Well in all fairness, my friend and I started working on a map once we saw this contest posted. We will soon enter it and I think it can stand up to all the premade stuff entered so far. But you guys can be the judge of that once you see it. :D
Personally I look at all these premade entries and think no, I'm just going to let this one pass.
It feels like cheating to me. I felt terrible after the cutscene contest because my entry was against entries that had obviously been worked on for a lot longer than the thing I threw together in a few hours. There were people saying that other videos should have won, and frankly, I agree with them. If the prize had been anything meaningful I'd have given it up to the other entrants. However they should've never been allowed to enter in the first place with content they designed before the contest.
Please don't take this as a whine post to get these contests done the way I want. That isn't what I'm saying. I'm just responding to your quote of "Is sending premade work better than sending nothing?" In my opinion, it isn't.
If you are talking about me I forgot to say that I'm making a new boss for my map, I'm not going to release the old Thor fight ;)
I just spoke with Progammer (who helped vjeux organize this contest) and he said that he will talk to vjeux about a possible extension that would give us at least the weekend. So there is a good chance we could have a deadline of Monday or later. We'll get the official say from vjeux hopefully soon.
I would actually prefer if someone were using a "premade."
I say this because I'd much rather someone spend time to create a boss for a map that they plan on releasing (or is already in circulation) than to create a boss in isolation that would never be seen again.
With that said, most of the entrants (so far) seem to have created the boss from scratch, even if they had pre-existing framework.
This is my team's submission for the WoW Boss Contest. Boss name: Ter'Ama.
Part 1:
Part 2:
Additional Information:
Zakariahliklikleh and myself worked on this map. We'd also like to thank SweetZombieJesus for providing his excellent library we used for the hero selection as seen in the video Part 1.
What is in the videos
We were a total of 4 players but we recommend playing it with 5. All heroes were level 2 and had 2 abilities to use when facing Ter'Ama. But there is a total of 5 abilites per hero (all unique) and they all have 2 additional higher levels each.
Taunt puts you back on top of threat forcing the enemy to attack you
Defensive Stance has a long cooldown but provides 70% reduction to all damage taken for 10 seconds.
To use his abilites, Rory Swann gains energy for every point of damage he takes.
Egon Stetmann (Healer) : [Level 1] Heal and [Level 1] Guardian Shield
Heal is a channeled restore that heals life every second
Gurdian Shield is the blue dome around the tank every so often seen in videos 1 and 2. This absorbs up to 300 damage for 10 seconds.
Egon Stetmann has very good energy Regeneration allowing him to last for a long time in fights (we all die otherwise :) )
Jim Raynor (Damage) : [Level 1] Snipe and [Level 1] Impact Rounds
Snipe deals a large amount of damage at a target from very long range.
Impact rounds deals a bit of damage but weakens the target making reducing it's attack speed.
Jim Raynor's big advantage is that he's not energy based. His abilities only have a cooldown cost which makes him very useful in combat. All his damage is ranged physical.
Psionic Sphere is the photon cannon like orb that Tassadar hearls towards the target. Deals a lot of Damage and splash.
Mental Instability is a curse that stays on the target for 10 seconds. If it stays it's full duration, the curse detonates and deals damage to the target as splash and also creates a small damage over time for 12 additional seconds on the target. (Looks like the MotherShip Vortex on Ter'Ama in the video Part 1)
This class gains energy based on the damage it deals. His spells are very powerful but require a lot of energy to conjure and thus he needs to use his regular attack often to unload the large damaging spells.
Since the last class (Zeratul) was not used in this video, I'll leave it up to you guys to check it out yourselves. We hope you enjoy the video and would also like to note, this is just the first boss on the map. The published version has a second boss which we couldn't get to but he is much cooler and worth the effort to get to. Also much MUCH harder than Ter'Ama. :D
Ter'Ama:
Cleave (Passive): Every time he swings he cleaves people in front of him.
Bile Bomb (Cast): Every 15 seconds he'll throw some slime at you which ignites into a ball of fire dealing damage every second when u stand in it.
Enrage (Cast): He enrages doubling his damage and his attack speed and his movement speed (hits very very very hard). This happens once every 35 seconds.
Time Limit: If he is not killed within the allocated time, he makes a Final deadly enrage that will kill anything in his path and lose you the game.
There is one last thing I'd like to note, in the video part 2 you could hear at one point the healer on ventrilo tells me he needs to regenerate energy so we used the landscape to our advantage. Basically we waited for his enrage to be used up and then in that window where he moves at normal speed and enrage is still not available we had him chase me (Tank) around the crater of lava on the upper right corner of the map. On future boss releases there will be fights where you will need to use the land to your advantage to succeed.
Alright you've got a 3 day extension:) You have up to monday night to polish your boss!
TheDoomHammer, just a reminder: you have to give out the map file :)
The contests have two main goals. The first one is to create great things to show off the editor abilities. And the second one is to help each other by sharing how it has been done.
I know a lot of you are afraid of sharing the map files because of stealers. However the people that does that are usually not good enough to do big changes on the map, they tend to just copy & paste it and change the credits. The contests are focusing on one part of a map, so they will have to put the boss into their map. It's way beyond their capacities :)
We're still a little unclear of what the map file can contain. Are we allowed to submit only the boss in question in the map file or do we have to submit the entire map?
Music is pretty unfitting and horrible, get some music from some game that makes good boss music, and not WoW please:p cool boss. can't wait to play that map!

If you liked this boss, the boss after him is nearly 200 times cooler/more epic to fight. Unfortunately for the music, I'll see what I can do :P
What about the video. Can you make the video with the other stuff and post different map then? :O
This contest is supposed to be fun, it's really not about finding ways to break the rules. Either you made a boss that you want to show off and you post a video of the boss + the associated map. Or you are too scared about losing your precious map and you don't enter :)
Wow I love what you did in this map, rather than making a unit with too much health which takes an hour to kill and does the same things over and over again, you made a boss with a rather low amount of health, without any sort of 'tank, spank & heal' combo, but just with 2 people who need to know what they are doing.
This seems more challenging than the maps where u have a healer autoheal a tank who takes damage all the time without beeing able to do anything to prevent himself from taking damage, with a boss that only lasts long because it has too much health.

As I said, I only started playing around with the editor not long ago. I've been learning about actors/behaviors and the like from scratch, and everything else I've Frankensteined together from stuff I've pulled here and there from the site. I'll probably fix things up when I have a better handle on what I'm doing. Currently I'm trying to figure out the veteran system among other things.
From a boss design stand-point, I think too much inspiration draws from WoW-centric designs: Tank and spank. The most interesting boss fights in WoW from a personal stand point are the ones that don't need a tank (or the tank is a just there to justify a person rolling a tank spec), like say the Shade of Aran in where it was about actively reacting to what he was doing. The main inspiration from my boss design was from old school 'bosses' that you'd see on side or top-down side scrollers. Games in where you were lucky if you were able to take more than one hit and not die, and tended to spray the screen with bullets of death.
When you think about WoW boss mechanics, they rely on the tank/healer/DPS trinity. Many old games it was more about temporary invincibility, shields/powerups to allow you to take an extra hit, extra lives, and on the go power ups; and when it came to bosses memorizing their attack patterns. Designing a boss in where the player is expected to die in a handful of hits as opposed to creating a boss that is to overcome healing done to it are different creatures.
By the way if you want to try "Dungeons - Guardians of Fire" it's currently published on the NA servers, just search for it, and you will need to be 5 players. It's sorta doable with 4, but it will be really hard.

Your weekend or mine? Texas is having their state fair so I get 4 days off! =D ( I know the answer I just feel the need to rub it in.) :P
Whoa, weird, just noticed this... This contested started on my b-day and ended on my brothers b-day.
