I was curious about the average age of the modding community, and as I couldn't find such a thread, I decided to create one.
Please use the poll, and throw a comment if you feel like sharing your timeline as a modder. I'd like to know how old you all are now, and when you took modding to a higher level than Line Rider and LEGO.
21. As for my modding timeline, I feel like I really 'started' modding in WarCraft 3, when I really got working. Before that I did do some simple projects for StarCraft and WarCraft 2, though.
I have been modding probably since high school but I didn't really release anything.
Editors I have messed with:
Warcraft 2 Editor(just playing with the terrain editor)
Hammer(Only a basic map for half life 1)
SC:BW StarEdit(some basic triggering)
Irrlicht(Only for a class project)
WC3 World Editor(Jass, Triggering, MPQ editing, mdx, I wanted to make a converter from dotxsi to mdx with *java but got hung up on fcurve's vs Hermite splines)
Dawn of War Editor and SCAR coding(it's basically just LUA)
19, wont be put in the 16 year old group... lol bunch of twats.
I really wouldn't say that. I am not even 16 yet, and I have plenty (at least a bit) of matureness, and I do program, terrain and model just as good (possibly better) than the average on SC2Mapster. Age does not matter when it comes to hobbies and interests, IMO.
I got started with the wc3 editor in the age of 10, moved over to the Hammer editor in the age of 12, moved back to the wc3 editor in the age of 13, and got started with the sc2 editor in the age of 14. And now, being 15 years old, I still mod for sc2.
Just turned 26 earlier this year. Started modding all the way back in SC1, when I was 13 (I just realized have 14 years of programming experience :D). Then moved to War3 when it came out, and now SC2.
I would say I started taking things to a higher level a few years before SC2 was released, on the War3 engine. But I ran into a lot of engine limitations that stopped me from realizing many of my ideas. But now with the power of Galaxy, I actually feel much of it is very very possible.
I started with terrain last time, but moved more towards triggering/JASS during war 3. Tried learning JASS a few times before I finally understood it's structure. I'd say my true revelation came only a few years back, the point at which I finally understood programming structure, allowing me to learn JASS any many other languages. Over the years I've only ever released 1 map, a TD I called Spyralz TD if i recall right. I thought I was good back then but when I look at the map now, it horrifies me how bad it sucks lol.
Starting up a-bit on game design at the moment as well in the sidelines, it's tough stuff. A lot of critical thinking requred @_@
Apart from modding, other languages I've learned/attempted to learn are:
Java/SQL
C (Well, it is the same language as Galaxy)
C
Python (Starting soon, job requires it)
Actionscript 3.0
Few other languages I don't really find useful.
Other modding tools I've tried:
Red alert 2 map maker (Unofficial)
Half life mapmaking (Couldn't figure out)
Serious sam 3 engine map making, (Couldn't figure out)

I dare you to find someone who says they're not more mature then people their own age on the internet. But other than that i totally agree people should being ageists. I turned 16 back in december.
When I was in my teen ages, I too thought I was more mature than most of the others, but when I look back now... Heh, I was nowhere near mature. You all would probably understand this feeling 10 years down the road.

Oh, and I started Editing at the age of around 4 with Warcraft 2 ToD, then BtDP, then BNE lol.(All my maps where random gold mines and stuff for the most part until i was around 7 or 8 LOL
Under 16, Sadly, people who are older than me, act like (literally) 4 year olds... Playing with their food, making stupid hand motions of finger people exploding... So yeah, a lot more mature than them, at least!

I am more mature than other people my age on the internet, until I start losing in League of Legends.
That comment made me laugh :D
@ScorpSCII: Go 23.
Been modding since...I think Age of Empires 1?. The basic started out there, i think.
Indeed.
@FuzzYD: Go
I like Scorp, am also not yet 16. While I admit that I'm not the most mature person, school has taught me that I'm still miles ahead of average...

Im probably less mature than when i was younger, but what the hell.

I remember playing that, I heard there is a 3rd one now, bout the revolution or something?
I'm 17... Started modding at 16, lol. Started with simple texture replacement in Halo Combat Evolved PC. Then I moved on to MechWarrior 3.

Don't we have any 30+ in here? Or do they pretend to be younger?
Or is it simply the age where you either stop modding, or start programming?
