Hello. Maybe the wrong place to ask, but it's worth a try. I was trying to make a short (about 4 min) video introduction to my map (Poker Defense - Full Deck) when it hit me: I know absolutely nothing about recording, editing or optimizing movies. Like... absolutely nothing what so ever.
Which brings me to my point; is there anyone out there who could help me gather and optimize 4 min worth of footage (I would like a file that would look good on YouTube), or even have a good guide on how to do it? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Download Virtualdub and DivX codec. Also, get fraps if you havn't already. Then record with fraps, edit with virtualdub and then compress + export with the DivX codec.
You could also use Xfire, but the size for Xfire vids are ridiculous O_o
Hm... what? I downloaded VirtualDub and opened the file i recorded in Fraps. But I can't find any options for compressing and exporting to DivX. I only find "Save as AVI...". I use CCCP for all my video playback needs, so I got the DivX codec, but do I need some kind of plugin for VirtualDub? I'm really lost... :(
The generic windows movie maker is actually okay for getting into video editing, its really simple which is both good and bad. Bonus is it also features a specific 'upload to youtube' option. Once you've mastered that and gotten bored of it look for some real video editing software and with those you can accomplish some great work.

You're missing the point. What he wants is a good quality compressor that converts the humongous *.AVI files into a MPEG format which do not hamper video quality nor won't try to backstab you by resizing the width of the video.
No need to suggest something that is out of the question.
Yes, exactly. I'm not really going to edit the video either way. I'll just add some subtitles on YouTube and that should be enough for now. I just really need some tutorial / help / program or something of the like to get my video from my 3Gb Fraps file up onto YouTube with good enough quality to make out what's happening.
Well all I'm saying is a very quick and easy way to stuff a 3gb fraps video onto youtube is run it through movie maker. Its already present, very easy to use (drag fraps output file(s) into it, click save as, profit) and far as I have seen there is very little in the way of lost quality. Sure the output is .wmv files if you export directly to file but even then the quality is still present and the codec does a decent job of cutting down file size, again without having to deal with the sometimes arcane methods of virtualdub. Far as I can see there is nothing out of the question about that suggestion at all, it just works and that's why I mentioned it.
I use the Ulead video editor myself but yah its for more editing intensive kinds of operations and beats the pants off of virtualdub for that sort of functionality.
Good stuff! If I could make a suggestion, since youtube plays wide screen regardless you may as well upload it as a 720p or even 1080p, sure the file you're uploading is bigger but the pay off is higher too for those that want to up the resolution of the playback. This is again not the best compression/uploading method but its definitely the easiest.
Well yeah, that would be nice. But Movie Maker doesn't let me choose resolution. There's just a bunch of predetermined choices in a list. From "high quality" 720x576 down to yesteryear 160x120. I just picked what seemed to give the best quality and that's what I got out of it. :(
Hrmph that's odd, the version of it I've got goes by the TV resolutions of 480p - 1080p, I'm using win7 though might make a difference, perhaps visit the MS site and see if there's an update if its worthwhile to you. So yah it got the job done but if you're ever craving better solutions there are for sure better ones like virtualdub or real 3rd party editing suites such as my preferred Ulead.
I use fraps, megui, and a program called avisynth batch scripter. It's a bit more in-depth and slightly more complicated process, especially for someone who isn't familiar with video editing. I made a video editing tutorial series on this but it expects you to at least know something about formats.
In which case I recommend to use Sony Vegas for your editing/encoding and the x264/AC-3 or AAC codecs for encoding.
Converting into x264 will yield you the best size/quality ratio, but you'll probably have to intstall codecs first.
Using VirtualDub is pretty much the easiest way:
1) You open your .avi in VDub.
2) Make sure that Video -> Full Processing Mode is selected.
3) Click on Video -> Compression
4) Select ffdshow and click Configure.
5) Set the Encoder to MPEG-4 (or H264 if you have that) and hit OK twice.
6) Make sure that Audio -> Full Processing Mode is selected.
7) Click on Audio -> Compression
8.) Select any compression on the left side that makes something show up on the right side.
9) Click on the entry on the right side and hit OK.
10) Click on File -> Save as AVI
11) Eat a cookie.
If you do not have the option ffdshow then you can get it from here: http://ffdshow.en.softonic.com/
It's a pack of video and audio codecs, very useful. Usually it's already installed (comes with VDub?).

This method works perfectly. OP try this if you want great quality.

Thanks, I somehow got something decent out of Movie Maker (). It'll have to do for now. :p
