For some time now, I've always had rushing idea's for Games. All the time, like a unique idea that i can work off, i write some of them down. I've even had ideas for a fully fledged game... I loved it. I sometimes think of it as some form of a "gift"... But right now, when i try to goto sleep, i get more ideas, and it stops me from trying to sleep.. it is annoying sometimes, especially when i have work in the morning..
I don't know, but I suffer from the same. I even wake up at night thinking about new ideas, forgetting that I actually should be trying to fall asleep again.
It typically happens when I run into a dilemma on what the best way is to implement/present an idea. I find what helps me snap out of it is to either over-map and burn myself out, or pick up a good novel and read a chapter or two to distract yourself from the barrage of ideas.
I've heard that your brain becomes more creative while you're laying down. That, combined with the absence of other distracting thoughts, turns that sleepy time period into a well of magnificent ideas. I have had this problem, and I have found that trying to fight it and forget the ideas that i'm thinking about takes a while. What I do is I get out of bed, turn on my computer, and type out all of my ideas into a google doc. It doesn't matter how fleshed out your typed descriptions are, just get everything in your head written down. After that I can usually fall asleep fairly easily.
Mapping more wont help you, Quit thinking, Watch some cartoons or something like that. Happens to me all the time, Watch about 40 minutes of Spongebob or Ed edd and eddy and your good to sleep lol.
Also when you work on something, Work on it until you feel like you have done enough.

Does that mean you will come up with better game concepts if you lie awake at night, than if you were sitting in front of your computer?
If so, I'm gonna stay awake all night the next couple of weeks, and get some crazy, innovative game idea which will make me rich and have loads of minions in my own AAA-title company.
Happens to me as well, lol. Its not just game ideas though (It hardly ever is), but as I've mentioned a few times, I like to write, so there's all sorts of stories going around my head. I find it funny that I sometimes try to imagine how I would write it (i.e. I actually think exactly how it's written. I see the scene in my head, and then describe it in words just as if I were writing it), end up digressing a lot and somehow end up in another story of mine xD

I had the luck that for a while I read ebooks before going to bed, so my parents let me take a laptop to my room overnight. Even though I now have physical books to read again, I keep the laptop for "listening to music" and "occasionally reading an ebook" or something else that I dont have physically, by which I mean I listen to music, read an actual book for some time, and then switch to writing stories or posting before going to sleep (Like right now) I'm not sure whether writing helps me to fall asleep, but I think I can say with fair certainty that my mind is a bit less active than before I started writing (Writing in general, not just writing before bed) I also like the feeling of actually having my ideas/stories written down so that someday someone may end up reading them. (Btw, if anyone is interested in reading a comedy in a similar style of Terry Pratchett, chuck me a PM. A friend of mine (A particulary honest one when it comes to writing and pointing out flaws, sort of like Eiviyn) will vouch for it to be fucking hilarious)

I wouldn't say "Better", but... Uh... More? Faster? When you're lying down and trying to sleep (at least in my case), your mind doesn't have anything else to focus on and you just start having ideas. You could have the same ones during the day, but the difference is that during the day you are always focusing on something. So the ideas aren't necessarily better, but I'm pretty sure the laws of probability will agree that More idea = Higher likeliness of a good one.
If you want good ideas, read books and/or listen to music. I usually get some ideas from books I read or music I listen to (I used to imagine a sort of movie scene for a story to which the currently playing music would fit.), but if you are too focused when reading books, I don't think you would get many ideas :p (I can sometimes read a whole page before I realize I have no idea what I just read because I was thinking of something else.)
One of my strategies for this.... just work on said idea until it works, or at least outline it on some paper for later. I don't sleep too well, that said, lol.

So what is this sort of thing called?

Restlesness, I think. Try and find an outlet for your ideas. Map more, map more intensively, whatever floats your boat.
Same problem here =_= Not sure if there is a name to describe this? Its not insomnia is it?
