I'm posting this in regards to the featured post Sixen uploaded on the Home page yesterday, and I'm wondering of what it's functionality will be.
It seems to me the Marketplace is a place where people can sell their maps for a few bucks, because Blizzard will only give you a minuscule percentage of the revenue it brings back, to give you credit for the work you've done if you will. Don't forget Blizzard owns everything explicitely presented in your map. You agreed to it in the ToA.
If I were to make a quality map, how would it work? A blizzard employee messages you, offering to sell your map? If you refuse such an offer, would they go so far as to steal your map idea (Because they own it of course), make one of their own and publish it onto their marketplace? Or maybe, even simpler, take the map you created and stick it there anyways, with or without your consent?
Or maybe a mapper must submit their map. If they do that, would they be verified by Blizzard to make sure it isn't spam or broken before permitting it on the Marketplace?
How many of you are willing to "pay" for a map? Personally I'm not. The only thing a marketplace would cause is a drop in players because the author made the decision to "sell" their map, and the players aren't ready to pay more than they already did to play. Tell me what you think, or if you have any facts about the matter, please say so because I'm a little worried about where this is heading.
Well it could motivate people to produce better quality maps. Even allow them to 'hire' artists and such to add extra high quality content.
Lets say it was $1 to 'buy' a map, to be playable for a User for all time. I think it would a tiny price to pay. Lets also say 10k people bought it and the creator got say 25%? I think it would be more but that alone would be $2500 for a mapper.
Considering alot mappers tend to be young students, doing it for fun on the side, it could work and help them get by.
I assume it will ALWAYS be up the mappers to decide whether they want to charge.
Okay, first of all, that would be such crap. If I make a map, Blizzard is making money off the fact that I spent time to make the game already! There is no way I am making a map that gives Blizzard 75% of the profit.
Second, I think the mapper should be able to decided the price too. I know some games could be worth $1, while others could be worth 10 cents, and others could be worth $5.
Third, I know that a ton of people on SC are my age, that being High School or younger. They don't have there own credit cards or whatever to buy this stuff, even if they wanted to.
Fourth, if Blizzard releases this kind of system, they had better release some sort of global variable support. No way in HELL am I making a game that can't detect what is going on in other instances of the game. If Blizzard got 50% of the profits and used the money to support that feature, then I would support it.
It's probably a bit early to go all Chicken Little on this. I haven't heard any specific details, so I'm not going to stress over it until we actually know what the model will look like. It's probably best not to assume the worst in the meantime :P
If I remember right there was a poll/topic about whether us mapster people would actually put a price on our maps, and I think most (if not all) of us said that we'd keep our maps free ;)
I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it works out :/
Also, if i understood it right, the option to actually sell your map for money will not be implemented at the same time as the marketplace but later (which makes me wonder what else is special about it...)
If I can set up for my map "free trial" with time limit and/or limited features I would consider it after Marketplace arrives. I also could actually then pay for the artists who has made graphics for my TCG map.
I mean, you did pay 70$, and now you'd ahve to pay MORE for something only a few hundred would play because tehy too decided to pay. Talk about a major crash in popularity.

Personally I think it's a great idea.

Great to be back and part of the community again!

Does anyone know officially what the % will be? Has Blizzard released such information?
I just gave a random terrible % to show that you could still make quite alot.
If I can set up for my map "free trial" with time limit and/or limited features I would consider it after Marketplace arrives. I also could actually then pay for the artists who has made graphics for my TCG map.
So you guys actually see this as a viable option?

I think it depends on how much work was put into the map and how many resources where used. But I assume most authors would keep their maps free.
Also still looking for a official % if anyone has one.
I doubt I'll work on anything for the market if Blizzard takes more than the 15-20% ¬¬.
@silvermage: Go
There aren't any official details yet. I'm pretty sure the second that info's available it'll be on the front page here.
