I am currently working on a map that is a rip-off of the FF-series.
Why? -Because I love the old games in the series and think the newer ones are crap, so I wanted to make a "new FF game old school style." (Mostly inspired by FFVII.)
I haven't done much, there's still a lot to be done. Here's what I've done so far, gathered in a short youtube clip:
I want to hear your thoughts on the clip.
Does it look promising? Would you want to play a map like this, once it's done?
Does anything look weird? (Keep in mind that this map is still very early in development.)
I am mostly focusing on re-creating the old school combat system that FFVII had. Thoughts on the combat system is much appriciated.
I would say its a good start. Compared to other FF copies we seen so far it looks quite bad.
Add the timeline so you can see when charecters can attack (greate dialog item -> progress bar)

If you make it like that heck yea people want to play it. You need to work on it a bit more and Im sure it will be fine :)
sight* I would want to make FF clone myself, but I cant do everything I want :( still have like 1000 more things I need to do before I can think about making it myself :(
Be warned, it's a mammoth project. The only advise I can give is, try to draft out all the gameplay mechanics first before you jump in. The worst that can happen is you burn-out half way because you lose focus on what needs to be done.

Gameplay wise, I would probably play it since I'm a fan of old-school FF as well. But before you launch, the presentation of the game interface is going to need polishing. (Forgive me for being captain obvious here)
Assuming more is gonna be added, I probably would play it. Fight sequence could definitely use more animation to it, have the units jump out at each other for melee for example. The target ring needs to have more going on too, I had to look really carefully to notice you had marine selected there, imagine how much worse it could be with multiple enemies. I realize you still got a long ways to go though, if the cursor won't cooperate, I might use special models just for selection. Attacks not taking 10 years to happen is a definite win, lol.
