My name is Jason and I am a psychology professor and co-director of the Gains Through Gaming Lab at NC-State. We are starting up a new pilot study which will use SC2 and I am looking for someone to develop one or two custom maps during the month of August.
As this is a pilot study we don't currently have funding to reimburse your time, but that could change over the next 6 months. You will receive acknowledgement in any scholarly papers we write, and if you are interested there is the possibility that you could participate in publications as a co-author.
If you are interested and want more info please PM me here. You can also learn more about our research by visiting www.gainsthroughgaming.org.
Will we see results or something of whatever you are going to teach/study?
I would like to know more whatkind of stuff you are looking for so I could decide wheter I could do something to help you or wheter its something that doesnt take too much time to make (since its free).
The maps are going to be used in the context of a cognitive training study. We are going to first use undergrads then we are going to use older adults The results of the study will be presented at conferences both psychology and gaming conferences. Check out our website for examples of previous presentations. The map builder that joins our tean can be as involved in the overall study as he/she wants to be. We are hoping that this will turn into a collaboration and the map designer will be around when we have grant money.
I honestly do not know how much time it would take to make the maps since I have never made one. But I can tell you that we want one map that requires the player to do 2 main tasks. An overly simplistic example would gather resources (task 1) and defend from attackers (task 2). Then we need different versions of this map where one task is the focus over the other and we also want to adjust difficulty level.
Sounds simple enough. Gathering resources in sc2 is rather simple. You just put workers on minerals, train ´more of them and build few suply depots.
You want it to be similar to normal sc2 melee game or make a totally new game? Modificating the normal sc2 games would be rather simple...like the AI is already there and you just need to share resources and few minor modifications for normal game to work with 2 players working with same base vs. AI. On the other hand sc2 is fairly hard to learn as it is.
If you want custom units. More complex resource gathering and such then it can become more time consuming.
Also there is this map called "craftcraft" on bnet. Its kinda like base building/resource gathering (it works best when team works together, some people gather resources and others maintain base).
The more specific you are on the task. Easier its to say how hard its to make. Have you played sc2 before? If not...then anything I said most likely wont make any sense at all :D
Sounds interesting, and seeing as I'm interested in studying psychology myself I think this might be a good thing to participate in. There are two problems though unfortunately
I'm currently working on a relatively big project and am sort of way behind schedule (not that I have a schedule, but if I had one, I'd be doing pretty badly)
This is the bigger one: I have all the time in the world, but motivation to keep me going is questionable. Sometimes I can work on maps for a week or two practically all day long, other times I can't get myself to do anything apart from open the editor.
I'd really like to help though. Send me a PM when you have specifics as to what needs to be done and I'll try to do it. You can contact me over skype as well if you want to (My email is in my sig, you can find me on skype using that)
I have played SC2 and we have a doctoral student that plays heavily but is not a map designer. The example I gave above was very simple and I expect it to be a little more complicated as we want the 2 tasks to map on directly to a specific cognitive ability. This would be a single player map where the participant plays against the computer.
With all that said, we are really looking for someone who is interested in collaborating rather than just doing what we tell you.
If you are interested in psychology, research, or going to grad school (or med school) this would be a good opportunity for you.
Well, as I said, I'm interested :p I'd really need more specifics though - I don't need you to give me a completely detailed plan of the map and so on, but i'd need a more specific explanation than now so that I know what you guys need or I might end up making something useless :p
Yes almaity is probly a good guy to take the task. I havent studied psychology and with this amount of information Im not so interested.
Generally would be nice to know what kind of SPECIFIC things you need to study.
Like one player must mine specific type of ore so base defences work RED turrets: red ore, BLUE turrets: blue ore...etc... (so you would see how well he can multitask? :E).
or
5 marines enter a spaceship. Then 3 marines leave the ship. How many marines are in the ship? (memory, calculation)
I dunno If Im making any sense :D
edit* As a side note. You can do pretty much anything you can imagine in sc2 (certain limitation excists ofc, but for studying things I dont think there will be problems). With the amount of information its really hard to tell what kind of time investment you expect from the mappers. Do you want complex stuff or simple stuff? I just cannot tell without any information or examples. Do you want to save data? Do you want to have 100 different excerices or just 10?

I noticed your links are invalid due to the horrendous proprietary forum software. So;
Fixed
Good looking out. Thanks!
