Okay heres what I bet is going to happen, and if it does I am going to laugh my freakin ass off.
We will have an open lobby system, blizzard will make the stupid mistake of including the top 10 maps in this list, and it will become another top 10 maps list just like the current system.
Or do you think that blizzard has actually planned this out?
I think i'm really excited about
"We’re also working on a feature that will help players connect with other players and games that are near their location (connecting through the same IP). We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. Although this may not be ready in time for the release of patch 1.5, we do intend to have this available by the time Heart of the Swarm ships."
sounds like an alternative to Lan to me, ITS ABOUT TIME BLIZZARD.
Sounds like the Dota 2 feature I saw on a video (it might be in other games such as HoN or LoL, not sure) ... where it will try and connect you to the nearest game over a physical distance ... nom omomomom ... last thing I want is to play with other people in my city and get some estalkers ...
I dont understand why or how you could be against the top 10 maps being visible to players. Surely if you worked hard and made a good map, you would want players to see it, would you not? If there is a list (say, a refreshing one, like in WC3) of open lobbies, why shouldn't popular maps be on that list? It isn't like the only map on the list is going to be the popular ones. Really, they should fill instantly, causing a new lobby to open; but still only 1 will be displayed at a time; and it will cycle through just like that map with 2 total hours played, and 2 friends waiting in lobby for an opponent.
You gotta look past your hatred of popular maps; who knows, some day, you might have been the guy who made it. Giving equal opportunity for all maps is more than fair; taking opportunity away from maps that could be great, but ticked from number 9 to number 10, then lost all popularity because they could no longer be seen... well... derr?
Really, isn't top 10 even a bit much? The top 3 maps on NA have about 95% of the total hours played. Number 10 map is like 1,000 hours played; that isn't even popular, compared to the number of sc2 players.
And on the topic of regions, with Diablo 3, they are attempting to make it a world-wide, same server thing arent they? Who knows, maybe they will take that idea to wc3; and just have ladder rankings by region.

Does that mean you have creepy stuff to hide, Dogmai? =P
Glorn the problem with the top 10 being on the same list is simple, They are cascading all games under one name for each of them. So an extremely popular games name will never leave the list. the list will become nearly static.
the way the current system is; isnt there only 1 lobby open at a time, and a new lobby is created when the old one fills? that is 1 lobby. it might fill and start instantly, and create a new one, but there is still only 1 lobby. I dont see how that single lobby is going to take up the entire list? if there are 200 lobbies with players in them, wouldnt those 200 cycle through the "active games" list?
I was under the influence that the system was based on games with people waiting in the lobby; and showing those games. To get a game thrown into the mix, you simple need someone to be waiting in it.. patiently... Does that not give a blank map with a troll sitting in it, just as much chance as nexus wars to be seen?
Wheter it is only 1 lobby per game can you tell me whats the point of that showing in the active lists lobby. I would assume top10 games will still fill in instantly so what is the point of having popular games take more space from other games?!?!?
and top10 has always been a good idea. But it also needs active lobbys working besides it.
I think putting the top 10 ALONGSIDE all other lobbies, as an equal, is fair. If you want to make a separate list for the top 10; then players will go to the top 10 list to find a game. Why? they will auto start. Having a top 10 list in general, would be the opposite of what you want.
I am still failing to see how giving equal opportunity to ALL maps is in any way a bad thing. It doesn't matter how popular a map is, it has just as much chance to show up on the list as any map that has a player/players in lobby.
Not sure if anyone played WC3 years ago, before 100% of hosting was done with bots; back in the day before DoTA, and when DoTA was growing. There were yeh know, 5 dota lobbies on the list, but a hundred other games. And it stayed about that until a couple years ago where 100% of the games were hosted by bots. Even with DoTA being half of the list eventually, custom games did very well. If dota was only ever allowed 1 spot on the custom games list, it would have been devastating to dota, and extremely beneficial to all other custom games. Essentially, that is what we are being given. Compared to what we have in place right now, I would kiss blizzards ass (and I am not usually a supporter) to get it released sooner.
So that name isnt going to move on that list until all the lobbys for it close, Therefore it will move and the 10 ten popularity system will stay on top and be nearly static... again.. Page 2 might be decent, but other then that it would ruin it.
could that problem be avoided if players could no longer make a private game, and then turn it into a public game? Then there would never be more than a single lobby for a map. I honestly have no idea how often people start private games and make them public, but I really don't feel as though it is THAT frequent.
In the above situation, then every time a game fills, the lobby and close and reopen instantly; but it would still be a new lobby; refreshing its place on the list, right?
Also, how exactly is this list sorted? Lobbies that have been open the longest? Lobbies with the most players waiting in them? does it simply cycle through all open lobbies? In what manner are the lobbies organized?
I dunno what we are betting... im broke lol

See, Because you posted I now see a problem with the whole idea lol,
What about Australian players they are not region locked, could that create problems?
Region locks... another crap idea. Couldnt the system make an AUS eu and an Aus na try to connect to each other?
But what I think they mean. though im usually wrong about stuff like this.
They are trying to find a way for tounaments and collage dorms to connect multiple players through the same IP, Lag free.

NOT ON SAME LIST.
learn the difference between having 2 lists that show different stuff. Or 2 lists that show same stuff.
Does that mean you have creepy stuff to hide, Dogmai? =P
