I wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to these forums, but I registered here because I want to learn how to use the SC2 map editor.
I was "Kaine_Stolkyn" on WC3, and I made the Autumn Cross TD, Sunken Cross TD, and Dalaran Cross TD maps. (among many others that never picked up much popularity) I plan on redesigning a brand new Autumn Cross TD with new features.
However, I have tried working with the unit editor on Galaxy, and... well... it is one of the most confusing things I've ever seen. I have been to numerous websites, and watched numerous tutorials, and I am still struggling to make a unit that works. (the tutorials always failed, even when I followed them to the letter) Trying many times over a few months of failure, I finally gave up over the summer. After hearing about SC2 Mapster, I decided to give it one more shot, and hope that the community here can help me overcome my disability of ignorance on this editor.
Though I was skilled in the WC3 editor, I feel like a baby on Galaxy.
If anyone can point me where I can begin (this is a fairly big website) for n00bies on creating units, towers, and upgrades, I would highly appreciate it.
Thanks so much for reading my thread. I'm book marking these forums. With your help, I can make you guys some really fun games in the near future,
bienvenue welcome wilkommen alligato tchao et tutti quanti
mapster will rekindle your fun
if i may, star2 is patched regularly so tutorials might be a tad outdated :) but mapster is the one with the most tutorials all around (and the involvement of the posting members is palpable)
there are many friendly "ask questions" members and even self proclaimed "mentors" on the site and the trick is (obviously) to get them through the proper forums/threads.. and to be patient when you do send them your first pm (don't be shy and ask several :) )
type as many key words as you can think of (td maps, tutorials etc..) to find the proper forums/already useful and relevant posts and you will quickly identify several people willing to help get you hooked (then, as in all things, it's a question of pugnacity :^p )
glhf
although galaxy is purposefully not user friendly, its capabilities warrant the effort (well if you discount the no lan/lag notion)
Dam houndofbasker I still have a really hard time reading your posts lol.
Anyway, I suggest just keeping at it repeatedly. When I started I was quite confused but just by doing it a lot I eventually figured out why things are made, and how they interact.
Also, be careful that you actually DO follow tutorials to the letter. You don't know how many emails/PMs I get where people say that and then I find out they missed a crucial step in the process (that was in the video).
Lastly, the editor is unforgiving and every piece matters. Things can work and not work at the snap of a finger.
Welcome to sc2mapster!
As a welcome gift, I hereby present you with the permission to buy us all a round of drinks!
Once you get sc2 and the editor, I recommend you check these stickies:
Map Night: EU, NA (Dunno where you live)
That's a weekly "event" happening every friday where people from mapster get together and play good custom maps that arent high in popularity
SC2Streamster
This is a livestream that's held multiple times a day. Its made up out of Newbie Wednesday, Terraining Thursday and Mapcraft (A podcast hosted by Mozared, Eiviyn and me). You'll also find recordings of Data Mondays (Discontinued until we have a new host for it), and Triggering Tuesdays should be running sometime soon as well
Mapster Mentoring
A long list of people willing to help anyone, and preffered ways of contacting them.
And you might find the Tutorial List on the wiki useful. At the top of the page you also have a button that brings you to the wiki itself.
Now that you're done reading this wall of text I copy pasted from the other new guys thread, to your problem: You're not saying what isn't working. If you give us more details, we can start working on your problem, but just saying "the unit doesnt work" doesnt help, as a unit is composed of a large amount of different fields and even other areas of the data editor, and you're not pinpointing the problem. If it's got no model, create an actor for it. If it doesn't move, go through all the movement fields. maybe your acceleration is set to 0. If it isnt attacked by others, check its flags and/or movement plane array fields. I and many others would be happy to help you, and we will :)
I hope you don't get too frustrated with the data editor. It's a hard thing to get into, but once you figure it out, it's easy. I recommend you check the mapster mentoring thread I linked above and talk to some of the data experts listed there.
And as Houndofbaskerville said (I'm actually rather surprised that I'm beginning to understand him, lol.) try searching for keywords of your problems, theres a good chance it has been solved already (Check even threads that arent about your problem - Theres a good chance someone will give a step by step guide on how to do something which could help you)
Hey Kaine, I was a big fan of your autumn cross td back in the wc3 days, glad to see you will be joining us on the sc2 editor.
Anyways, yes, the galaxy editor is a bit more complex than the world editor but ultimately gives you much more freedom and power.
To begin learning about it I just watched a lot of Onetwo's tutorials (thanks onetwo!) and basically just trial and error on my own.
Good luck!
Edit: if you run into a problem, chances are someone else on the internet has had the same problem and posted about it. Google is your friend!
Yo, I am DrSuperEvil, you may know me from games like Empire Earth, Empires Dawn Of The Modern World, Freelancer, Warcraft 3, Diablo2 and a couple of others.
If it comes to data, I am one of the better experts in that field (although I can recommend several other good data editors on this site). Just send me a PM because I specialize in making stuff from nothing.
For starters, watch the tutorials by OneTwoSC and read the wiki on this site (button at top of page). I advise looking at units, Unit actors, weapons and movers for a start. There is enough data on the wiki to make more than a marine from scratch.
@DrSuperEvil: Go You're also the most modest one and you outnumber anyone when it comes to posts :-)
@kainestolkyn: Go Welcome to SC2Mapster! And fill DrSuperEvil with PMs cause he's really that good. Your remakes will probably get some popularity from WC3 players and hell we know we need some help with popularity...
Holy crap! This is the most welcoming I've ever received from forums! I appreciate the kindness! :D
I will check out all the things mentioned here as I get time to do so. ESPECIALLY that podcast! If that's true, I'm an open book. Teach me!
peranzormal: I'm glad someone recognized my old maps. Makes me feel at home, lol! I was so terrible at modding back then, but I've got some great new ideas, and I think I can make popular maps.
TheAlmaity: I really appreciate those references!
For those of you who were asking for specific problems, I understand completely, and I realize it's annoying to have people saying "it doesn't work," without giving much detail. But... here's the problem: Every time I have tried to create a builder, who can build a tower, and the tower can attack, and upgrade itself, something has gone wrong. And it's always been something different. Which means, either I'm a complete idiot, or the unluckiest guy in the world. (it's probably both)
Keep in mind, I'm kinda' backwards. I have no problem with triggers and coding (for the most part). I just can't figure out how to properly make a unit. For example, the most frustrating thing I've ever seen, is all the crap they attach to a unit, and I can't figure out which part of it I'm supposed to duplicate, and then, if I remember all of them, it'll take me 3 hours (yes, sometimes literally 3 hours) to find all the renamed duplications, and then rename them individually for ONLY ONE UNIT. At this rate, it's gonna' be 2 years before I have a playable map online.
THE FILE ATTACHMENT: Is a list of instructions I made for myself before I quit at the beginning of summer. It's my own little reference guide that I could look at in case I forgot stuff. And I've probably forgotten more since I've been out of practice for a few months. Whatever's in that txt document, is the extent of my knowledge. (if that)
If that podcast is going on tonight, and I find it, I'll tune in.
Well, the "Duplicate [data element]" command is really confusing for everything but the simplest stuff (like site operations). My favorite tactic is to just cannibalize/imitate various structures and units to do what i want. :)

In fact I've found googling this site is more robust then the default forum search provided, if you know the search parameter.
