So, the most common theory I've heard is that the Voice is a Xel'Naga.
But, something about that struck me as odd. Blizzard has already gone the "good god turned evil" route in Warcraft.
In terms of the vision, the "darkness" could mean everything falling under the control of the voice, not actually being eaten. The Hybrids, combined with this want to control, points me to one suspect:
Mengsk. I believe he is the dark voice. He could have made himself some kind of Hybrid-Ovemind to control the zerg. He is also dead-set on killing Kerrigan, the only person who can stop the Dark Voice.
My idea is that blizzard are going with alot of predictable turns, one-sided characters and reused cliches. In the end, it's the story about a boy and a girl, where villains will most likely play as a comedic relief characters and surprises and plot twists are most likely to be revealed/explained in intro cinematic.
The younger, less competitive audience is to be mesmerized by impending doom by an ancient evil, while fans of multilayer mostly won't care about lore.
But to make my post more than a useless rant, I'll throw in the following:
Seing as Xel'Naga were mostly a scientist race, Dark Voice if probably one of their creations which they cast out as "failed". Full of anger it probably swore to someday overcome it's creators in all possible ways. He wants to destroy them, destroy their creations, and laugh at how their "failure" surpassed them.
This makes him an ancient evil (yay, ancient), connected to Xel'Naga (even more ancient mythical stuff), and he even has generic evil motive (revenge! kill all!).
He probably has great powers, able to influence minds and create his own life forms (some void-based parasites). With this he can influence events from afar and create/enlist agents while granting them mysterious powers.
If Megnsk is somehow involved it's probably that 3rd party gave him knowledge and means to create a perfect weapon against aliens. He wants power and control. And a controllable hybrid seems like a pretty good weapon to me. Of course he's just being used by DarkVoices agents, and will be discarded once hybrid breeding is completed (unless our noble heroes won't kill him before that). Who knows, maybe blizzard will do something original and make us unwillingly help Megnsk after he had been discarded (I'm just don't want him dead).
i wholeheartedly agree that an online game is more than story and that a magnificent story would not help a bad game...
but fuuuuuuu.. queue how bout having a good storyline too?
WoL wasn't bad per say.. but wasdn't good either... i mean you have so many shite to steal from that delivering low grade stuff seems weird... its nt like it takes a lot .. writers god damn it... a real plot is only a plus.. not to mention cheap as hell :^p
anyway, i'm not getting my hopes up ... only for net features.. cause that's important lololololololololllll!!!!

that somehow sounded like Sargeras to me lolll.
I just hope all this Xel'naga race trying to renew their production cycle thing doesnt turn into a Mass Effect story (Dark Voice would be equivalent to the Reapers in ME).
I like the idea of Mengsk being the Dark Voice; i mean he creates these hybrid things right. Couldve easily experimented on splicing human DNA with protoss or zerg, or even both.
That said, one of the things making me curious from the Liberty campaign, story-wise, is Dr. Narud, (spell it backwards its Duran). so hmm.. Samir Duran anyone?
Starcraft lore has been tainted by Warcraft lore, specially in recent years, so don't get surprised or disappointed if the Dark Voice comes to be a good god turned evil. Blizzard no longer holds lore as important as it used to be.
And I think Mengsk is definitely working for the Dark Voice or one of his agents. Even though he may not realize it.
I think one of the lead story writers for SC2 was a guy who wrote story for ME;
Btw, didn't play WoW or ME, but I'm sure that blizzard got no trouble telling same story all over again.
How about this? Dark voice is a Xel'Naga who experimented on himself with Void energies? He maddened and "fell from grace". That would explain why he's referred to as "The Fallen One".
Edit:
Dr. Narud. Head of Möebius Foundation who are researchers and archeologists. A man in position of power. And Kerrignas remark about him. And the word play with his name. *Sigh*
It is clear that many people love WOL story, and I dislike arguing, everyone got their preferences.
It's just that when I think about Blizzards vision of lore for SC I go "Noo, this vision, I cannot bear it, stop". But the truth is that it is me who should stop caring, I'm just not in their targeted audience T_T.
You see, the only reason I play a lot of games is the story. For me, a bad story can ruin an entire game, and a great story can save a horrible game...
He looks a lot like an infested Protoss or such to me. It could really go every direction though. Could be Samir Duran who's actually an evil Xel'Naga, could be some kind of Zerg/Toss hybrid, could be evil ressurrected Tassadar.
What I do personally think, though, is that it's definitely not Mengsk. I have this feeling that like DuckyTheDuck suggested we'll end up bringing Mengsk to the borders of defeat after which we need him against the greater evil. Wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm willing to bet he will die in either HOTS or LOTV, though - I don't think they'll keep bringing him back from the barely alive and leave him there too. He might even end up dying some kind of a hero's death where at the very last moment he sacrifices his life to finish off the greater evil. Kind of Snape-style.
@AtikLYar; interesting point you're making. I would like to agree but think I have to disagree - I can't think of any examples where a good story carried a bad game, while I can think of an example where a good story didn't carry a bad game. Heroes of Might & Magic 4 had some awesome storylines, but pretty much every fan of the franchise has a deep grudge against that game and likes to pretend it never happened - story definitely didn't save that game for the bulk of people, and that's an audience focused on story.

I would say they are doing most of the lorework for Warcraft.. With the current warcraft lore, WoW can end up having 5 or more expansions. I play WOTLK and i guess i am quite satisfied with it. However with SC2, Blizz is pretty slow with the story, considering their decision to chop the game to 3 sections. Liberty was all about Xel'naga artifacts, and saving Kerrigan; all in probably 6-7 missions? (the rest are side quests not relating one bit to Kerrigan).Wc3 had muchhh much more.
As to Mengsk, i do believe he is (He should be). I mean Dark Voice is a dark voice. he could be whispering angry plans to Mengsk; who is completely oblivious that he is being manipulated.
@DuckytheDuck:
lol, if that is the case then hrm.... im crossing fingers trying to hope its not the same story as ME. Well with the story so far, I would say the Dark Voice HAS to be some almighty god or titan dude; otherwise i don't see how someone could cause an apocalyptic event to happen.
HOTS better be more than just a 'bridge' with a big cliffhanger between Liberty and Legacy of the Void.
@AtikLyar: I completely agree. The quality of a story tells how much dedication it got from its developers, just like any other aspect of a game.
@Mozared: That game would be Bioshock 2 for me. It was nothing like Bioshock; no spooks, no horror (counting the fact that you are a Big Daddy this time, where in number 1 u play an average person); just plain hack'slash (they give us a big drill to dig thru the baddies) with graphics that are pretty much the same as its predecessor. The story however; IMO, is win. I survived the whole game and loved the last few stages that finished the loose ends.
but i guess i could be wrong too. Mario games tend to tell how Peach keeps getting kidnapped, and Mario goes to the rescue. But hey, its a hit game everyone knows right? =P

Thoughts?
I think the novels pretty much spoil that the dark voice is either a xel naga or an enemy f the xelnaga bent on thwisting their reproduction cycle.

"failed"
+1 i'd add failed and pissed, out for armageddon ;)
I'm betting on some kind of hybrid monstor. Regardless of story quality, blizzard makes the best PC games there are. Story < Gameplay

Who says we can't have both? And why?
Playing game is about experience, and good story can greatly improve game experience.
But I kind of get the feeling why Metzen did what he did. I'm waiting for expansions just because they'll add extra assets.. how sad is that?
