Excellent, thank you. I've been looking for that answer all over the place, even saw people claiming it is impossible.
That's all the motivation I needed to actually start learning to use the editor.
I am not sure how the interface will handle it or if the standard melee triggers will function correctly. However it is possible to convert existing races into other races and should be possible to add in other races even if selection must be done in game.
Workaround:
1. add race data
2. hide race selection in bnet lobby, make every player terran/zerg/protoss
3. add a new player attributes: one for each race + random
4. use player attributes to determine the race and create that race's starting units via a triggers. There is an action that properly places the starting units of a specified race at a specified point.
5. ignore the fact that you can't have different UI, different alert sounds, etc, anymore
This is about creating a fourth race. What of changing the existing ones? How far can one go? Is there anything that can not be changed for certain in any way?
My question is: is it possible to create a total conversion mod? For example, can you replace the existing races with something else?
Sure you can. You can replace the current races, you could even add a 4th or 5th race.

Ok-ish. Command card button race tint, cargo tint, group selection and Help menu's tech tree can't be altered. The rest seems to be editable.
Not without hacky workarounds.

Anything can be changed but consider removing the melee multiplayer mod.
