Hey All, Thanks to the awesome help on these forums, I'm finally able to release my first map: One Button Mayhem.
This map is Starcraft as a one-button game. You tap "z" to spawn a zergling, and hold it down longer to create bigger units. My goal here was to create a new kind of gameplay, rather than variations on Dota / Tower Defense.
UPDATE: The map is now available on the US Server. You can find it by searching "One Button Mayhem." Alternatively you can play it from the editor - I've linked the map.
Now I'm looking for some feedback. Is it working? Is it fun? Are there any bugs that I missed?
At first I thought, "uhh more war maps..", but after watching the video I really like the Idea! It's simple and everyone gets it right away.
A Suggestion: At the start you want people to realize how the game works. This is great as it is right now. But as the game progresses add more unit bars to the players arsenal. I'm aware this ruins the 1-button-aspect, but it will make the late game less repetitive and so much more challenging.
If im just looking at the video and post alone, I would say its no fun at all.
Whats the point in spamming ONE BUTTON all the time, You obviously are going to know the one with the fastests handspeed and ticks is going to win, Thus you leave out about 70% of the people (Because only 30% of them might be fast with their hands, Others being casual games or not interested)
The numbers i call are random but i think accurate..
You certainly did not find a fun factor in it, Especially no variation. No desicion making, And possible alot of stress and tiring clicking/pressing the Z key.
If its just holding down the Z key, It would still be boring but taking away the fact that theres no handspeed required.
This is just my feedback as im probly not able to play and download. Atleast you gave not enough required information
(Region, How to get there (I know how but some might not) Or possibly even upload the map on SC2mapster itself.
Thanks! I haven't really thought of this game as "another war map," but I suppose it a lot like Nexus Wars and their ilk. I consider it something more fast-paced, like a Street Fighter type game using the Starcraft units.
Thanks for the feedback! It's on the US server, and you can get there if you search "One Button Mayhem." I'll attach the map so everyone can play, and edit the first post.
If you launch the map from the editor you can actually play with two players on the same keyboard - the left player using the "z" button and the right player using the "p".
As for your comments, I've tried balance it so that just spamming zerglings is not a winning strategy, as it's really easy to just hold the button down a bit longer and spawn a baneling. With the way that the zerglings clump together banelings tend to decimate them.
That being said the unit compositions probably needs more balancing, and I'll look into that.
A great idea. For those who says that this does not require strategy or decision making, you make decision to hold the button longer for higher tech unit or just spam zergling as fast as possible.
However the concept of a tug of war map still make it boring after a while.
my suggestion: at late game if the hp of hives is same (or almost same eg 11999 and 12000) all zerg on map die and u get new bar. u spam Z and get a point for evry click. one with most clicks spawns bruta (in 10 mins ing game) leviathan ( 20 mins in game) or kerrigan (30 mins in game) so u can see it happens evry 10 mins and 30th min its winner takes all (sience i doubt anyone will have that big of a advantage to loose) oh and hp regen to hives if they dont have it
I just fixed it myself. I can just add your name not your internetadress to the description cause otherwise it's too long. Pls PM me when you update your map.
She's now online on the eu servers.
Looks like a winner for a bit. I suggest having the bar be automatic and the user hits z at a certain point to spawn the units. This will make it so the players fingers hurt less (because you no longer have to hold z down). Another suggestion would be upgrades. The more you spawn a certain unit the better that unit becomes. Of course depending on the unit type for how many units you would need for an upgrade. Also things like type of upgrade. So perhaps a zergling gets faster movement speed, while a ultralisk receives more hp. If you plan on adding that power attacks to break up stalemates I suggest adding a quicker version of the regular bar, so that the player can try to get the most power from the atk out of it. So for instance, you stop it at 70% on the bar, then 70% of the enemies die; stop it at 30%, then 30% die. Kinda like how a cannon flash game would work.
Hey, I've been getting reports of people having difficulty connecting like Keldrif, I've uploaded a new version now, and it looks good from my side, but can someone give me confirmation that it's working?
I think it should be made more like those Golem Wars maps. Basically keep it the same but, have different races/faction options.
Z = How it is now.
X = A terran path perhaps
Y = A protoss path perhaps
etc. etc.
Not too much but just a little variation to mix things up. I'd also recommend considering having teams, 2v2, 3v3 would be very interesting. Or even a 4 way FFA.
I guess for now I won't speak of the game play (as I haven't really had a taste of that) but I get the impression its under-developed\still in beta\alpha. If thats not the case I can speak more on that subject; otherwise I reserver my comments to later versions. :P
The one thing that really ruined it was the lag. It was hard to get the unit I wanted because it wouldn't register fast enough when I let go of the key. I don't think its my fault, I don't usually lag. If you could find a way to make the controls more precise I'll try it again against a human.
IMO, the bar should automatically go up as already suggested. I was actually confused at first because I thought it did, so I thought the game was never starting. That leads to the next point: Even though it is simple, you may want to put SOME explanation on the loading screen for people who didn't come via this thread.
This isn't really a necessity, but my final request is that you add a very basic AI that reacts to what you do. It doesn't need to be good, but something to test the map out against when its in the dredges of popularity.
Anyways, good idea for a mini-game, but at the moment thats all it is: A mini-game. Good luck on the development! :)

Thanks! The tug of war is a problem I'm working on. I'm working on adding a panic / ultimate attack button to help break stalemates.
I'd love to hear anyone else's suggestions though!

Can I please publish it on EU?
@mxx1: Go
Yeah! That would be awesome! Just be sure to attribute it to me: Jacob Boyle -> jacobboyle.com

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll hopefully have some time to update it soon - ish...
Can anyone help me pls? When I first published the map on the EU Servers I got those param value things. i tried to fix it like this http://forums.sc2mapster.com/development/map-development/520-easily-adding-new-locales/ but I still get the same errors.

Pretty nice idea ;)
Can I or someone else upload to SEA?

I am getting the error "problem occurred loading the map" on Bnet US. but I can play all the others.

I tried this map on B.net. (Vs a Computer)

I can probably throw this on SEA if you want.
Haven't tried it yet, but looks awesome.
Hey All, I'm looking for someone to publish this in Taiwan if possible - I think that's separate from SEA, but I'm not sure.
In other news, here's a replay of Sen and Beta playing my map!!!
