This is just an idea but would like feed back as to what you thinnk about it before i get started IF i get started on it.... was thinking about making a game where you play as a GOD and the decisions you make affect a computer AI that your in charge of. you do not have direct control of units but can 'influence' thier tactics in how they play. in the end it would be a WAR type game but what would make it different is that you would not control the units in the war but rather influence the tide of war in your favor. good or bad idea. opinions?
Well I might change the name of your role a bit, as I would be a little intimidated to be GOD. That is just personal preference though.
Overall the idea isn't bad, just sounds like a LOT of work for a potentially small amount of users interested. You might be able to make it more attractive with more content, storyline, that kind of thing. However, this just increases the amount of work. The real challenge here would be to keep the idea intact while letting the user feel like he is in fact making a difference in the game.
Be interesting to see what you come up with if you pursue this, just I tend to be a little on the cautious side about new ideas, not all of them work out.
sure can change the name to OVER LORD or Demi God or King or ECT..... so you dont feel all 'intimidated'... lol.
dont really care if its alot of work, i only do this on my free time anyways. i can understand if your playing this type of game and you try to do something and nothing happens everyone is going to say BS and leave. that just means when you create the game it has to be more interactive and less to chance. a thought is make it sorta like achievments for your AI to do and work towards. like common tactic of rush lings and stuff like that. sorta like programming your AI while you see it. it would have a set base line for a build so even if you do nothing it will carry on doing basic build and mining but what makes it better is what you get them to do with out actually doing it yourself. :D
I see, sounds interesting, might make me actually be interested in melee, if that is all I have to do. Will there be a gold/platinum ladder button? It might be nice to introduce elements that don't typically exist as well to make it more interesting, such as new abilities, furthered upgrade levels, overall move speed/attack speed?
@Deadzergling: It might be nice to introduce elements that don't typically exist
sure there can be some higher abilities that would transend the normal or standard abilities. it would have to come at a cost like you get a set amount of points to use in the game and to use the abilities would require the points. more advanced the ability the more points type of thing. an idea that i just thought of is what is a god if he can not heal his minions... so make an ablity that heals all the units.. just a thought. can have several things like that, also an enrage or something to help your AI attack...
notice everything is to 'help' your AI win not to control them. dam 'free will' thing, lol.
Sounds interesting. There was a similar game in WC3 I think it was called like gods and men or something. It was where one person was god in the center of the map and was all powerful. Had all kinds of awesome powers, controlled angels and demons. Would summon units to players wherever he wished. All of the players in the game were controlled by people though not AI. (Which i think would be better, effect the world of people instead of AI) Could give buffs and other stuff to the players, they all waged war on one another. While God sat on his throne playing with the world. Was a pretty cool game. I think something like that if done right would be a lot of fun on SC2. The game was pretty popular on war3.
Oh and yea. I think DEMI GOD would be the best! Demi god just sounds cool to me. Plus you could make him some what vulnerable to the people. Maybe give them a chance of actually killing the Demi God. If they were lucky enough. I think that would be a fun concept.
I was thinking of making a map, but I couldn't find the right abilities and triggers for it.
Players
How about making a remake of the WC3's 'God's domination'? Basically, it's an entirely flat area, with nothing but the 8 'cave men' these cave men will start out and build their own hut, where they can start spawning kids, which in turn will grow up to adults.
Now you have options to turn those adults into warriors (by running them into a barracks/training ground thing) or workers (which they start out as, but I think you can upgrade them to make them better, permanent workers).
If I remember correctly there are 3(/4) resources you need (ish): Food, Gold, Wood (and Power)
Then it's just a game of evolution, you can upgrade your main house, to get better tech etc (then you'll have to start building power plants to power your buildings and upgrade stuff) then it's basically just a war against the other players. They can ally themselves, if they so desire.
God
Now this is an interesting and fun role, as the god can shape the terrain, add trees, animals (hostile and passive) and bandits.
I left out gold, because gold is very special.
To build gold mines, you require mana.
And how do you acquire mana? You get worshipped.
Players can in turn build a sacrificial ground (and when they upgrade it's a church) where they can sacrifice animals or workers/warriors (killing them of course) or worship (later). This will grant god mana, to build gold mines (and a couple of other things which I can't remember), meaning it's crucial you worship him, to give him mana and then he might reward you by building a gold mine 'close' to your base.
Basically, it's a sandbox game for the god, shape terrain, spawn animals/bandits and place out gold mines/trees and watch the players fight.
Whereas the players, it's like a half-scripted survival game with evolution and tactics evolved.
It was super fun, especially with 8 (+1/God) players.
Very interesting indeed. the problem with players being human race and 1 god is, if the god is going to be one sided your f'ed hard. you will have 7vs1 roll fest going on... imo there is to much of a chance for abuse. so how you can avoid this epic abused game play is make everyone on the same level. 7gods 7AI's. the 7gods would have Passive ability's that can Aide thier computer to victory. examples would be exposing your enemy's position for your computer to attack. or giving them extra mineral fields or vespene geysers at thier base. making a beacon for your computer as an attack point. that could be good being if your computer masses an attack at the wrong time you could totaly expose the base at most i would consider an ability to buff your computers units for a set amount of time, like a stim pack.

I have had a similar thought. If you can make the god role interesting enough, go ahead.
