I'm currently working on Ark , an Island Trolls Tribes-inspired "survival rpg"
Concept
Two tribes of players will face off on a wild, dangerous tropical island. They will have to build, grow, and strengthen before taking up arms against one another for ownership of the island.
Progress
This map is currently in the planning stage.
Terraining is currently underway.
[Roughly 40% Complete]
I would say that custom models would be very important to my enojoyment. To play a map abouut an island of trolls, and not see any trolls would be rather strange.
Awesome map idea I'm excited about this... almost something I would want to make myself. In fact, let me know if you want help with anything ([email protected]). I don't even mind doing grunt work.
I would say custom models would be great (WoW is perfect)... but just for the characters and maybe monsters. Keep the rest as is. The screenshots inspired me a lot... the environment looks great.
Player roles could be classes (people love that), but ultimately you could make it so based on your actions you get certain skills (ie building a lot will give you access to advanced building skills etc).
Sorry I didn't play the original (or I can't remember it). But I played a ton of war3 maps so I must have played something similar...
Thanks for the input and the kind words. I watched a lot of your tutorials when I was starting out, and I'm still somewhat newbish with data editing and triggers unfortunately, so I may well take your offer up :)
I was thinking of yes, doing all player models as WoW models now. Some of the wildlife from WoW would be great to bring over(i.e. crabs, crocodiles, sea monsters) but a lot of the SC stuff is good for that too.
I've updated the OP. I read what you said, and that sounds better than just plain-jane classes. Fits into what I was thinking about a skill tree too.
The only things I'm seriously wondering about atm are some features that were extremely easy to do in WC3, namely environmental/structural interaction. I.e., you can't chop down trees or build structures. I would have to find the assets somewhere(and I don't think WoW has them), which might be difficult. Trees would be easier.(I would just make them a neutral unit one could "search" like a corpse.)
Wao! It really looks amazing!
Tell me if you need help with triggers/data, i would really like to give an hand if this will help to bring the relase date closer.
I loved WC3's ITT
I would say make it 4 tribes, 1 for each island since 2 tribes would be abit out of action while 4 would be constant pressure. also, i would not think every class should have full inventory, some fighter classes should have 2 less inventory or 1 since it is very obvious what would happen if they were to get full gear. in the classic ITT warrior class only had 3 due to their high damage and tankiness, i wouldn't say to make it 3 slots but at least 4 or 5 to balance things out.

-A variety of dangerous and docile wildlife
Much more to come
Questionnaire
Something like this may be posted in the general forum at some point, but I'm going to leave this here for now.
1. Do you prefer classes, or another system for determining player roles?
2. What is your optimal number of tribes?[Current plan is two]?
3. What are your feelings on NPC shops/ships for items?
For those who played Island Troll Tribes in WCIII
1. What did you like about ITT's resource/crafting system? What didn't you like? What could be improved?
2. What did you like about the original ITT? What could be improved?

I was thinking about this, and it was kind of silly. I also realized I wouldn't have enough models for wildlife with SCII alone. I'll remove it.

But anyway, thanks for the post. Just my musings.
Just going to update with a few more terrain shots. I'd say terraining is 30%-40% done.

Thanks!
Terraining is progressing steadily, hope to have it done fairly soon.

I hope you can raise hawker as a zombie since you necroed this thread (I would like to see this project finished)
