I have been watching now like 5 or more tutorials how to create new unit, and i have been doing exactly step by step what they said and everything was ok but thje result... on their last step they got complete, working unit and im getting white ball, black ball or nothin.
The only way i could create a new unit was by "Add object" for unit, actor and model... but then it lacked sounds and portrait animation. So how do i duplicate the unit without getting white ball?
Im duplicating unit with actors and models selected to copy, then im goign to actor and changing the value of unitname token, then going to "art" tab and changign all models to "marine copy" and still have white ball or nothing appears in the terrain editor when im trying to place th eunit on the map.
DO you know some tutorials that ARE correct, showing ALL stuff that HAVE to be done to duplicate working unit without white ball?
p.s.
Im getting extremale frustrated with their comments on "how easy it is" while their tutorials are nto complete. Everything is easy when you already know how it works.
The unit creation process (aka data editor) is extremely flexible, but not "easy"... modifying a speicific part of a unit is easy as long as you know exactly what you want to modify... creating something from scratch is something I have not seen a tutorial on... I've thought about digging deeper into the data editor and posting a tree-like diagram of how all the pieces fit together, but I'm a programmer at heart, and am still working on the Scripting editor. It would be nice if someone familiar with the data editor would post a huge diagram of each of the components, but that would be a large project... maybe we can get a few people interested and have a "Mapping the Galaxy" group working on it.
Ok my first trouble Shoot :P
if you've got all 3 , Unit, Actor, and model all done
try going into the Actor section select it and go into the Art Section and make sure all the drop down boxes (model, Model (build), Model (editor), Model (placement and model portrait) are all selected to the correct model name and the Token (very top of screen) is pointed at the Correct unit, i was getting the same white orb problem but this corrected it.
thansk for relpies. I just got it working... The wierd thing is that in Actor tab i had to change all models to "Marine" instead of "Marine copy". So why copying the model if its not used for actor?
ok found out that to make working copy of a unit all you have to do is select "duplicate" on the unit and in the new window only select the main tickbox and the actors tickboxes... and done. SO why making all these tutorials so damn long and looking so confusing?
Some of these tutorials are outdated (esp since the majority of them came about around the first weeks of the Beta editor being released), people have discovered newer and more efficient ways to do things since. Or perhaps not everyone actually knows how to teach? But its good that you found what works for you, which is btw the easiest way to do it.
It's because of the models in the actors not following through.
The unit you want to copy
Find it in actors, dulplicate DO NOT CHECK MODELS OR SOUNDS or UPGRADES but make sure you check unit so when you switch backt o units tab, youl have "unit copy" which you can rename and easily place anywhere
Duplicate, Check the box for "Actors" "Effects" and "Weapons"
I do this because I usually modify things like the damage or weapons to differentiate my "boss" units from their standard counterparts. Be sure to rename the unit and weapons accordingly.
damn... my way works perfectly to th moment when you test the unit's attack ability :) It have no effect and no sound. Suterusu's way is flawless so far.
Anyway guys, do you have any idea how to fix the custom units i have made my way (duplicating unit and checking only actors, withotu effects), so they can have the attack effects without remaking all of them?
Go to the original unit. Right click each effect and click "explain link". This will tell you /how/ the effect is being associated with the unit to begin with. You'll have to work backwards from there. Generally effects come from abilities or things such as weapons.
Edit: Credit to this guide which was my original source for duplicating units when I first started.
I just find it lacking in this editor, that i cannot i.e. navigate to my unit copy, and there from right click "add actor" etc. Or well... maybe i still dont know how to do such thing :P
No, the editor does not work like that unfortunately. Actors associate actions to units, therefore the unit has the actor because they actor calls the unit in its actions. This method is however more modular and allows for finer granularity in mapping/modding.

Can you post your map so that I can take a look as see what went wrong?
