I'm thinking of a game with a ship for every person to play with, in a medium-large space area. You can go ship-view and space-view, have your own avatar, walk around your ship, load up torpedo's, have friends on your ship, etc etc
It would take a lot of money to be able to buy a ship though, you would be stuck on a planet running odd jobs for NPC's, or accosting travelers and taking their credits, until you made enough to buy a space-worthy ship.
Lots of people, and NO save games. That would make people start off with shitloads of stuff, and leave the 1 or 2 people on the planet all alone :(
You could add people as "friends" in game to ally, as well as "Grudges" to make an enemy.
You can make things at ports or planets, like torpedo's and armor plating (or repair the one you already have). But this would either require credits, or a less amount of credits and metal.
Metal is another thing, you can go off and LAND on asteroids or planets and prospect for good deposits. Then a mini-game would appear so you can mine the minerals, depending on the difficulty of the deposit. Until later, when you can auto-mine but that's later in my head and I cant think of it right now, but that takes longer of course. The easier the difficulty of the deposit, the faster you mine it of course, but the harder is it the more you get, but you mine slower depending on your skill.
For fights you can literally blow up other peoples ships and then salvage the leftovers. You get a few items, randomized from the opponents cargo hold.
You can also joint-buy a ship with other people, and since ships are not "owned" by you in a trigger-sense, if you leave it unlocked people can steal it. Of course, if you just let them in... that's your fault.
That's just a basic idea of what I have in mind, and since I fail, so, so, so hard at the Data Editor but I'm good at trigs, it might be an idea looking into with someone.
What are your ideas?
sounds like a good idea for an ENITIRE GAME NOT A SINGLE MAP
im not sure if you could even make a map with all of those features and still have it with in the size limits of blizzards publishing limit sorry but a map as you picture it will not happen
With all the features you have outlined... to fully produce that map, even to a playable format (ie: all features implemented in their most basic form)... would easily take a team of 5 to 10 people, just over a year.
Also, the concept is pretty much Eve: Online, and all it's inspiration sources.
I am making an Eve like map with many other new stuff, but without players walking in the ships, which is kind of useless.
I am very experienced with the editor, but it will take me month to make a fairly playable version.
If you would do the map what you suggest as full time job and you would have lots of experience with the editor, than I think it would take more than 3 month for you to make it alone. Without contents like quests, designed items, NPC-s and so on.
In my map I plan to make almost everything to be auto generated... so It wont consume insane amount of time to add quests, terrain, npcs, creeps...
Out of curiosity. I've made a proof of concept that relies on cameras, minimap bounds, clever region usage, dialogs and background models. You can pretty much have everything listed in your OP but no walking around your ship, or actually being on a planet.

I'd suggest you start small, then get bigger.
