So i am working on an rpg atm, cause well i like rpgs and find the lack of them on sc2 atm kinda sad. However im finding it kinda hard to thinking up of ideas for items, creatures, and other general "content filler" lets call so theres stuff in the map. So i was wondering how other ppl help them selfs come up with ideas and if anyone can give me ideas for how i can help myself to come up with what seems like the 100th item, creature, or what ever.
Just to clarify, im asking what tips and tricks people use for when they are brainstorming for things in their map not actual ideas that i could use in my map.
i normaly look at other map, and see what i think they are doing wrong, and that gives me ideas, also for abilities and other data stuff try going over some of the tutorials, normaly i follow the tutorial and then start to change and add extra things, also to get a better understanding of the editor.
seeing as I'm older ideas are easier to come up with because of a huge array of games Ive played over my lifetime. Generally our team looks at "the good, the bad, and the ugly" then we take and improve what we like and leave the rest. Very similar to what Jacob does with other maps. Other than that its a matter of practice the more you brainstorm the easier it gets. When we hit a dead end creatively we just keep going. Granted you'll come up with some ideas that won't work or are bad but you just keep pushing that creative intellect of yours and eventually it will come easier. Also it helps to bounce ideas off other people (its why working in a team is nice). They can help keep you on good ideas, plus your ideas will generally help them spawn other good ideas and vice versa.
Well, buy yourself a pocket sized noteblock. It's splendid for taking notes of spontaneous ideas. Just keep it around and eventually you should have a large collection of crazy stuff.
Read a fantasy book or play some immersive RPGs (Baldur's Gate series is great at this. If you play BG2, I guarantee you will never run out of ideas for quests). If you want something more spacey, KOTOR is good.
If you have a group of imaginative people, role playing is another great way to brainstorm.
Unless you've got your head flowing full of ideas, there's really no point in working on such maps. Better to stop and let your ideas develop (or work on the technical stuff like inventory systems). Otherwise it makes for a dull experience for both the mapper (hitting blocks frequently, putting off the map for long periods of time, eventually abandoning it) and the person playing it.
I usually look at mods made for Oblivion. Some of those are really great. One has a great quest line. Sadly I can't play oblivion due to vista being a douche. Luckily I have windows 7 waiting to be installed, sadly vista won't let me for some reason.
Just look at other RPGs and see what you get from those. I usually look at RPGs and then go how would that look in starcraft.
