Yeah i played it a few times, and i agree the concept is AWESOME.... just it wasn't as fun as id hope it would be. (was still very fun though) my main problem with it was the CONSTANT leavers after like 1-2 rounds cause the immature gamers of this generation didn't want to wait for the round to end once they died. There were also a few bugs that i saw, like double terrain spawning causing areas that were completely blocked off, and spawning of 2-3 bases at once so each person had like 3 bases.
There were also a few bugs that i saw, like double terrain spawning causing areas that were completely blocked off, and spawning of 2-3 bases at once so each person had like 3 bases.
Its not really a bug its when retards decide they don't want the map they chose and pick another one quickly(I'm pretty sure tho i haven't done it because i don't want to ruin the game for other players.)
Also I'm pretty sure the map is built out of buildings that are the square model in white. So you should remove some of the bigger maps due to lag the one I did notice that lagged was the maul one. Other then that I love this game I think its a lot of fun there is a lot of different strategy's you can do. Its really cool and you have to be on your toes or end up like me missing a few erasers and dying. I understand the unit cap but a lot of players were complaining about it. Like its useless to buy another base because they don't share upgrades. You should make all 3/3 3/3 3/3 upgrades be cross shape but just have to purchase additional ability's for the different shapes. That will make it much more useful to buy another shape. (I know income is useful but if you have to upgrade 2 different shapes and you can only have a max of 50 its more of a penalty then a bonus owning another shape.)
One more thing I noticed your able to move when the map is zoomed out before the announcer says GO. That should be fixed I always beat others to the 2/3 money patch spots. Not that that is a bad thing it just is unfair. Also you should make it so when the game does start the shape base is selected instead of having to select it.
Other then that I truly hope you win this game is awesome. Easily one of the most original entry's into the contest.
hey the issue about the terrain.... it actually happened when the game started up and no one was picking.... =\ at least in my game thats what happened
I thought host picked the first map, so the game automatically does it. I guess that is why it happened in my game first too. So yeah it is a bug. Well should make it so host picks first so that bug doesn't happen. Also another cool thing since there's so many maps maybe make 4-5 choices available at each selection. If you could track data like i know sotis does(Kill and death and wins). You could find out the most popular map and get rid of the least played ones. Though at the moment no one knows all the maps besides you haha.
JustaDK and RailTracer, can you provide more details on that bug? The double-spawning terrain bug was one very very early in development and I haven't seen in since the first week.
The unit cap is set at 50 and will not be changed, it was originally 100 but with 4 people, if they all hit the 100 unit cap, the game becomes very laggy. Most computers can't handle that amount of data. I will however be reducing the cost of making an additional base drastically in the next version. 200 is the current number I'm considering, however I've heard some requests for as far down as 150.
I haven't seen much lag issues with the larger maps, but Maul specifically has a bug due to the location of one of the key places to be. The corridors in the south section that lead to two cash stations, if a player keeps a base there and just spawns units, they become too cluttered and the lag spikes for some reason. I'll be removing the entry into that corridor.
EDIT: I'll also be uploading to the EU servers as soon as possible, I have someone who's going to upload it, merely waiting for him to log on.
EDIT2: Taking a second look at the triggering, I see the bug may have resurfaced if a player quits during the voting process. I'll see if I can replicate it.
I saw it this afternoon on the news page while I was at school and my first impression was "wow". I mean, it looked so simple yet with so much variety in the gameplay, I wanted to try it.
So here I am, fresh finished a game vs bot (yes I know, but no one joined and my friends are offline :P) and I tried to figure out everything that was possible to do in this map. Well, I totally enjoyed it, it's simple, clean graphics because the colors are so easy to recognize, I really liked the competitive aspect (It's always my first condition for a map to be great for me) and there was a lot of simple possibilities with the upgrades
You did a great job, I just hope it'll get popular because you deserve it. I really like the concept. Just one suggestion: Don't add too many complex things in future versions! A lot of things that kill maps (in my opinion) are simple great maps that adds leveling, plenty of new spells, more resources types... well you see where I'm going with this. Keep it like this and focus on the balancing and the announcements of it so this map become more popular.
If you are open to more suggestions, I'll play it more often and tell you what I think, and of course, you decide what you do with your map. :)
Well this is what happened when the bug appeared in my game. There was 4 ppl, full house. The map was a Star Shape map... not sure what the name of it was. However saying that 2 terrain combined is not entirely true i guess. When it happened, the terrain was mostly still the Star Shape, but it had random lines or random spots where the area was just blocked off. I spawned 3 different bases and so did everyone.
As for the debate about supply limit, i would prefer 100 supply as well, but as you stated, it might cause lag for some.... so how about allowing people to choose in the beginning if they want like 50, 75, 100 or w/e like you allow people to decide on the number of rounds. Just a suggestion i guess, since i would personally love to see the 100 supply =)
Oh i forgot to mention, one of the levels needed to be fixed. At one point, you could stand in the middle and Mine 5 different $ spot at once, while the opposite side which was suppose to mirror it, could only mine 3 since the other 2 $ were to far away.
JustaDK, or to anyone that experiences that bug, PLEASE PLEASE record the replay for me. I can't replicate the bug.
The voted supply limit is a great idea, I may implement that in the near future.
The map with the 5-spot mine is defniitely a bug, it's the one that looks like the Marine Stimpack icon, named Aaah that's the stuff. Next version will be moving the right and left cash stations away from the stimpack shaft, and cutting one cash station from the top, for a maximum of only 2 multi-harvests.
Also, I'm looking for a graphic artist to design a nice looking loading screen for me. PM me if interested.
To EssBee1337: Suggestions are always welcome, and I'm going to be posting a link to the sc2mapster's forum for Shape Wars in the loading screen of the next game, where it will give details on how to submit maps to me. I can literally add a thousand arenas if I wanted, so I'm open to having people design their own.
EDIT: Was able to replicate the bug, and proceeded to squelch it. I apologize, this probably has happened to a lot of players, as it had to do with a timer on the voting process. Lots of updates coming soon.
undeadsee, I've seen some people mentioning a patch that will allow cross-server publications, if that doesn't work, I'm sure I can find a SEA server player who would be willing to allow me to post it.
Version 1.1 will be finished later today, and solves MANY of the issues I've gotten back from feedback, including people leaving after death! I've decided to add in a small minigame you play if you are the first two players to die, which will still let you increase your score. This will give players something to do for fun, as well as add a little edge as they can still regain some points for an early loss.
In case you haven't gotten my messages on IRC; I believe the dual map start bug is due to players not voting and the vote time timing out. It probably starts one map because players have at least partially voted, and another map because it assumes nobody voted? Just a thought.
Ok, not sure if this is the bug everyone here seems to be talking about.. but this is really not a good first impression to your map. First game in and I get one of my shapes stuck and then i reach the unit cap with the stuck unit and can't do anything at all but collect money and run for my life.
Thanks for all the reports, I'm sorry such a grievous bug made its way into the final product, definitely no shot at the contest now. It's all fixed, the new version with much more than bug fixes will be uploaded tonight if I can find some testers.
EDIT: 1.1 is now Public on US servers and will be posted to EU soon. It fixes the dreaded double spawn glitch, fixes the FPS problems, makes the game more bright and vibrant, adds new features, and a slew of other thigns. Visit my new shape wars forum on SC2mapsters for a full changelog.
This looks amazing. Even if it isn't perfectly balanced or terribly fun, the concept is just awesome and in all honestly I hope you win the contest.

This is great! Totally original work, I can't wait to get online and see how it plays.
still waiting on Eu release >.> looks so awesome can't wait for it... sigh...
A friend of mine recently came across the video of shape wars and now can't wait to play to it. He already is the true fanboy.
oh hey, the outline of the picture used for the youtube video reminds me of The Lost Vikings in the Game Over screen
@QueenGambit: Go
That map is titled 'Tribute to the Lost', and that's exactly what it's outlining. Good call! There's references to even older games in there too.
As a side note, 1.2 is now public, and fixes the framerate issues a lot of people were having. It will be posting it to EU as soon as possible.
