Because of a bug in the current editor, the terrain in my map is screwed up. That's not a new bug, but an old one. It had happened me before, but I used to fix it by reverting the t3Terrain.xml file using a mpq editor. However, after patch 1.5, Blizzard has protected the mpq files, and you can no longer modify them.
Do you know of some way of modifing read-only files from the mpq?
protecting mpq's ergo so that any random nobody can't just open your map and look at your galaxy script file and rip off all your code. or expose vulnerabilities in any ladder/admin/point tracking system you've created. etc

Wouldn't that mean we're no longer able to export and modify existing assets?
Open the console in the editor, enter "browse" command, search what you are looking for, right click and export. :)
It doesn't display everything, though. For example the Battle.net.MPQ contains assets that aren't there, To use them we need to import these into the map (I think).
We could ask Blizzard to give us the possibility to refer to these asset archives, too. Some pictures are nice to have or to use.
I've exported a few of those (and edited them) and will use them in my maps.
Is there any type of editor that will create or modify mpq/sc2mod files that will work with the 1.5 patch?
Otherwise how can we insert new textures, models, sounds, AI scripts without any type of MPQ editor?

Save as components folder, close the map, edit the files, reopen the map, save as map again.
I just tested that and I can change the settings like tiling size with it and it loads them properly.
For other aspects of the game, the import module can edit some files, but not all. The t3Terrain.xml couldn't be altered there.
Worked. Thank you.
Son of a bitch...I got my hopes up when I saw the thread title :(.

I may be misinterpreting your post, but I'm curious as to why you are hopeful about .mpq's being protected.
