That's strange. It's working fine for me? Say I want to find the map 'Squadcraft'. I go to the bar right beneath my user name in the top right corner (the one saying "Search...", not the one saying "Search forum..."). I type in Squadcraft and get a list with results. I set the filter to 'Projects only' and I get left with these results; the SquadCraft 1 and SquadCraft 2 project pages.
It might be a problem with the theme - I'm still using the old (blue) one.
I give up searching that list, but I found Nexus Word Wars and 13 days after the release of 1.5 it's back to where it was, so don't blame the popularity system ;-)
If google doesn't give you the map's page find a player's profile that played the map, then you can search the maps in his list and find the map you want.

Google works better for searching SC2ranks than the site's built-in search. (e.g. do a Google search for ["Nexus Word Wars" site:sc2ranks.com]).
