Consider this thread to be an open casting call for a new race/faction for Starcraft II. As it stands, the projects goal is to make a standalone army playable amongst the ranks of the Terrans, Protoss, and Zerg. Distributed in the Custom Maps section, selectable in the lobby, just like the other races would be.
The Race
The more intricate details will be kept amongst team for the time being. That said, a very brief, concise synopsis is to follow:
The Nemoid are a race of Space Pirates hailing from outside the Koprulu Sector. After several planets vanish in the wake of their raids, they arrive in the familiar Koprulu sector, their raids and aggressive nature put them at odds with the local races.
Currently estimated to be 14 units and 13 Structures.
Required Members
All across the board. I want this to be a community inclusive experience drawing from a vast array of talent. :)
But... specifically I suppose;
Modelling, Texturing, Data, etc.
About Myself
With... about 1 post under my belt I feel it's best to describe my background a bit. I'm a Game Design student with the University of Saskatchewan, and will be attending the Vancouver Film School's Game Design program next year. I've dabbled in several different game design formats including the Source Developers Kit.

this certainly has the potential to end up somewhere I assume it will start out as a proof of concept then worry about all the pretty art visuals. I will certanly give some thought into this but wont be able to join team will attempt some ideas though.
Sounds cool. For now, I would recommend just building the race without custom models (or without all customs). People will be more inclined to help out with model creation once they see you have done a good chunk of the race's units. I'm not sure of how experienced with the editor you are but if you are interested, I have a series of introductory tutorials in my signature. I know you don't want to give too much away but I'm a bit curious to how the race will play- fast and large amounts of cheap units like zerg, protoss style 'small but strong' units or an in-between the terran? Mhm, one of the very interesting challenges in designing this race is to try and make it seem not too much like one particular army. Blizzard has done such a great job in making these armies seem like totally different ends of the spectrum, it becomes a challenge to make it totally unique. It's still very fun though!

just to start throwing out ideas may be a building could be a sort of cliff ladder that allowed lighter units to climb up/down the cliff but would be easily destructible and of course this race would have its own reliable pirate with sword or gun start off unit ;p building could be a bar they come from i dono (i know they are space pirates but gotta have some melee fellaz lol) thats all i have just wanted to see if i spark any other ideas (cliff ladder idea was only real seriously thought out idea)
There was one idea I had that was called the Kinetic Launcher. It's a small 'building,' you set the point where a marker shows up [to warn of a possible base insertion], pop some troops in and it fires them through the sky over cliffs and into the base. This, combined with an armored APC-like walker, makes up for the fact they won't have an aerial transport. :)
Why not give them a portable base style? Like a huge walker as their base where you build on that and eventually late game you would have say 3 or 4 of these walkers, one mainly producing units, another with the tech trees and the other two as defenses mainly backing up your army. Of course you would have to set down by minerals and gas to mine and that would be what would keep them from going after other players from the start, they cost a lot but have high health, not necessarily strong but the buildings are durable and units are average.
Just a thought, not sure how to fit that in with space pirates.
<3 the custom race... the function is there in the galaxy editor, but did you managed to publish it?????
i say this because building custom races is my only goal in sc2... (well, of course add to it the scenarios and maps that would complement such an addition).
i'm definitely not an in depth galaxy drone (to say the least), but i tried getting my custom race approved by bnet ... and i got the finger trying! i asked around and someone here was nice enough to agree that it was a no no for now (sorry must look up who, will edit it in)).
Apparently the function is not yet allowed by blizz, in a "melee standard publish way" at least. Just saying...
This might sound abit classic but why don't give them "Grounded" Ships as Building, so they can lift/unleash the buildings from the ground like Terran does?.. They are pirates, so they need flexibility to transports their base from one planet to another.

I got an Weird picture in my head of a Parrot, But i would say some kind of big animal, with some electronic gear on them?
Tier System?
How is it going to be with the Tier update system? Is it going to be like Zerg? That they need to build "this" and then upgrate their Main building? Or is it going to be like Terran and Protoss? Build "This" so you can get "this"?
It's from the old alien movies and from Universe at War where there are two main races fighting on earth. One is aliens who are trying to kill the evil ones, these guys are like protoss there buildings need to be close to a power line thing. The other ones use a giant walker which looks amazing. Sadly, no one really likes it but the race ideas they had were cool. The evil aliens weren't zerg like though.
Haha, some nice ideas so far in here. I will say what I've come up in regards to your ideas.
Base Buildings
Grounded ships is actually quite similar to what I was thinking. However, I don't want to take the liftoff ability from the terrans. The worker builds something by selecting the drop zone and waving a beacon to a colony ship implied to be in orbit. The ship then detaches the particular structure and it soars down to the surface. The worker CAN survive if the player moves him when its done 'building', but otherwise will get crushed when the piece lands, as well as any other unit in the target area.
That said, the Capital [their command center style place] is actually a landed ship with struts attached. After they build a certain building, the Capital can get a slight upgrade, and it lifts off to become a Capital Ship. However, once it does so, the base can no longer make units. The shell it leaves behind can receive minerals only.
Same goes for the troop frigate, their gateway equivalent. It becomes a more standard air vessel, while the Capital is massively powerful.

Their technology is stolen from other races, cobbled together ships. Theres also one building called the Biotech Lab which makes units based around wild animals they've found on raids, and enfused them with bio-mechanical elements to make them useful. Like the Saurex which is much like raptor cavalry, and the Draco, which is just totally awesome but I'll keep a secret for now..

Alright here's the plan...
Basically what I'm going to try and do is get it on a well balanced official blizzard melee map. And just pop it into Custom games like any other custom map. If we can, it'd be great to have a map selection feature too, but I'm not sure how that would work.

Okay, I may have understood it wrong, but you are giving them a chance to all in with their building? or?
Basically how I was thinking it would work, is after they've built the Drydock, then Admiralty Board, they can upgrade the Capital and it becomes a ship. Same goes for Troop Frigate but to a weaker degree. So in a sense, later in the game, yeah.
I did some thinking and in retrospect, it might be more beneficial to have other sets of eyes looking over the army list rather than rely on one.

In this case, they will not respond to commands but will defend themselves.

Capitals may upgrade into Capital Ships later in the game. These constitute the pride of the Nemoid pirate fleet. The Troop Frigate may also become Frigates, and may train up to four Nemoid Gunners.
==== The Blitz ====
Nemoid troops can attack from unexpected angles, while they lack an air transport vessel, they can move surprisingly well. The impenetrable Trilob may deflect high impact shots, Kinetic Launchers fire troops across the battlefield, and the terrifying Draco can land for a brief period to wreak havoc on ground troops.
==== Piracy ====
Lophin workers may engage the plunder ability to begin tearing down a red-state enemy structure. The building mineral and gas cost is halved and given to the Nemoid player. This is in lou of a mineral gathering ability like Mules, Crono boost, or mass drones. Seems like it might not be as useful though?

Lophin- Worker unit, calls down
Buccaneer- Standard Unit. Has a harpoon gun that can be upgraded to do more damage to biological.
Zelgauss-Mid-tier infantry unit. Wields a sort of Gatling gun weapon, takes a few moments to warm up. High armor.
Aeronaught- Infantry unit that counts as flying. Fast unit, but actually can't jump cliffs. Suicide-dives upon death.
Saurex- Bio-tech unit, nemoid raptor cavalry. These are used by the Nemoid to run down civilians and wreak havoc.
Draco- High tier unit. Flying AA melee attacker. Special ability is to impact land, where it slams down and can melee units for a short time before having to fly again.
Frigate- Has four turrets operated by gunners that can attack seperate targets.
Capital Ship-
Paymaster- Ground supply unit. Should be hidden in a treasury.
Trilob- Carries units across the battlefield, can climb up and down cliffs. Ground based transport.
Druid- Religious/Morale officer. Wields a pair of hooks. Has a series of abilities which can augment nearby troops. Such as marking a specific target that will take additional damage.
So, theres the basic look at units. I'm sure there's problems. But, we can work through it. :)
EDIT- Oh absolutely, balance is going to be a big issue later down the line.
was thinking may b you could have some sort of ground transport if they don,t have air transport and you could possibly not steal the liftoff ability by making the buildings able to become mobile but not be able to create units while mobile. was also thinking you could make this race unique by having the building being able to be "re-purposed" like a building that can create light units with the right other buildings can re-purpose itself or change into a building that creates air units or those animal things you mentioned and can change in between the different unit creating buildings, could also do same with defenses that can change in between anti air and anti ground (not instantaneously of course that could turn OP ;p). Dont know if that would work (i think so) but just trying to think of a system separate from all the other races possibly make a strong point of this race to be adaptable to the current situation. oh and these changes or re purposes would of course be able to do this with the right upgrades or buildings on the map. and cant w8 to c Draco =)

The cliff ladder would be cool but probably be really hard if not impossible to program.
