I posted this on reddit a couple of days ago. It got some attention, and now SC2Modspot is going to do an in-depth video review of my map; definitely check out his channel and submit your own maps to him!
Ah, yes, it's certainly human nature to find someone to blame. I certainly share the OP's sentiments (about the frustration, not the murder of untold millions via nuclear detonation,) but I'm not so sure there's a way to supplant another aspect of human nature - that is, the populist movement. We have celebrities that are popular because they are popular. We also have maps that are popular because they are popular. Even if something has absolutely no other merits beyond its popularity, it will still maintain that popularity because popularity is mostly self-sustaining.
I guess getting into that popularity cycle is the biggest challenge for map makers. That's why we have so many carbon-copy remakes and iterations of popular map-styles.
Except BasharTeg, wc3 and sc1 didn't have this popularity problem. And real life popularity works differently than b.net popularity. In real-life, there's room for as many stars as it can handle. In b.net, the stars are limited to about 20. The reality is, sc2 has HUNDREDS of stars, can you imagine if real-life celebrities are only limited to 20? There's only 20 movies stars you can ever see on screen. There's only 20 musicians. Very few people would be watching movies or listening to music if that was the case.
Sc2 b.net is more like one of those 3rd world dictatorships where they limit who the stars are. We don't have a popularity system, don't let the name fool you.

Actually there are many who would say Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 1 had worse popularity problems. I myself remember having to sit watching the Join Game screen for upwards of 10 minutes until a game other than DotA appeared and was actually viable. Even if other games were hosted it often took a long time for the lobby to fill. Guess what happens in SC2? The exact same thing... except now the join game screen isn't flooded with only 1 type of game. My point is that there's no reason to place the blame on Blizzard when what you're facing is reality itself.
Any analogy has its limitations... that's what analogies are, after all - limitations of the big picture. Still, you're ignoring the fact that a very, very, very, very small percentage of actors and musicians make it as big time celebrities even if they have superior talent. Which is the same situation mapmakers face. The. Exact. Same. Situation. It is, as the saying goes, the nature of the beast.
I think it's been proven multiple times on SC2mapster and battle.net forums, and probably elsewhere, that the current popularity system is inferior to WC3's and SC1's system. The "many" who say SC2 is better is actually very few and limited. I've read an astonishingly higher volume of posts regarding that it's WORSE. The "many" you speak of is a tiny portion compared to the "many" that say SC2's popularity system is worse. In fact, it's probably not even 1%. Just the main page of the battle.net custom forums has more threads regarding how bad the pop system is than there are threads of how "good" it is with all the pages combined.
Also, analogies are not "limitations of the big picture." Need I point you to dictionary.com too?

I really don't give two shits about the definition of the word "analogy." Or what your definition of "good" and "bad" are. You can't prove an opinion as fact. You read a high volume of posts claiming it's worse because that's what people have to deal with right now. Could Blizzard make the system better? Yes, obviously, but I don't think the system right now is so bad that it's worth crying about. Quit being a little bitch about it and just deal with it, I say.
No one WOULD be to blame, but Blizzard refuses to fix the problem... Admit they are wrong(This is what they refuse to do), and change it to the old system, with new modifications, We can still have dedicated servers where blizzard is running the show, but just make it so that when I'm in the lobby there is a always changing lobby for other players to see me.
Also I wish they would fix the chat channels... they are inferior, no other way of looking at that LOL/
Blizzard doesn't refuse to fix the problems; they've said that they'll be implementing a new system based on how long people have been in a lobby for Heart of the Swarm.
Aaahhh here we go once more, where is Eternal Wraith? Dont get surprised if the target of the next *Nuclear launch detected* alert is this thread.
Im here. The picture thingy was kinda funny though. By now, its really pointless to take the Popularity system serious. Discuss/etc, but dont let it devolve into trouble.
Lock the topic after the most offensive and useless post was made? Or lock the topic so you can get the last word in?
I was discussing the topic. Just because I might not agree with everyone doesn't mean my post is useless. And you gotta admit, that guy was being kind of a dick to me. That's why I asked for the topic to be locked - because it seemed apparent that responders were not going to be civilized human beings. But I'm done. I must have forgotten how dull it was to talk about the popularity system...
I was thinking of a really intelligent, inspired thing to say, but then I realized this was another Battlenet 2.0 discussion. So I have a good solution in the form of a function to solve this issue once and for all!
srand ( time(NULL) );
ranNum = rand() % 10 + 1;
While (SCMappers > 0)
{
if(ranNum < 7)
{
cout << "Bnet 2.0 Sucks for these reasons, references to old bnets";
}
elseif(ranNum < 9)
{
cout << "Bnet 2.0 isn't so bad for these reasons";

Don't do that ... Dry and I are underneath them with the TNT we stole from Minecraft!
Now, who would get to play your map now that 99% of the SC2 players are dead?
@Swagblanket: Go
LOL that's funny but yea blizzard isn't to blame... its Activision that's to blame. so nuking blizzard wouldn't help much
Even though there is Activision Blizzard, Blizzard itself has a independent management. So you can't blame Activision for what Blizzard is doing.

Didnt know that, Sounds great... Sucks it took so long, but better late then never.
on a side note... The current system is crap... no map should get played 90k hours in one day.... and the rest of the maps starving for players. lol
@Taintedwisp: Go
Yeah. But it's Blizzard. They never do major mechanical updates without expansions.
