I've been having random disappearances of files/folders that are on my desktop. first time i noticed it was when i opened my uniwork folder and all except one timetable.jpg that i had that wasnt in a subfolder was left in there.
next time i noticed was when my songs in my song folder went missing.
now i notice again and its a folder i was storing scmaps that i thought were useful sources now gone missing.
ps: i didnt recycle bin them >.< im not that stupid. haha
can't seem to think of what it could be causing this...though i didnt have any av protection earlier i grabbed a av and scanned and couldnt really find anything that was bad. i got spybot search and destroy aswell because i know its good.
anyone else had a similar problem to find fix >.< if no answer ima reformat! just cos i like reformatting :P
...ps: they aren't on com anywhere i searched each time i noticed i was missing something...not sure if all occurences happened same time or happened at 3 differ occasions cos i didnt really bother searching for other missing files/folders at the first/second occurence >.<
Pretty sure you're only going to get the obvious responces; virus or malicious friend.
Disconnect your computer and password your PC to see if it helps. If it's a virus then there's no real way to get rid of it unless it's a really shoddy virus. Reformatting might work but the back door opened by the virus will always be there. It's likely a hijack type where the owner is just being a malicious prick and deleting your work. I doubt this is the case though, as anyone with the expertise to pull this off would be more interested in people's details rather than petty vandalism.
Don't try getting work off your PC using a pen drive, if it's a virus, it will infect that too. Instead upload your file to a storage website and scan it for viruses (using a good virus scanner, like anti-malware bytes) before downloading.
Take the above advice with a pinch of salt. Just repeating how I dealt with a similar problem. I have no real computer experience.
You know I've had this problem my self in the past. I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's a virus or the like. Especially if you're running scans and nothing big is popping up. You might of not noticed you did it or some one else might've not noticed that's what they were doing, but I've had that stupid "Desktop Cleanup" or whatever pop up and accidently ok it. What the annoying program does if you don't know is decides for you what programs on the desktop are unimportant/outdated and just taking up space you could be using for "important" stuff and deletes them.
The only reason I remember doing this is I'm pretty sure it was my old sc1 maps/files it deleted. This was like 4 years ago.
I agree with Red, I don't think it's a virus... People see viruses anytime something does not work the way it should, but it could also be your HD slowly dying. Did you ONLY lose files located on your desktop (and/or folders placed in the desktop)? If so, I'm pretty sure it has to do with the OS screwing with your files somehow (desktop cleanup is our suspect #1) or you have a really annoying little brother. :D
I'm just glad that my brother doesn't know anything about computers. He even doesn't know how to change his password for his computer. If I wanted to I could easily change his password in seconds xD. Cmd FTW!

i heard of malwarebytes good recommendation?
Don't have an antivirus?
If you do, run a complete analysis. If you don't, Avast is free and pretty decent :).

You should REALLY use an anti virus program always. I'm using Avira and it already killed countless little buggers that wanted to infest my pc.
