Soooo. I've been curious about the map editor ever since SC2 came out, and I've finally set up the time, patience, and determination to learn it. My goal is to create my own unique map. I'm not expecting to make something amazing, revolutionary, or popular haha... Just something fun to play~
My map is going to be an RPG, and I've just completed most of the Terrain. I've been doing tutorials for the past few days, making a bunch of little test maps to try to figure out some basics. The Data editor and triggers seem very complicated. I'm wondering, for those of you who have created successful maps, how long did it take you to learn the Editor? And how long did it take you to create your map? I realize many people came from the Warcraft scene. I myself have no previous experience with the Warcraft or Starcraft editors.
Anyway.... I am also a modeler in real life. I think it will be VERY fun to create some custom models and textures once I figure out how to use this Editor :P I'm also a female. Umm, guess that's it!
Be on the lookout for noob questions in the near future D:
Welcome to sc2mapster! Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions or need anything :)
I mapped a little bit back in Warcraft, but not too much. It's definitely not a problem if you haven't used the Wc3 editor. You'll get the hang of triggers and data quickly, the basic bits are fairly well-explained in tutorials. I started with the editor back in the sc2 beta (so that's about 2 years ago) and I've created some fairly extensive maps. That said, you'll get the hang on the basics much faster than that :)
We're definitely in need of modelers for sc2, so I'm sure you'll be well-liked ;)

mapping is largely a trial by fire situation. You will find that you want to do something but your not quite sure how to get to the result your looking for. As you make several attempts to complete your task you will slowly learn what is and isnt possible.
I find that every time I go about trying to make something new, I find new ways of doing things. There are always more aspects of the editor to learn.
This community is in serious need of modelers.
I love to help debug and design triggers so if you need help in that area don't be afraid to ask.
I've played a LOT of custom maps in SC2 , and I've always kinda wondered why you don't see more custom models. I think it's exciting that we have the ability to create this! I guess the simple lack of modelers in the community explains it.
Welcome to mapster. I started back in the old days of SC1 but never released anything to the public until SC2 came out. I usualy don't take long to release a map as I take the WIP approach to get feedback from players.
And modellers are really needed around here, so if you ever release a custom model be ready for endless requests ;-)
Getting requests would be a great opportunity for practice! finding time for it all is the problem. Honestly it will probably take me quite a while to get through tutorials and learn the Galaxy Editor, because I tend to be busy with college work and that's obviously my priority. Perhaps I will have something finished for HOTS! Slow and steady ^_^;
Oh! So you are the person who made Starcraft Expanded? I love that game, great work. I speak Brazilian Portuguese btw *noticed your location*
Welcome to sc2mapster, is a great resource when you hit a brick wall with what you are trying to do. Making an RPG, can't say anything bad about that as that is what I've been working on the past 6 months or so. Just take it one step at a time is all I suggest, there is a ton involved with making an RPG, extremely easy to get burnt out. Think long before deciding on having an inventory by the way, as it will take you far longer to keep up :)

This is my amazingly late hello! Also, i seem to now notice that most new mappers want to make an RPG.
