With the lack of interest for last week's WTE, I figured I'd try something different yet again that gives people a lot of freedom.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #11
This week's theme is going to be "Favouritism". This basically means that I am not limiting you to one tileset, terrain or idea, but that I want you to do what you do best and make your favourite thing. It could just be you creating something completely new in your favourite tileset, but it could also be you already having the idea of that awesome Bel'shir Protoss temple. I don't care what it is, as long as you love it!
Vic, that wasn't at all what I was suspecting, but that's good! Surprising stuff like that is what I do it for, even if it's just a random drawing that really hasn't got a lot to do with actual 'terraining'. I appreciate the work you put into that, as it indeed looks awesome and I can clearly see it's not a 'five minute cockup'. Interested folks should take an example from what you made - pick what you like best, and see if you can put it into the Sc2 editor.
Max, I keep thinking about lego when I look at that picture. All in all it's pretty decent to be fair, though it could be expanded upon. My main trife with it currently is that it's basically just three 'trees', and that's it. See if you can play with adding a cliff and giving it some focal points so it doesn't look as random - I do definitely like where you're going with it.
the one thing im really getting into atm is adding detail to my buildings, and BJ's Clam Shack is my latest showpiece, stage 2 is now complete.
The Clam shack is open for business, hope you brought your coin because the que's are already long.
I am still working on my first map to publish. I have a working concept that I want to create however first before I work with camera motions and triggers I would design interesting terrain... A lot of the maps I see have great concepts like AC-130, Special Forces Urban Comabat etc... and what not but the terrain is boring.... Now I haven't played any maps on protoss themed worlds.
My scenario is going to be kind of like a remake of smash and grab and welcome to the jungle terrain wise. This first mission is going to take place on a Tal' drim protected planet and the object.... capture the artifact on the planet.
I am trying to create an open world area with functional terrain.... my primary focus is creating 3 temples on the lake in which you can enter beat a boss... (preserver of the temple) and capture an artifact while your forces are being tracked down by the temple guardians.
I attached some screens of the unfinished temple...
I am trying to create a wow like map so that I can have a open world theme and have in game cut scenes with some creative camera work.... It's probably going to be a 4 player campaign or a single player... I haven't decided..... I am simply in the stage of playing around with the editor and creating terrain.
If you have any custom protoss models or ideas or links to other temple themed maps I would appreciate it because I did a rough draft of the first 2 temples in the map I need to come up with a concept for the last one....
It needs bigger pictures, Michael, though I do like what you've put up there. The first one seems a bit over the top to me but I really like the atmosphere and tricks applied in the last picture.
Well here's my run at this weeks. I tend to enjoy the dark gloomy looks, and I have a bizzare passion with draining most of the colour out as well. Believe it or not this is supposed to be a crashed ship at a cliff which happens to have an oasis alongside it. Kind of my take on irony. A beautiful life giving place, which is now home to death.
@Mozared: Go
The first 3 were taken in the editor the last in-game. I am planning on making a trigger to create a rain storm sapratically in a timed cycle... along with a day and night cycle. I was to lazy to set up the camera angles for the first three in ultra graphics mode too...
Why aren't any of these beautifully terrained maps on Battle.net? I'm sick of tower defense and pylon defense and photon defense and Nexus wars and desert strike... they're all the same damn map. lol
QMJ3, because most beautifully terrained maps are big and either not enough time has passed for people to become familiar enough with the editor, and finish such a map. Or they have been given up on because of their size.
It is a sad state of affairs. :(

I thought for a while, and I just can't think of anything good to do.
Old map, I recently started working on. The idea is you can only see where the lights are. I think I might have to scrap the idea because I'm sure it wouldn't work too well online, but it looks cool.

No need to laugh, accually took like 1 hour to make, starcraft editor is good for alot of things, but not drawing with zerglings :(
@Victiln: Go
I´m kinda stuck in a (what I call) desertedsteeljungle theme.. Amped the lightning so the colors would popout more.. :)
@Victiln: Go
Look alot more than an hour of work to me, i didnt even realize at firts he used Zerglings. I tough it was made with another texture or something.

You made buildings usings Cliffs ? And did you just imported a costum cliff texture and doodads ? Look awsome tho, more realistic/proportionnal.
@XanoX02: Go
nothing imported here, its all ingame stuff. cliffs are korhal manmade and doodads are all from the palette.

Well.. this is my attempt for this weekly exercise.. I really like the Area 51 kind of maps.. so this is my attempt to it :P
Why aren't any of these beautifully terrained maps on Battle.net? I'm sick of tower defense and pylon defense and photon defense and Nexus wars and desert strike... they're all the same damn map. lol
Dunno about any one elses, but mine are litterally only for show, no game play design intended or even possible.

Excellent work everyone. What to do.....I think I know. Another video perhaps :-)
