Hello everyone!
name irrelevant.
I spent many years toying around with warcraft 3 world editor and making some nice maps with it. i first learned to use it through hive workshop and i had a blast.
however, as time passed, wc3 dies more and more, until no one played my maps anymore. so then, i decided to move on to starcraft 2 editor. and that's where my problems began.
1. There was no website that organized resources with pictures and accuracy and moderation like hive workshop. i've tried downloading some models here but its too messed up and inconvenient.
2. There were no medieval models that i liked for my first hero, thats a guy in black full plate armor with crimson hair and two burning swords. his name is ash, and he engages in melee combat with fire magic and his swords.
3. There are no medieval units and buildings for me to use in my maps (i absolutely hate sci-fi settings)
4. The new editor is 50% different to the world editor, it got me some time to get used to the terrain mechanics alone, i have no idea bout the rest :S
5. I need the council of you wise men to decide of whether if i want a hero defense or a AOS map. which one do you think will be better?
6. I'd probably need a team as i had before, composed of an at least amateur programmer and 3d-2d artist.
there goes my rant. can any of you fine gentlemen help me in starting my starcraft 2 map? perhaps guide me and introduce me to the community and resources? thank you ^^
If there was a hive workshop for sc2, we would be far better off. There will never be many custom assets like the hive has. You can use the wc3 mod to use warcraft3 units and such. Obviously, there are peole who do custom assets, but yeh know... You will need to pay them. As far as resources go, we have a Wiki which helps explain what different functions mean. and the vast majority of them are just the tooltips copied over.
If you want a popular arcade map, stay away from AoS style maps; or even directly competitive maps, which require micro and such. Defense games work well.
data work (units, abilities, items, ect) are gonna take about 5-6X as long as they took in wc3. The trigger editor however is better in every way; barring a few things you can no longer do, that affect no one but me.
On mapster, you get help with a specific problem at a time usually. "I need to make my units respawn, how to do that?" then someone replies. You need to be able to understand what they are saying though. No one is gonna do your work for you. If you make an entire map, start to finish, and it is good, you likely still wont get direct help. It just doesn't happen around here.
The search function on this website is absolutely terrible. Search "respawn" and there is no priority for anything. you will get a post from 2008 about jesus rising from the dead. Better to just post a question than try to find your own answer.

Or you could use Google's custom search function. Simply type "site:sc2mapster.com" in the search bar first, followed by your actual search terms, and you're good to go.
The search function isn't as horrible as you described it. I found the answer every time if it existed in the first place. Try to give better search words if you don't find something.

Thank you for the honest answers. so i cant find medieval warcraftish models for free? such a shame, i had great ideas :(

I will say this though:
You can make a great game, without having your ideal models. If you make a good game, I am sure someone will step up to help you make custom models for it; or you will feel inspired enough to commission the models.
As said above, you can use all of the warcraft 3 models in starcraft 2, through the warcraft mod; which would be a great start for you.
I took that in consideration but wouldnt it be wired to have low quality models in a high quality template? Heroes of the storm models would serve better in such a case.
Anyways my skype is anderhil1337 if you want to answer my questions without flooding the forums. your help is much appreciated ^^
