look at home. Ok I'll put up my favs. I'm sorta new to this so don't blame me ok? :D
I see now why Mozared said very little people are interested in WTE's. It's already friday and we only have 4 people who have actually participated. (Not counting Mozared or ppl who chatted feedback or help) Ugh, I wish more people would show off what they can do with terraining. :(
The whole attendance to it has been a bit low as of late, yeah. Still, as long as there's still a couple of people interested, I'll keep it going. I never really expected to get more than 4-5 submissions a week when I started this, to be fair, and was amazed when I got 3-4 pages of replies when I put up my first WTE.
I might to another joint-terraining exercise for next week's WTE to see if that attracts more attention, though on the other hand, I still need to finish up the old one so it can be passed on to the coders, writers and other fine folks from this site.
I'll try to make a contribution for this week, but I've been really busy the last couple of weeks (and will be for some time ahead as well), this weeks topic seems interesting though, so I'll see what I can do.
I really would like to join more than just the one time I did before. It's just that whenever I decide to work on a map it means I end up doing my own as a 256x256 for 4 maps is just so much work, work which I would like to finish at some point.
This is my installation. Pretty easy to tell what's happening... a Hybrid's escaped and is about to break another one out!! Some scientists and a warpig are in the Operations room above wondering what the hell they're going to do, seeing as most everyone else has been killed!
I was so not digging this at first until I played with the lighting, and then it was just TOO dark... finally spotted those Omni Lights... omg what a project saver, lol. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my Terraining Noobiness :)
For the 'power / lightning' effect under the hybrid, I just used the Terrazine Capped or whatever its called, and made the Z axis at 0(which I think defaults to 10 minimum, but whatever)

Good luck, wonder what folks will cook up :)
Last week's WTE can be found here:

Finally we will figure out how babies are made.
Dang It! I can't take any pictures and I can't upload my map either. Can I have some help?
My submission; it's the inside of a biodome.
Here's my addition (and my first WTE ;) ). This particular science facility was abandoned long ago, and has fallen deeply into disrepair...

Feel free really, Yuka. This isn't a contest or anything, it's for people to improve their own skills. No need to ask my permission for such things.

you don't need to bump the WTE, its a sticky it stays at the top of the forum for the week... lol
also can you pick a few of your favourite screen shots and upload them inividually :) some of us may not want to download an image pack :)

Okay well I didn't plan this out exactly, it just sort of all came together and this took about an hour.
I was going for a processing machine that prepares specimens for scientific experimenting...//
