[0003] The technology, briefly described, is a content presentation system and method allowing content providers to regulate the presentation of content on a per-user-view basis. Content is distributed to consuming devices, such as televisions, set-top boxes and digital displays, with an associated license option on the number of individual consumers or viewers allowed to consume the content. The limitation may comprise a number of user views, a number of user views over time, a number of simultaneous user views, views tied to user identities, views limited to user age or any variation or combination thereof, all tied to the number of actual content consumers allowed to view the content. Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content. In one embodiment, a license manager on the consuming device or on a content providers system manages license usage and content consumption. The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.
[0082] The computer 2210 may also include other removable/non-removable, volatile/nonvolatile computer storage media. By way of example only, FIG. 10 illustrates a hard disk drive 2241 that reads from or writes to non-removable, nonvolatile magnetic media, a magnetic disk drive 2251 that reads from or writes to a removable, nonvolatile magnetic disk 2252, and an optical disk drive 2255 that reads from or writes to a removable, nonvolatile optical disk 2256 such as a CD ROM or other optical media. Other removable/non-removable, volatile/nonvolatile computer storage media that can be used in the exemplary operating environment include, but are not limited to, magnetic tape cassettes, flash memory cards, digital versatile disks, digital video tape, solid state RAM, solid state ROM, and the like. The hard disk drive 2241 is typically connected to the system bus 2221 through an non-removable memory interface such as interface 2240, and magnetic disk drive 2251 and optical disk drive 2255 are typically connected to the system bus 2221 by a removable memory interface, such as interface 2250.
[0088] The disclosed technology may also be practiced in distributed computing environments where tasks are performed by remote processing devices that are linked through a communications network. In a distributed computing environment, program modules may be located in both local and remote computer storage media including memory storage devices.
[0086] The disclosed technology is operational with numerous other general purpose or special purpose computing system environments or configurations. Examples of well-known computing systems, environments, and/or configurations that may be suitable for use with the technology include, but are not limited to, personal computers, server computers, hand-held or laptop devices, multiprocessor systems, microprocessor-based systems, set top boxes, programmable consumer electronics, network PCs, minicomputers, mainframe computers, distributed computing environments that include any of the above systems or devices, and the like.
Theres a lot more, but thats what quickly caught my eye.
Steve Jobs Ghost approves... but seriously look at things from Microsofts perspective. Since day one Microsoft products have been pirated... driving the technological advancements in DRM that counters the technology of the time. From punch cards, code wheels, to special floppy discs to online only content.(Cough Battlenet) most companies have been developing and coming up with anti-theft methods because lets be for real... even though it is illegal it is impossible to bring causes of actions to individuals whom break copyright and piracy laws. As a result legit entitled consumers will have to deal with inconvenience.
Corporations have the right to do whatever they want to do... if you don't like it sucks to be you... boycott microsoft all you want.... throw your xbox away and buy over priced macs. They won't care. They are rich. -_- I mean seriously they are gonna make millions off of a single video game. (In which isn't coming out on PC because of pirates.
You can never escape Big Brother. You only have the illusion of Freedom. All of your information is already circling the internet. Google has taking a picture of your house without your consent and posted it on the google map app. The government has sattelite systems that can capture video of what's going on in your back yard in real time. Microsoft isn't going to try to take over the world. I mean even if they have the capability to monitor everyone, They will not. Could you imagne how mch they would spend hiring people to monitor everyone 24/7. More likely then not they will only trace individuals whom are suspected to have committed a cyber crime. Such technology will help out the criminal justice system with dealing with cyber crimes more prudently. You know the bad ones like pedofiles, child pornographers, cyber terrorist, and cyber bullies. I Guarantee you the government is paying Microsoft to develop such technology for the war on terror. BooHoo it will take 5 extra minutes to start playing your new video game.
Pro tip... the only way to ensure you aren't constantly monitored is to stay off the internet. If microsoft wants to innovate let them. Prices may go down for products if an anti-piracy system is perfected (Not taking greed into account)
:3 make sure you turn your webcam and camera phone off at night or when you're doing something your not supposed to be doing. They must be applying this tech to burner phones because most criminals that are pro's don't use phones with contracts.
If you had an amazing product and people weren't paying for it left and right when you want them to, you would take action to harm them as well.
Cant say I agree with sopa, but I do agree with protecting IP. Cant really blame them in my book.
IMO you should boycott illegally obtained content, which I doubt anybody really wants to do.
That's the thing though. I DON'T think they have an "amazing product". I think they have a medeocre product which is the mainstream and due to momentum and microsoft elbowing out competitors at every opertunity.
Which ever company holds the market share has the power to remain in power regardless of the quality of their product.
Actually several studies have shown that Piracy actually helps Cross seas sales. Because what people do is they try a game or a movie, and if they like it they buy it. if they dont they dont, Piracy FORCES companies to make a better product, but like anything it needs to be in moderation otherwise it will start to hurt...
DONT FEEL BAD FOR THESE MONEY GRUBBING RETARDS.... If they wanted to protect their shit... they would have changed their DRM thats been on movies since 2000...
I used to moderate for a Torrent site, and I can tell you, SONY made an AWESOME anti Piracy mesure, Research Cinevia, Its GREAT. but like blu ray Microsoft and these other competing companies dont want to use, what they have been told they can use...
They wouldnt have "Piracy" if they would have good business model. But since they have monopoly over PC OS for general users, they just want to rob everybody.
The world is advancing rapidly and instead decreasing IP protection duration from 8+(8) year, they increased it now to life time +50 years, fuck WTO...
I personally think that governments dont have the right to force any IP protection, so I will just continue to pirate everything.
hahaah, in america its 70 years... after the creator dies... Yeah... we pay BILLIONS, and in the past 12 years TRILLIONS, in america for these retards... they have Billions of their own, they should protect their own shit, With protection that burnt into the audio and such... They have the technology, they just refuse to use it because they make more money off the lawsuits.
I think so for more reasons than just the ones you've listed and thanks for that. For me it all went downhill with VISTA They tightened the Reins so much it felt like you could only use Microsoft Products in my opinion, which is where they want to go with this and windows 8 I feel. Windows Phone, Windows Software, and Windows OS. I think piracy is there way of fooling their Customers into accepting such a restricting environment, It's more about FORCING their Products to be used over alternatives. They likely intend to make using programs like Open Office impossible so you have to buy Their overpriced $159.00 Micro$oft Office.
If you can run it then it can be Pirated Spore was the most Pirated game because of it's absurd restrictions, 5 installs max, DRM you can only delete with a hard drive reformat, ect. Gone are the days when you can buy a Game put it on all your PC's and anyone can play it anytime, even at the same time. With these Prisons for the Product, 1 game is tied to an online account that must be online every so many days to keep using said product. Share that Account and no more Game go Buy it again because we say that's Piracy. You no longer own anything you're only renting the License to use our Intellectual Property (Which will become monthly for all entertainment in 5+ years). We can Change the agreement of How you may Use our IP anytime.
That's what will come if we give in and let any company remove owning what you bought, sadly people are buying some of these restricted products. Wait till this come to Movies, You've Watched this movie more times than Allowed please Purchase more views for $8.99. (maybe it's every 10 Views) There called Micro-Transactions and they'll make it so you pay way more for Products than ever before. League of Legends is a Perfect example the game is Free to Play but you either buy the Units you play as or use the current weeks free ones, with that system they've gotten people to pay from $60-$120 Minimum and some even more for skins, wards, ect. Earn them more money by billing you over time for use or Micro-Transactions for seemingly less money at a time they get more money than possible with owning everything at first use of the product.
Ahhh I feel much better now after ranting about how much I hate the Trend I see toward paying more for products, and unable to use them as freely and openly. Such as watching a DVD, Blu-ray on your TV, PC, or gaming Console. It will be more like a PS3, XBox 360 or Wii Game, Buy 1 Product for 1 Device and if you want the same product on a different device you must buy it for that device (but not for the same Reason as you can't play PS3 games on a Wii).

I must defend League of Legends though, it is the most Elegant Free 2 Play.
Vanity crap cost, The rest can be obtained by playing the game. So you dont HAVE to buy anything. I have put 20$ into League, just because I support it
Also league allows Custom Skins to be installed and modded into the game, but other players wont be able to see it.
The issue has never really been about piracy or protecting ideas and their rights when products are created, it has always been purely about money and at the smallest cost to the big players as possible. Now yes every company needs to watch its money to stay profitable but through sopa and protect, the big companies want to shave off the cost to themselves and give it to the small ones; possibly to push them out of business and again only aid in their monopoly. It was already shown even during that old debate that the current system had the capacity to deal with piracy. The only thing that sopa and protect ip did would be to force the responsibility off the provider and onto the small individual companies in turn raising their own cost and making new business impossible to start. Its like making only lawyer study law at school but not the judges; its bs.
I have always liked and thought microsoft had a huge advantage over apple specifically because it was less limiting. People like options, the ability to customize things to their own personality and don't want to be nickled and dimed for everything. There's a reason why android has almost instantly overtaken apples phone market as who would pay $100 for an 8gb upgrade when you can grab endless additions of 32gb for $10.
Microsoft has already proven to be instrusive and can turn on almost anyone computer remotely by hiding a switch in the programming. Whats worse is they force you to do it specifically two different ways twice so that if you accidently found out they can still access it. Have a look into your remote tab in your system properties.
I know i for one will never buy apple specifically because of how limiting their program and how it forces you to use only their crap. I do know however that i also specifcally go out and pirate just apple products just to piss them off because of their idiotic business model.
I personally am seriously thinking of permanently boycotting microsoft.

I see where yall are coming from, and its not the piracy that bugs me, its the fact of giving a corporation this kind of power to watch people....
The government doesnt even have this power... and for good reason.
the gov does it anyways though.... and nobody cares.... well I do... but apparently Im a nobody.

Studies show that people with skins are 20% more likely to win a game.
@Mozared: Go
LOL, Where were these studies taken ? did they account for how long the players had been playing? how was there a control for this?
How about players skill.
My olderbrother bought His favorite character a skin, Annie, his skill didnt increase or decreade due to vanity...
Thats kind of like saying, me changing the actor model will give the player a better chance.
And its also more likely that they play the game more than the others, so they are more skilled.
