I ran out of my own ideas this quickly and decided to shape the next couple of WTE's around some of the suggestions I've received in the Global Information/Idea thread. The first one of these features an idea by scbroodsc2, which is the theme of a "Floating Islands" environment. Think Avatar: large floating islands with all sorts of craziness on them. Finally a good use for that pesky 'floating island' doodad!
Hmm I might have to take part in this! (This is my third post by the way, woo) Floating Islands are a bit of a favourite of mine in fiction. Already got an idea in mind :)
By the way, been reading through a lot of the old threads, I'm constantly amazed by what everyone has done.
It is much more difficult than what I though... the rocks are made with a stupid peak under. I've not worked very long, the result is "normal". These are not pre-made doodads like the Canopy. I was not able to make the fog work also... =_=
He means a skybox. If you're using the Bel'shir tileset, among others, you can just hold ctrl and scroll 'out/down' to increase the draw distance, you have to scroll quite a while to render the skybox.
Nice submissions, liking all I see here! Only jungle terrains so far, though... ?
Gurrgel's terrain reminds me of the skyship from the Avengers. I have to ask, how did you do the turbines on the side? Are those custom doodad Banshee wings?
Those banshee wings, if I am not mistaken, can be found in a toolbox which had many model parts from different unit models. The toolbox is somewhere on SC2Mapster :S I just forgot the keyword for searching it...
Now its not done but I have been working for the past three hours on it and wanted to show what I have done! :) This thing has been a pain in the butt!!! Lol but very fun! Great WTE! :)
I'd just like to note I started on mine on Monday, and I'm not copying Phenom in doing a lava world.
Anyhoo... when thinking about the theme I figured, what would Terrans do when they found a wonder of nature as a floating island. Why strap engines to it and fly it around of course! My entry is a collection of repurposed floating islands with engines strapped on, strung together and flown around the planet's lava seas as a mobile mining facility :D It's all powered by a type of geo thermal plant which generates power from the heat coming off the lava. Most the habitation and facilities are underground within the floating islands themselves.
I also included some shots of the mining operation and a nearby Lava fall, as well as a closeup on one of the bridges :)
Hopefully this qualifies for the theme.
(Sorry for the screenshot spam)
P.S. I do have another idea is mind, but I wanted to get this posted to make sure I posted before the end of the contest.
As TheHolyArk mentioned, they're Banshee Wings, taken from the Banshee model, couldn't for the world find the pack on this page (where I got it originally) but luckily I had them in an old map that I never finished.
There's a pretty good start. It looks like a complete planet right now. I think it needs some more than just rocks, though, and if you want it to be a proper island instead of a full planet it needs to be less of an orb.
Lots of submissions this week! I really like what you've done there, nice one! I think all it needs to make it cooler is more detail and such, more liveliness.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #86
Good afternoon folks!
I ran out of my own ideas this quickly and decided to shape the next couple of WTE's around some of the suggestions I've received in the Global Information/Idea thread. Have fun, and enjoy your week :)

looks like Bel Shir canopy tree island is the doodad in this WTE XD
I made this back during the beta (can't even load the map into current versions of the editor).
Not really a submission so much as a "here's something for people to think about."
I bring to you the floating isles where Xel'Naga meditated before they shaped the Protoss...

I think it could use a sky. :)

Have wanted to join in with one of these for quite some time but haven't been able to make something up before the deadline.
Some nice stuff this week, figured I should join in, spent a couple of hours on this artificial "floating island"...

Oh. Well he forgot 'box' ; anyway, I know there is a cloud-like skybox but strangely, in my editor it does not work.

Yes!!! I haz acess to my computer during school (the free time part)!
I will work on this!
+1 internets to whoever finds out what I based this on.
The black line thingo is the map border clashing with the skybox. Dunno why it's like that though.
