Something like this is being planned for the UK too.
I think it's rediculous. Musicians and filmstars/makers aren't in need of surplus income. Musicians generate their capitol via holding festivals and gigs, not through CD sales. Likewise, the film industry isn't exactly strapped for cash, so what's the effective outcome here? You take money from people to give to people who are already millionaires, if not multimillionaires.
I guess when you have the money for lawyers in our very confusing legal systems, it's easier to just plow through problems than to critically think and adapt as well as outplay the piracy.
If I could quickly go online, pay a couple dollars for any movie I wanted and get an AVI file downloaded (with no ads and no limits on the file), then I would. Unfortunately pirated movies provide all of that convenience except you don't/can't pay. I would gladly pay if the system existed (worldwide).
If they're going to pass bills like this then they should atleast get people young enough to understand exactly what they're playing with. I'll bet the congress or whomever is in charge of these things doesn't have much of a clue how much this would affect our generation if they are actually thinking of passing this.
The world changed too much during the last decade while the government stay the same. Time for some catastrophic events that reset it. (not 2012 of course)
There's been a huge gap between rulers and ruled for ages tbh. The gap's closer in modern days, but still there. Not that it matters, it's still the lucky and the bright who ultimately dictate our future. It's just such a shame that they are often held down or repressed by a world that doesn't understand them and hardly ever get a good chance to really get their ideas out.
I don't know if you are from NA or not, but here is a news flash. You know that movie star guy? Can't remember his name, but who cares. Anyways so one canidate for the election was saying how her home town was so awesome cuz he was born there. Turns out it was the serial killer/mass child rapist with the same name who had lived there. It is in my opinion, looking at Sarah Plain and I don't even care anymore, that a 5 year old could run the government better than these guys can. Barrack Obama is by far the best option. I would even go as far as saying that he is a REALLY good president, but apparently no one agrees with me.
Want to know my opinion? John Stewart for president!
EDIT: Haha my editing check thing corrected "Palin" to "Plain". That makes me so happy, I am going to leave it that way.
There are certainly some less than intelligent politicians these days.
I wasn't at all talking about politicians =P. I'm talking about people who are inventing things and rethinking society. Brilliant minds like Einstein in his time. We have politics so the people feel like they have some degree of influence as to what's happening, but all the *real* changes in history have always come through brilliant inventors pushing the world forward. Hence why I included "the lucky" in the sentence - some of these inventions are stumbled upon by pure accident.
The Bill won't pass as is. Once these major firms catch wind that they are going to loose a cut, they will threaten to withdrawal any campaign contributions they've made. Additionally, they could run a PR campaign saying something along the lines of, "we have a debt crisis, an economic crisis, and this is what you're talking about?" Some politician looking to rally his base will leap all over it, and we can assume that there will be at least several legal/constitutional challenges to this. This will probably get fishholed.
Frankly, by the time this bill comes around, anyways, it will probably be shoved aside. We're already in the midst of the next tech bubble, (Facebook, Linkdin are all overvalued by a ridiculous amount) and as soon as the Fed ratchets up the interest rates, which they'll need to do soon, we can expect a big hit to GDP, more government bailouts, rising prices of all other goods, and a rise in unemployment.
As for Obama, if you hated Bush, you should also hate Obama. Bailouts, stimulus packages, growth in G, destruction of the U.S. dollar, war, expansion of healthcare; they both did these things, the packaging was the only difference. Now we are doing all we can to shove Greek debt out of the IMF (ever wonder why Germany has recently been turning their backs away from us?), devaluing out debt via expansion of currency (ever wonder why there is so much tension between our government and that of China?), and systematically pissing everyone else in the world off by waging unjust and aggressive wars.
There was no change in 2008, just more of the same. You want something to actually change? Vote for someone who wants sound money.
Yes of course, not what I meant. When he was elected, tons of people thought he was amazing. When he didn't fix every single problem in every single department immediately, people said "this guy sucks!" and tried to find everything wrong about him they can. This is, of course, referring to the republicans who cannot accept that democrats can actually know what they are doing sometimes. Unfortunately for US (no pun intended), a large percentage of the United States are Hill Billys that don't understand anything about anything. If you disagree, drive through Arkansas or Mississippi for a while, and you will see what I am talking about. Check out parts of Iowa too. Texas, Florida, must I go on? Step a foot out of resort towns and you will see what I am talking about.
Also we need to keep something in mind about this bill. The distribution of SC2 and other games content is regulated by the company that makes them, not the government. Unless of course they are selling games to drug dealers and what-not, they can do what they want. That means that they can allow for their game to be put online if they so choose and, knowing Blizzard, they would continue to allow footage of gameplay online if the bill is passed.

Thank you for a realists look at the US Gov. There is no good choice and bad choice for Prez anymore. There is not choice. Have you ever seen the magic trick where a magician tells you to pick a number, then a letter associated with the number, then asks you a bunch of other questions to get you to think of specific answers. At the end of the trick he names the animal, color, place etc. you were thinking of exactly. This is the same thing that voting for president is. It's a trick designed to make you think you have a choice, but in the end, there really is only 1 answer. I mean come on...who actually thought McCain had a chance? The worst part is, when the population actually doesn't go with the plan, they just force it through anyway. *cough* Bush vs. Gore
Alternatively, all politicians are the same because you have to be. You have to be generic and fake enough to get the majority of the population to vote for you. There are not enough people that think exactly the same as you that would agree with you enough to vote for you if you actually spoke your mind.
The rest of the world is rooting for Obama. We generally agree with TacoManStan: we like Obama (best of the worst?). Well atm for some reason Americans are not allowed to like him... until he pulls some magical Clintonesque stuff I guess.
I wish the best for the US, as we are pretty dependent on them up over the border here.
Perhaps a bigger problem is that there is nothing to like on the other party as they have swung extremely to the right.

lol. . . this is why America fails. .

Alas, this is 100% correct...

I don't think many of you really understand the government anymore than you claim it doesn't understand you.
Oh, so the government actually does think about what it's doing before it decides to do it? It doesn't just cave to corporate pressure?
Wait. . .

Doth I smell a Ron Paul supporter?
Bad that US have to go bankrupt to get Ron Paul elected. And its also sad that by far Ron Paul is the best choice that Americans can have.
Anyway even if Bill S.978 doesnt passes cause corporate interests, people in US can expect this to happen in the close future:
