What you want to do, nobody respects. What you are good at, nobody cares. What you hate, society pushes on you. What you love, the world despises. Sometimes, I can just plain get frusterated..... Not that I would do anything about it, cuz I can't do a darn thing.
Sorry, I just feel like the world does not let people do what they want/are good at.
Ehhh, not much you can say. Thats the problem. Let's say you want a job, you are decent at math, but you have to be waiter, but you hate serving people.
I guess I can feel a little arogant at times, but it's still unfair.
When can people get real jobs, like lead designer on a game like COD? (I know thats a bit crazy, but you know what I mean)
Truth is, you are better off striving to get to where you want to be, where you get to do what you love doing (presuming it's legal), than to wallow in one of the dips in your life. :-/
Take heart in the fact that you are not stuck where you are. Things can get better if you work at it.
Well of course, and I am just starting out. Thing is, I feel I am better suited to Tech or something than giving people their food or bagging at a store, but nobody hires people that SEEM to be too young.
I could not mentally take stocking cans or something when I love technology :( Even bestbuy does not hire those that are aren't in their 20's yet...
I've worked as both a bagger at a grocery store and as a cashier. I'm also an engineer who's about to finish his Master's degree :P
It's not always about what you are suited for. The things you mentioned may not be up to your level or even within your expertise, but sometimes we just have to deal with these low's before we can truly enjoy the high's :)
Well, people seem to forget that the maps they are bashing are of their fellow modders. Everybody works hard on their mod, regardless of where it lands in the list.
Yeah, and those that deserve attention, as in, did the best job, do not sometimes get what they deserve. Which is different from being arogant, because they just want people to see that they did a good job.
Yeah, thats so true. I guess I can enjoy it even more knowing what I had to do to get there :)
Precisely, haha. There is always a story to share later on too. "Back when I was bagging groceries we had to walk six miles both ways in six feet of snow without shoes..."
I generally avoid sharing my views on this, but I'll go ahead and spill it. The popularity system does a great job of imitating a real game market. If your product is not advertised, it will not sell. If it is not what the public wants to pay cash for (spend time playing), then it will not sell. However, as great of a simulation as this is, we are a modding community with the only real revenue being recognition by the player community. Because this system is so harsh, modders often never even get a chance to shine. It also encourages competition between modders, who should hail each other's hard work instead of trying to tear it apart to gain a foothold in the system.
I'm very much into Tech aswell, but I work in a god damned warehouse... the plus side to that, I got my license to operate 3 different machines that weigh 4 tons(8000 pounds), 2 and 1/2 tons(5000), and 2 tons(4000), back in November. Sure, I still deal with alot of the bullshit, but I really enjoy operating those machines ;)
I like it so much I'm looking into becoming a Heavy Equipment Operator to drive THE BIG BOYS around. Oh hell ya ;P
Just think of some of the Hollywood Stars. I can't name you names, but alot of them had real shitty jobs, like literally. Some were Janitors, others waiters, taco bell, you name it, some probably had to do that line of work.
You gotta keep your chin up, keep sending out resumes, never give up. Life is tough sometimes. Imagine if you got tech without even a struggle. You wouldn't appreciate it half as much.
Sometimes you discover something you like along the way.
I was originally planning on being a Network Analyst, but wtf did I know at 19? hahaha. Wasted 2 years on that shit. Since then I've just been working Warehouse, struggling to figure out what I really want to do. Leaning towards Heavy Equip.
Advertising is not having ideas or great workmanship.. it's just yet another aspect required...
I'd be happy to help any mapmakers on marketing their map...but trust me it's as boring as the grocery workload..
(which i did my fair share of too.. just think about your mod AND do the grocery lifting crates at the same time!)

I wanted to be a painter when i was 7 or so... i'm a painter now, i'm 36, have been since i was 25 or so, but you know what i mean... i still do other stuff that'll take me downwind.. still working at it... and at other stuff... just don't give in

Look, if you like computers, maybe program a small game and sell it? (not in sc2 editor, of course). I myself used to program games for the PC and its really not that hard to make a simple, well polished game. Its not like its going to replace your real job but it could be fun and help prove your not just "some kid" who wants a computer related job.

I agree with the OP. It's pretty stupid, even in the modding community on the Blizzard Forums, people despise your work ><
