I haven't been involved in the SC2 custom scene in a long time, but I used to be an avid WC3 RPG player, especially the long, "open" style RPGs with save codes, such as The Black Road.
What is the best SC2 RPG to play to get that feeling back?
Not sure a lot of those exist on SC2, at least yet, give me a few months to get my RPG in reasonable shape. I thought Shadows of the Tal'Darim RPG, Zerg Hunter RPG, Dragon something RPG were amusing, but only last you about half a day at best. Yes I know, Dragon had a ton of bugs and other issues, but the guy did a good job of picking a name out that would get interest, and it was the closest to what one would call an open RPG. I would call Zerg Hunter the best done out of those 3 for replay value, although I certainly don't like having to get my XP back every game.
It'll be a while before any of the highest quality ORPGs to come out. They take a long time to make, and SC2's only been out for what, a year and a half?
I hate when people say this. When you got nothing concrete, you cant say they are better.
While sc universe seems like a polished one and the pvp demo was interesting (as in pretty fluent and smooth wasd combat system). Im still not
exactly sure if its going to be an excellent piece. There are many limitations in the editor and something you should not cross them.
When I actually get a good rpg in my hands, then I might change my mind. Wc3 did have some really cool rpgs. One of the most interesting ones was the
FF rpg. It hand interesting style and fun combat.
Honestly, RPGs in sc2 fail to impress me. Gameplay and story seem to be completely neglected. It seems like mappers are more concerned about the routine boring mechanics (5-6 levelable abilities, stat points and a few half decent ones have talent trees) rather than actually making them fun and flexible to play.
I won't be impressed until an rpg with a custom ui, at least 10 abilities per class, and the ability to experiment with a combination of abilities is released.

I am dissapointed you are not impressed by my projects. Im not going to do custom UI though since it takes more time than its worht to me (normal dialogs look fine to me).
Im heavilly trying to make the gameplay interesting. Unique boss fights with AI and skills that are always usefull. I will most likely try to get all skills to be useful in PvP too.Well I dont have too many RPG elements yet. But Im thinking of starting to add some charecters and mechanics to give the game a better athmosphere.
Look my zombie defence if you are interested (It does not look like and rpg yet though...)

What would be different if a custom ui replaces the standard blizzard ui?
Does each of your RPGs exist by classes? So I guess Skyrim wasn't a RPG in your eyes.
But yes, the last point is always interesting.
Dia blo: mortal shroud is pretty cool. Still not quite there for me compared to some of the old broodwar RPGs (Spellsword etc.) but we'll get some nice ones eventually. I think because it's more difficut to make maps with SC2 we won't see as many as previously.
Then you should check out the RPG Enexy and I are making :)
100% custom UI, shit tons of randomly generated items, and 800+ abilities. (No definite classes though, it's a bit like Elder Scrolls in that respect, if that makes any sense. Basically you can be a certain class by only using abilities from talent trees under a certain category.)
A different UI doesn't have anything to do with gameplay (unless you do something different than simply changing the look), but it has more to do with the projected image and is a direct reflection of the makers dedication and passion for their project. To me, default UI is just lazy and makes it feel like the maker rushed the project out the door.
I do think of Skyrim as an RPG, however, I don't like open world/ended rpgs (feel free to flame, I don't carry an extinguisher so have fun), thus I don't enjoy RPGs of Skyrims caliber. It just seems like an empty and boring play box. But, on the other hand, I've never spent more than a few hours in a Oblivion/Skyrim type of game. It's just the way I play, if I can't get into it I don't like the game and I am not going to force myself to play it because everyone and their dog thinks its amazing. This is no way is meant to flame Skyrim, just a personal opinion!
I think I get what your getting at with the skyrim reference though. An rpg doesn't need classes per say. Mix and matching any "class" skill and/or ability to make a unique character would be cool too. But humans categorize things by nature, its a form of rational thinking. So even if there were no "classes", players would make up their own names for popular builds, thus making it almost unavoidable.

That actually sounds like something right up my ally, where can I find more info about it?

It's an RPG like you said above. Although there is no certain "class", players can mix and match and name their build, so essentially making classes on the fly.

Frontline can keep you playing for a good amount of time, however all of the highquality ORPGs are still in development, such as these
Starcraft Universe
Rise of Nigma
Thanks for all your replies!
I look forward to the release of the in progress ones!

Oh man I know what you mean.
I loved twilight's eve from warcraft 3.

It was indeed a great map, but the ones in development for SC2 are far better than any wc3 rpg.

So have any of the higher quality ORPGs been finished?
Or even some of the regular ones.
