I know this thread is just a wall of text about me whining, but I need to get it out. I just did all the melee matches required to be in a division (for each mode), and from what I saw it looks like most players are just complete jerks... During the 20 matches needed, I've been insulted for my pseudonym (seriously? WTF...), been rushed almost 90% of the time (or cheesed, or had to rush with my team), some of them even flaming me AFTER the match and playing tough with me (yeah, thanks Blizzard, your chat system is soooo helpful here!).
Before I waste my time on this, can anyone here tell me if it's always that way in melee? Because as far as I can tell, I haven't spent a single match without being insulted... Oh wait, my bad... I won 3 or 4 games, they were pretty good actually! I thought bronze players were playing fair, mostly here to have fun, but I guess I was completely wrong. Even in 1v1, they just rush like crazy. The only few team games where I asked them not to rush, we won and the game was much more interesting.
Duh, I seriously get sick of this... Melee games are filled with dumb guys who believe rushing is the only strategy (me gotz a club, me hits enemiz! hoogah!). I'm starting to understand why people only play custom maps where the goal is to attack blindly (ie. Star Battle, DotA, TDs, Nexus war...). Is that even worth spending our time making maps for these complete jerks?...
Blah, I'm not even sure I like SC2 anymore... I like making maps and all, but if it's just to make maps that won't get popular because our players are idiots, I'm not sure it's worth... Hopefully, the SC2Mapster community is much more interested in the various projects we have here, but it's still hard as hell to find players who would love to join or host our games...
Other point worthy of note: OP is in EU, grenegg is in NA. I'm in NA too, and I also have never seen this sort of behavior despite having always been in Bronze since the beginning of time (i.e. I do play with Bronze-level skills have that's been my skill level since the early days of SC1 because I can't care enough to improve my melee skills). On the contrary, most people I've played against were either completely silent the entire game, said only a conservative "gl hf" and "gg" at the beginning and end of the match, or were very friendly and smart with verbal jabs sometimes being exchanged during the game.
Another possible factor is the time of day you pick to play. If you're playing around 16-17h, right when all the hyper kids come back from school in a hurry to play a game and "pwn sum n00bs" and when all the adults tired from a long day of work are stressed out and just want to let out the steam somewhere, then you're bound to have more chances of meeting troublesome players. If on the other hand you're playing around 4-5h, while there'll be a lot fewer players, most of them will be somewhat more dedicated gamers or people who live at their own pace, both of which are usually less belligerent to other players.
My advice: Learn to insult better. Go watch "Scrubs" and study each and every one of Dr. Cox's sentences.
And yea, rushes are really annoying... I know those happened so much when i and my friend 2v2ed... I'm pretty good against rushes though if i dont rely on my ally too much (Not saying he's bad, but if i rely on him i powerdrone too much and dont have enough to help him defend). I even stopped a double 6pool as zerg once (Losses: 2 drones, 1 zergling, had a relatively good economical build)
It does seem majority of people on bnet are complete idiots... Maybe not offending idiots, but plain stupid at the very least...
I rarely play melee. I dislike rushing. Not fun to me. I never play 1v1 coz this is competetive game and I dislike small competetive games (like DotA).
When I play melee I play 2v2 or 3v3 WITH friends. Its always fun. And when someone does error it doesnt matter.
Yesterday we played 4 rounds in a row. 1st round I was terran and I sucked so hard lol. Enemy rushed my ally with lots of army and I had only 2 marines.
I am usually zerg.
We finally won 4th round :D . One of us was quite good player, one is builing same units all the time -.-', and I am slow on hotkeys lol.
And I havent been in game argument for ages... I quite DotA coz community was really really terrible.
One of best community is Mechwarrior community, that also includes Crysis mode Mechwarrior living Legends.
You should report them, I do it all the time, it's fun. Never actually had any one insult me after the game, but people swear at me for lagging just a little bit, that's depressing...
Welcome to Reality. Now, please take a number in the line for the next stupid asshole to appear.
It's not only in Melee. It's like that EVERYWHERE. Worst in the most popular custom games as well as console games. I usually laugh my ass off when some 12 year old tries to scream at me with his very manly voice to insult me with things I've probably heard before he was born. It usually ends with him dropping dead at my feet after I killed him again, because he was too busy being a retard and more screaming until he leaves the game :>
WTF is the problem with rushing or cheesing?
I have never played a singal game without me/my opponent cheesing.
Rushing and cheesing are just anoter type of strategy like the others.
Since when doing a strategy that your opponent have hard time to beat makes u a jerk?
I understand your concern. Player behavior cant be fixed. But in regards to players rushing or the cheddar...
Its a strategy you know about, that players use, so in turn build a strategy against it. The joy of the game is overcoming those type of challenges. When someone rushes you and you effectively counter, it is a great feeling to beat that player. Use what they think is a strength against them. A few examples:
-----
Terran player rushes reapers, this takes away from their regular unit production and you can bet that if you can fend off the reapers at your base, that they will be left with little to no defense.
Zergling rush. It goes without saying that a single ling is weak. So if you are toss, grab a zealot or two and a cannon and put it near ur resources. Once you get enough forces this rush is squashed, then your playing mid to late game units. Terran can wall and then have enough units to matter by the time banelings hit the field. while were on banelings, if you see them coming, which you should, sting ur marines while u run. (have them move then tell just one to hold position and so on until the banelings are wasted on one marine/unit at a time.
-----
My bud and I always build like we are rushing, I get lings, he gets 5 zealot rush going. Then we tech, this way we get to play end game units but if the enemies rush, we can counter. The end game units that you want to use so bad are for big war scale battles. If the game ends with teir one units, then you arent seeing the big picture, that this is war.
Ugh...
Must... resist... the need... to answer... to you all!
@ anyone saying they never saw that themselves:
I'm not sure why the players I went against were so stupid, I don't think it's related to the time of the day because I played during the whole afternoon... I have to admit my skills that day were pretty lame though, 3-4 games won (out of 20) is obviously a very, very bad day. I didn't expect that, especially considering I won every single match in the last few days, right before reaching the end of the Training league.
@ anyone giving strategies to counter rushes:
Actually, I do know how to protect my main base quite efficiently now (that's the reason why I did the Training league entirely, the progress made since my first games is more than obvious)... I know how to counter early harass (fast reapers and such), trying to scout sometimes too, learning when to attack and/or expand, and I'm slowly learning how to hit&run and hit&attack efficiently... What pisses me off though, is that they ALWAYS rush and this is getting seriously boring. If for any reason you were just a bit too late, or your wall is not well protected against the first rush, you lose against some stupid player who just want to win the game to climb the ladder. If you manage to get rid of his units, you're pretty sure to win the game because he doesn't know how to play if it fails. How is that even funny?
As Tigerija said, and I completely agree with him, rushing is not fun for me. I don't like to be rushed, so I obviously don't like to rush either because I know how frustrating it is for the guy being attacked. I'd rather play it fair because it helps everyone improving their strategies, BOs, micro/macro, skills/APMs, etc... There is no point in rushing, especially in bronze, the only thing you'll learn is to control a few units and kill probes/drones/SCVs in a minute. Wow. So funny. I don't like cheesing either but I do admit it can help SOMETIMES, if used cleverly and not spending the whole game on this.
It seems like rushing is even more frequent in 2v2 (or more) because they just focus on a player in order to win. Somehow, I feel really sorry for them, their life must be pathetic if their only consolation in life is to "pwn sum noobz" instead of having fun in a game... Smells like they're taking revenge in the game for their shitty lives or something like that... I pity them, for real.
...Anyway, if I could, I would play games only with friends as Tigerija suggested. But I don't have that much friends to play with, most of them are diamond, or gold in the worst case. I don't think my BOs are that bad actually, I know I lose my units pretty easily though because my micro is still lame... but it's not worth being flamed, I'm sure of it. I did report and/or block the players who pissed me off but it's just getting on my nerves, I don't want to spend my time playing this game just to be flamed pointlessly for any mistake I could make. I have other things to do than spend my time on a game, especially if it means I'll have to justify my actions to a stupid kid with no future each time I play...
@ Gorandor: You made me laugh. In a good way, I mean. :)
@ Fushoo: Don't get me wrong, cheesing or rushing doesn't make you a jerk. I call "jerks" those who keep flaming players when they lost the game... as if they were playing their life or something... I fear there are a lot of diamond players who are diamond just because they keep rushing in every game. It does not show their skills at all, this is why I enjoy (a lot) when they come across a smarter player that just outrun them in a blink and they ragequit. They still don't learn anything out of this, and that's a shame IMO...
i say this game was over advertised so every one gets it watch boxer from sc1 cause all i know he was so well know to rush and win if this game didn't have huge signs outside any game store just have it maybe on the counter where the kids couldn't see lol but i mean where i was when pre-ordering there was almost like 120-180 people there but trust me people not that play sc but parents cause there kids just see something big and they want it

Me not happy. :(
Consider that motivation to go up ranks : )
I started in gold and never have seen anything of that sort, so I assume thats something that only goes on in lower divisions : )

I haven't seen it, although I generally play custom melee amd UMS maps rather than ladder :/

I love trolls, it's so funny when you kill them again and again xD. Especially when they have a microphone :).
block communications all together at the start of the game will solve
This gets a cookie.
